Does Australia Frustrate You?

Maybe I'm just in s shitty mood or something but Australia's scene really sux!
For me. An under 18 TrancEaddict from Sydney. As far as the club scene goes for me I may as well shoot myself. Elevation Yay. Under 18s f**king RnB rubbish. I want something real. Something awsome, something where everyone else knows what is going on. I talk to so many people my age that like 'dance' music. Then when I say I go to Elevation sometimes they ask me if I do breakdancing there! GRRRRRRR

Also TrancEaddicts. Where is there quality trance? Altitude. Good on you Morro! Someone has finally taken some initiative. I feel even more sorry for you Melbourne people. But Altitude is great news!
But I really get sick of al these funky house, commercial dance fricken things. I mean I still like it but there is only so much house I can take. I get sick of it after about 30 min.

Then also. There are not many opportunities for Australian Trance DJs to get gigs as the main trance things that come here are huge events like GSSS and GK. Basically we're stranded.

Hopefully Trance might expand a bit. Get rid of some crap.
My hatred for the Australian scene could be viewed as a good thing as it makes me appreciate trance more!

Please if you think what I've said is a load of bullshit just send my an abusive PM. Thanks

hmm...in general...nope, australia's pretty awesome compared to the rest of the world

...but yeah i can totally understand Trancey...what u're saying in regards to the scene here (it barely exists )

hheeh...have to agree with the housey shit...does nothing for me, but i'll listen to it...but every bloody club u can poke a stick at is throttling it out

tho, i kinda think that it's also a good thing...not only so we can appreciate trance more, as u say...but also so people who r into it, are into it because they like it!

ie. not because it's the latest fad, or it's the "cool" thing to do, or because all their friends do it...but because it's something we connect with & appreciate the music

hmm...hope that explains what i mean...i'm not too good with words

ya, thanks to altitude!!!
nice work!!!

AGREED. Man i seriously FEAR the day people like trance cause its the next trend. i know im gonna go ape shit and just want to hurt someone if that happens.

Posted by escee on Aug-04-2002 02:06:

If trance did become the next fad, sure we would have some simple songs on video hits (the likes of punk, flight 643, etc) but, this can only be a good thing. Instead of going out and hearing every club play progressive housey stuff which is so popular (at least in perth along with dnb) we would be able to hear trance. Then, a year or so down the track something else would come along and take over, but, some clubs would still play the trance that we love.

Which is better than what we have now.

Posted by stipsy on Aug-04-2002 02:19:

look at 1999 and how it nearly destroyed the trance scene overseas...never want that to happen again..trance is very popular at the moment overseas but hopefully it just stays at the level...let the magazines etc praise and destroy other genres...

in terms of australia..we have it good here...i dont know about sydney but melbournes scene is much healthier than all of europe except for proably holland and greece...dont feel sorry for us bout the trance! our trance night is coming

p.s your 17...you should be going to the big events already! dont know how strict they are over there but here they arent strict at all

i'm gonna have to disagree with you there because i'd hate the day when i'm walking down the street and hear a couple of little teeney boppers chatting as to how 'cool' trance is ....lol....i just feel that we TA's are the social elite...we have seen the light,so to speak and those who dont know how good trance is are mising out....we have discovered how good this stuff really is!! so lets not currupt such a good thing by making it mainstream or'cool', as when we do we'll have every loser turning up to, say another Two Tribes, GC,GK event because they want to be 'cool. I'm sure that nobody wants that because it'll wreck it for those who go to these events because they love the music.Anyway i dont think trance was ever meant to be mainstream .
But hey this is simply my opinion and you guys or girls could totally disagree with me. But do we realy want losers at our events ? I THINK NOT MY FELLOW TA FRIENDS

Posted by webmeister on Aug-04-2002 03:29:

I agree that the under 18s events suck, but I'm afraid that's life...under 18s places played cheesy commercial shite when I was 16-17, probably played it when everybody else on this board was that age, and they'll probably still be playing the same type of stuff in 30 years time.

But that's just a perception thing. It's a natural association: under 18 = teenybopper. Probably not true in a lot of cases, but very true in most others. And promoters see it the same way too. It's all about catering for a market. If you got all the nightclubbing inclined, trance-loving under 18's in Sydney together, you'd probably find there aren't a lot of you.

Dance music tends to be music that you only find as you get older. In my case, I didn't really discover good dance music until I was 18 when I was still into grunge metal. I was dragged down Oxford St a few times to places like NV and DCM, realised the music wasn't half as bad as I thought it was, flipped on Wild FM the next day, and my education had begun. Note that that was in the days before Wild started playing cheesy commercial crap purely to appeal to the under 18's.

