Unhappy South Korea residents ordered to "take cover"

LINK

(CNN) -- South Korea ordered residents of Yeonpyeong Island and four border islands to take shelter Monday as it prepared to start military exercises that have raised fears of a new conflict with North Korea.

In addition to Yeonpyeong, residents on Vaengnyeong, Daecheong, Socheong and Udo were ordered to take cover.

Typical protocol is for the drills to begin two hours after the notification of residents, though the country's military declined to confirm the exact timing of the scheduled exercises.

North Korea said over the weekend that the planned exercises were designed to violate the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 and "ignite war at any cost." At the United Nations, nearly eight hours of emergency Security Council talks on the standoff ended Sunday without a unified statement on the issue, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters.

Russia called for the emergency session over the weekend to defuse the crisis over South Korea's scheduled live-fire military exercises off Yeonpyeong Island, which was shelled by North Korea in November. Churkin warned darkly that the world could be faced with a "serious conflict" within hours, and that the international community has "no game plan on the diplomatic side."

"Within hours there may be a serious aggravation of tension -- a serious conflict, for that matter," he said.

Did you gather this intel from the UK forum you've been posting in all day?

And I ,for one, welcome our new Korean overlords.

It's times like this that I can only pray that when the nukes do fall, I will be those lucky enough to get hit near the epicenter. Instant vaporization doesn't seem too painful. Not like those unfortunate to live near the blast, who will die painful deaths from all the radiation days after.

Hopefully no major nukes will hit around Norway.

I could definately do that whole Fallout thing.

In future NEWS N.K. has deployed suit case nuclear weapons and some have made it through to South Korea.

Oh wait civilians don't have that memo yet, but a friend of mine who was in Iraq back in 2003 after he came back kept telling me N.K. had suit case nuclear weapons that they were trying to get into S.K. That was years ago.

War there in my opinion is inevitable, and if given enough time ransoms will be made. Given the American notions that they will not negotiate with terrorists things are not looking good.

Hope Zewad stays safe and is ready to kick some ass if not. This will be his kind of fight if shit hits the fan.

Must be disturbingly exciting to put into practice a lot of the things he's trained for, but didn't have a chance to come up against in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Good luck man!

You know I was just thinking, if North and South Korea start war with each other, would this be considered WW3? I mean think about it. We're already in war with Afghanistan and Iraq, and if North Korea attacks, we'll be at war with them too. How many countries would have to get involved for it to be considered a World War? 5 seems like it would do the job (Afghanistan, Iraq, USA, South Korea and North Korea)

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Dec-20-2010 05:21:

A lot of people call the War on Terror WWIII. I really don't like that name though.

On the other hand I think that to really call something a world war you have to have unified sides or at least allied sides.

Afghanistan, Iraq, and North Korea are not really allies, at least not in name like there was during WWI and WWII.

This is more like "the US & friends against a few nuisances", it doesn't really count. In WWI and WWII you had a bunch of big players teaming up and fighting one another. Like teen girls divided between team glitter and team gayer.

war on terror is more like the cold war hey, not really all-out, mostly ideological etc..

I can see this escalating is China continues to back the North... could turn into WW3 relatively easily imo...

hopefully China has changed enough thru their capitalist ways to leave their freaky cousin commies in the woods while the US and south fuck em up... otherwise shit is going to get serious

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Dec-20-2010 06:46:

What is going to suck is when those North Koreans come streaming across the Chinese border they are going to be met with gun fire.

Wikileaks put out a cable last week from somewhere, that said "China will accept a combined Korea, under the control of Seoul".

(Not a direct quote, I can't be fucked looking for it just now).

Edit: A brief run-down:

ahh k, I wasn't sure where the issue ended: I Know China's been changing their stance pretty significantly over the last year or 2, since NKs been launching those weapons and generally being retarded...

I wouldn't expect China to risk their position in the world over NK, but you never really know how these types of things will play out...

China also could well win a world war, so could get interesting if they used this as an opportunity to take down the US or something...

You've gotta wonder what China's longterm political plans are anyway... They'll definitely supersede the US in 50 years or something once the US finally falls apart cause of debt etc, but hopefully it just happens peacefully...

EDIT: read the article: Thank ye godz,

p.s: NK is FUCKED. lololol
