A short progressive idea (subtitle - how can I sound moar liek Deadmau5)

Shoot me some ideas. I'm not sure where i'm going with this yet as the idea of percussion is a little alien to me.

I like the sound of it so far so I don't want to let it languish though.

very mau5/kaskade-ish sound here

love the clap and the plucks, personnally I think its missing a little bit of Pump

maybe more sidechain on the plucks?

Posted by Illumin on Jan-07-2011 04:59:

agree with ^^

sounds really nice though....mixdown and dynamics are great....definitely some more pump, and some noise fx to play with the pumping

love the chill melody! looking forward to hearing the rest

Posted by tehlord on Jan-07-2011 11:08:

thankyou brothers

I think you may be right about teh pump

I'll fix that in teh next edit

Oh, and I have to confess that clap was ripped right out of a VEH loop of some description, with a little plate on it to draw it out a bit.

Really enjoyable chords. The sound is also very nice indeed, with great dynamics as ever.

I know why people say get them pumping more but on the other hand that pumped sound has been done a billion times, so maybe don't get them to pump any more in fact.

I have an immense female singer who could be up for this, and trust me she is totaly unique and outstanding.

I don't think it needs much moe in terms of percs - just some carefuly done tom / conga work with your own unique fx touches to them so they aren't generic.

I'll keep an eye on this.

Cheers Rich

I think teh misses will be doing the vocals on this once I sort a melody out for them, but thanks for the offer!

I seem to have a total mental block for house percussion. I know it's fairly straightforward but I think i've been stuck on the tarnce 16ths too long

I'll have to see how the vocals sit before I fiddle with the pumping any more. I may even just increase the ratio on the ducking compressor as the filters open up. That might work.

Posted by Illumin on Jan-07-2011 16:39:

maybe not so much overall pumping effect, buy maybe a creeping / pumping reverb effect!

anyway...good stuff!

Posted by Owsey on Jan-07-2011 17:57:

Cool, Geffers. It surely does accomodate that Deadmau5 vibe nicely.

Personally, I'm not sure what I'd do. Let's just see how the vocals turn out. Make them massif, bruv

You can see right through me G. and you now perfectly what I'm thinking about this track lol - please see SC for my view on this (last year style lol) production.

Cheers,

Darek

Cheers fellas

I'vejust wasted a whole afternoon with several channels of scrapped percussion.

Now you know what I'm going through almost every day lol.

Cheer G.

TOo short

to listen in the meanwhile upload a 4 min loop of this, would be nice.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Jan-08-2011 01:17:

This is very nice so far.

In terms of making this more like deadmaus, it needs a proper groove, at the moment it has more proggy influences whilst good in their own right, not quite his sound.

Not enough emphasis on a catchy bass at the moment so at the moment sounds more like very slow trance. The riff is catchy and I like it, but the bass needs a character and a voice of its own to set the track on fire. With tracks that are this sort of tempo bass lines play a much more melodic role.

In order to open that space for the bass I might be tempted to play with the rhythm of the pluck and create a question and answer type scenario.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Cheers
Nem

Sounds good Maybe some leads?

Posted by tehlord on Jan-08-2011 02:22:

Thanks again guys. Sorry it's so short but it really just was a chord progression idea at the moment

@ Nem

Thanks for that great feedback. I'm actually not trying to achieve a Deadmau5 sound per se, although the track is obviously influenced by that style.

I'm not sure where i'm going with the bass at this point. There is a heavy sub bass layer to the pluck already, playing along the same pattern, although your suggestion has got me thinking about chopping it round a bit. More messing required I think.

Cheers

Make it longer, add vocals, profit!

I agree with many of the comments here IF this was going to be an instrumental, but I sorta like the more straightforward feel as a background for some luscious female vox. Personally, I'd get the melody and vox down, then see if/how the groove could be changed to augment it, but that's not to say that it is the "right" way to approach it.

Either way, I dig it dude!

That's pretty much the road i'm going down

Me rikey! Rikey a rot!

Good job, definitely caught the 8th note essence.

The thing with these tracks is the simplicity of the perc, and the lick/clap is perfect. If you need to give it more drive (maybe not really necessary), then keep it to simple, well placed hi perc. These type of tracks just lose their feel when they get busy.

Try a simple elongated "shhhh" (like a brief ascending cymbal) on the offbeat and try moving a few ticks for syncopation with the other sounds, especially how it fits with the bass.

If you get the vox right, could be a real corker.....

Cheers big ears!

I honestly find the less is more approach to percussion much tricker than 10 layers of tarnce

But I agree that in this case more would ruin the feel.

thanks for listening

Like it A LOT, would need a bit more balls / ooomph but all elements seem to be there

Posted by MSZ on Jan-09-2011 17:43:

sounds good ofcourse like everything youve been doing for a while. looking forward to hearing it in context.

Agree with this one. At this moment it's a nice piece of work but missing some attitude.

I think that is what I was trying to say on my previous post.

EDIT - new remix version by Dirtbox Divas in post further down. Didn't want to stomp all over your thread matrte so removed it from this post.

Posted by tehlord on Jan-09-2011 19:35:

thanks again chaps!

I do like what the dirty duo are doig and to be honest you really should just do what you feel is right. your last track was spiffing after all!

This is the latest idea render (not gonna bother updating the SC render all the time)

http://www.mediafire.com/?xc099tpkg423ewl

The horrible synth at the start is just the vocal melody so it's represented in the mix and i've pulled out the filter automation to more or less work by itself to leave room for the vocals. Remember that it only describes note value, not how it'll be sung or sound in the mix.

I'm still scratching my head over the pissing percussion though