So you just happen to be a rare breed, someone lucky enough to have seen and heard good music before your time .. your time will come, young grasshopper

But in terms of over 18s events, I don't think it's as bad as you say. Sure most places do play funk/rnb/house shite, but there are the exceptions. Icebox on Thursdays is apparently pretty good (never been tho ), Sublime Fridays will usually play hard trance, Gas on Saturdays also has pretty good music.

Agreed, three clubs isn't much, it would be good to see more, but I don't know if there is enough new trance being produced both here and overseas to satisfy demand. You don't want to be hearing the same tracks over and over again (like Tiesto's sets this year )

So yeah, chin up mate. Sorry for the post length

Posted by Tak on Aug-04-2002 04:37:

Personally I think trance belongs in the underground, that is it isn't mainstream. But we still don't have enough of it going around. 3 clubs Webby, [sarcasm] yaaaay [/sarcasm].

We can't have it all, so be happy with what you've got, 'coz let's face it, it's fantastic!

Posted by stamper on Aug-04-2002 04:47:

Yeah it frustrates me,well it does here in Adelaide anyway. Some people are t00 aragant when it comes to accepting the trance music scene.

Posted by DynaFire on Aug-04-2002 07:42:

Does no one here love a lot of other types of music as well? i'm happy if the club i'm at is playing good music, be it trance, house, dnb, techno, dub even! It all has it's good points. The psy trance scene in melbourne is really good! Try going out to freebase on a sunday night or glow bar, or filter on wednesday for great music and fantastic atmosphere in ton's of styles, or laundry on a monday, hi-fi on wednesday, try some of these, damn fine music to be had.

Happyness to all.

Yeh definately! I want trance to get a bit more popular but not to the funk/house scene popular at the moment. It's a really fine line between fucking up the scene and making it rock.

I'm only 16 plus i don't look 18 at all so I'm shitted. I've never tryed to get into a big event as i don't wanna book tickets for somtthing like GCSSS then they tell me to bugger off at the gate. Plus do I just go up like normal. Wont they ask me for ID? I don't particularly want to pay $75 bucks for a fakey.

Yeh they don't just churn out trance at a million miles an hour like other genres. Makes it more special.
BTW do and DJs here ever play anthem sets? Like just full on Anthems to relive the best trance songs! Geez that would be a great night!

Yeh thats what I hate! When someone asks you "what music you like?". You say Trance proudly and they go "pfft" as if to say thats shit. That's what really annoys me!

Anyways Cheers All

Trancey Ash if the scene did get fucked up it would level out eventually.

Posted by Pointy on Aug-04-2002 11:32:

Trancey Ash, screw paying $75 :P, i've just heard of another brilliant, cheaper way to get an ID. Any decent school in Australia should allow you to get a International Student ID. These ID's are accepted globally and are sponsered by STA Travel and various other companies. People tried using pencils to fill out their form, the idea was to put in your real birthdate, then after getting it stamped by your school, to then go and rub out that birthdate and put in a fake one School's were quick to pick up on this, and now only allow pens.

Have a look around the stores and find on the new pens which you can rub out the ink. Use this to fill out the form, get it stamped, rub out ink and change birthdate and voila! You have an accepted ID.

Depends if you can be fucked/are desperate for an ID, but i'm looking around for one of these pens at the moment

BTW, to save the hassle of being bagged about trance/progressive.. if anybody asks what i'm listening to/what i like, i just say "a bit of everything".. keeps it simple..and who are you trying to satisfy? As long as you love and enjoy the music, who gives a fuck about what other people think, i guess you can just feel good knowing that they're missing out on something big

Ciao

Posted by Hybrid Junkie on Aug-04-2002 12:18:

hey ash I know how you feel, I used to be the same until a friend of mine gave me his P's about a year ago (he's got his full license now).
I haven't been turned down with it once.

Underage is ALL shit, you won't like anything.
I don't know what it's like for Sydney but here's a couple of notes on ID's.

1. The international student card is a good idea, I know a friend who did that and that'd probably be fine for pubs and shit but most clubs (if they're asking for ID to everyone, it depends) will only accept keypass, dirvers license etc. Only real good ones..

soo... 2. try getting a friend's ID who looks like you cos basically if the ID looks real that's what's important, if the ID is real but you look a bit diff. from the photo they either don't notice or you can talk through "yeah man the foto's like 2 years old, how fucken funny do I look" etc.

or 3. find a friend, ask them to lend you their birth certificate, bank statement, old school card (without foto) whatever, go to keypass (or other valid foto ID) and get one with YOUR photo. What could be simpler!!!

nb. for big events, once you've already bought a ticket they don't really notice toooo much at the gates like stips said. I saw oakenfold, chicane and ferry when I was 15 and they didn't notice...

good luck man, I know how you feel

Posted by matt_a on Aug-04-2002 12:25:

Hey Junkie
Thanks for the tips they sound great!
But what is keypass? You say go to key pass but what exactly is it? I think I might be able to get one of my cousins IDs maybe their Ps or something. I hope so. Anyway thanks man you made it sound a hell of a lot simpler!

