The main thing I found odd is:
quote:
A Canadian woman alleges that Mexican police gang-raped her in jail after she and her fianc were arrested while on vacation in Mexico for New Year's Eve
quote:
Eighteen hours passed before the two were released from jail after paying a 1,600-peso, or $130 Cdn, fine, they say.

Rebecca Rutland went to the Canadian consular agency in Playa del Carmen on Jan. 12 to report the sexual assault.

those cops have absolutely no taste.
The police in Mexico are so openly corrupt it's disgusting. Locals have no respect for them and never count on them for help.
When we were at BPM we got stopped at a checkpoint. The driver I was with was obviously under the influence. Cops threatened to book us so instead we just gave them 1,000 pesos and drove off. Luckily we were with locals who talked to the cops and we got away with it. If it was just me or some tourists we would've been more screwed and shaken down big time.
Poor Mexico keeps getting bad publicity with Canada.
I think more investigation is required here. Apparently the rape kit test was negative, which definitely does not support their allegations.
It's unfortunate that the media has already decided that the Mexicans are guilty, hence the way they've presented the story.

Originally posted by geroin possibly but that's the conclusion i came to when i finished reading the article, rape kit - negative, bite marks - don't look like bite marks at all, both were extremely drunk (how does she remember in such detail?), her husband getting into an altercation with mexican police (it's known not to mess with them) and her absolute lack of resistance during the alleged rape (anyone in danger would at least scream or fight back). Either provocation or just extremely pissed for being arrested on new years.

RAPE IN MEXICO????
O WOW what a SHOCKING NEWS!
whenever stories like this come up in the news i always wonder what they are diverting attention from here in canada. Because to cover BS like this takes away time slots on the local news as well as headline space in newspapers.

Originally posted by Adam420 Yea but people don't intentionally land up in countries like Yemen and Somalia. Mexico is a major tourist destination and the government should be doing a lot more to ensure the safety of those who visit. And that doesn't mean that it should just be agreed that tourists shouldn't leave their resort area. What does that say about the country itself? IMO people should just not be going there. Imagine if tourism numbers drop dramatically? The government will have to tighten the belt on crime and corruption. As long as they continue to make money, why would they do otherwise?

You have to remember that you are not in Canada when you are visiting another country, you have to respect that countries laws, ethics, traditions etc. Being a Canadian does not give you a right to fuck shit up wherever you go, if you want to act like a dick you can stay in a resort and do so, but not outside in a city. |
