the beat or the melody?

I have to go with the beat.

Posted by eckmek on Dec-23-2010 18:24:

Beat for sure. Melody is so overrated.

does bassline count as beat?

i'll go with the BEAT....

but i like the melody too

Posted by djnitride on Dec-23-2010 21:50:

The beat, thought it depends on the genre.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Dec-23-2010 22:11:

most times the beat but on some genres like ambient , melodic trance or happy hardcore probably the hook is the melody.

Posted by pozz on Dec-23-2010 22:21:

sometimes ambient music aint got no melody

+1
Beat is dominant in a song for me, if the melody kicks ass and can change how you feel the beat then its awesome!

Posted by miamitranceman on Dec-24-2010 04:11:

Most definitely the melody, which is sorely lacking these days IMO.

Posted by Light The Fuse on Dec-24-2010 04:23:

the groove

White noise is overused now days, and the supersaw hooks are too loud, almost drowning out the percussion (damn loudness war).

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Dec-24-2010 08:08:

Anyone who separates a piece of music into "the beat" and "the melody" and then picks one is an utter fucking idiot.

Posted by Voci on Dec-24-2010 08:41:

Donk.

Posted by Trance-M on Dec-24-2010 11:53:

Now I'm confused

Posted by KilldaDJ on Dec-24-2010 11:57:

so to those who selected the beat over the melody, you would rather listen to somebody playing drums for an hour? rather than someone playing piano with no drums?

well no matter how good the beat is, i'll get bored.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Dec-24-2010 13:30:

techno is the kind of music you can't listen for hours without drinking/taking drugs the beat is what you look for when you go clubbing but a lonely beat hour after hour is so boring.

It would be interesting to see a percussion set by someone like Safri Duo , i don't know if after 30 minutes i'd leave but they used trance arrangements in their albums so i think they understood that percussion must rely on melody even though it is variated.

Posted by Barachem on Dec-24-2010 14:22:

The melody, melodic soundcapes are the core of trance.
The beat is nearly as important, but indeed, just rhythms makes for a boring music experience.