Posted by narcism on Aug-04-2002 12:39:

I'll tell u wats worse then having no id

is having a real drivers license n the fucked up security not believeing its u coz (even tho its all above board)...

1.Security looks up and down n says..... u look 12 that cant b u and

2. that pic is only 6 months old, u cant have changed that much...

Its so bad coz i had a fake id since i was 16 and i never had a problem with it and now that my id is legitament they quiestion it

PPFFF thats my beef neways

Posted by Ves on Aug-04-2002 14:13:

I'm fucking frustrated! And not because of the dominance of house in Australia, but mainly because I'm only 16....sigh* However, I do like these posts about IDs and things. They're very informative. But I do look fairly young...nonetheless I'll try borrowing an ID from a relative so I can see all these brilliant internationals that are coming.

The association that under 18s are teenys is rather depressing. It's a harsh generalisation. I started listening to dance when I was around 13, and trance is my 'first love' regarding music... but I suppose the under 18 stereotype had to come from somewhere.

I guess I'm lucky because I don't get bagged out as much as I would in other places for liking trance or progressive, seeing not many people know what it is 'round these parts. If I told someone who lived in this backwater mecca for lost hippies that I liked trance, the reply would most likely be "...eh?".

I would definitely like to see trance grow. But yes, not so much that it becomes a trendy 'cool' thing that people only like so they can fit in with the crowd and mask their insecurities. I guess you have to find a balance where everyone is happy...

Ahhh, that's enough from me. This has distracted me from my assessments...

Posted by escee on Aug-05-2002 03:32:

Here is a way to get an id, but, its illegal, and by illegal, i mean very illegal. But, you get a drivers license which wont be disputed by anyone.

You need someone who has gotten their drivers license and your their friend, and they trust you. You get them to give your birth certificate and a few other forms of id (bank card/credit card if they have one is a good one) and then copy their signature so you can do it cold. Walk in to the the nearest licensing department, pretned you are your friend, and say that you lost your license.

They will then ask for your id, take your picture, and then off you go you get your id within a week or so. You might have to pay some money to get a replacement license though.

Posted by Xavier on Aug-05-2002 06:53:

I know some asian people at school who are connected to these people who make fake drivers licenses. Some can be real bodgy and some look like the real thing.

Posted by dj_nomiz on Aug-05-2002 09:26:

so many people have no idea about what trance actually is... my friends think jamiroquai is a kind of funk-trance genre... i gotta say, jamiroquai is gay and itz more dance! but i hope that trance will still stay 'underground' for awhile yet, coz if it goes mainstream... teeny boppers will just swarm it and totally change it!!- i hate pop songs, all u need is a chik whoz hot and a average voice and soon she'll be swarmed by teeny boppers, (althou theres the ocasional talent like dido... i think she has an amazing voice!) newayz back to the point... i also want trance to become more popular coz some underground dj'z really deserve to make more money from the efforts they put into their sets... much more than fukn britney spears who only needs to pose to get as much salary as a club dj getz in a year but all in all i rekon trance is just fine right now, we should keep it to ourselves and only share it to those who really appreciate trance and not becoz trance is cool or nething, i totally agree with nelsonca, i just hope oneday trance will not become mainstream bullshit that teeny boppers flock to i dont think there ever will be a balance if trance was to go mainstream though... *sigh keep it underground for as long as we possibly can!!!!!

I have one of these IS cards from STA, I just forged the principale's
sig and asked the the libary for the school stamp. Walked up to the front of metro's for TwoTribes, whipped it out and got told to "fuck off, we don't accept those". I managed to sweet talk my way in (the Bday on the card was the last week) but I'm not game to try again. It works for any pub or bottle'O but. I know a guy who does passports, but they are also dodgey.

What are Keycards anyway? that sounds really easy.

Grrrrr....8 months to go yill I'm 18, and october is before that!

Posted by Itchy on Aug-05-2002 10:28:

yeah by law the only acceptable forms of ID are current drivers license, proof of age card or passport if you are a foreigner.....

i used a scratched lisence for ages and it worked all the time, right up until i didn't need it any more....never had a problem. I got a firend to do it....all you need to do is carefully scratch of the last number in the date and replace it first with pencil and and then a felt tip pen over it.....but you do need it alot of practice to make it look perfect......hence why i got my friend to do it.........

anyways just a thought that might help you out
