Canadian Federal Elections 2011 - Official Thread

I know there is a political thread already, but our government (not guvernment - so take it easy ) just felt apart! My emotions are running high! Is there anything that's dear to your heart? Anything that you are looking for as a dance community? Legalizing soft drugs? I say about time! Dropping GST on glow sticks? Hell yah!!!!! Let this be the official thread!!!

I don't think it should necessarily be entirely cancelled... but there's no way that we needed to be in balls-deep for 65 jets at once. The F35 program is in developmental chaos, other countries are waiting before committing to purchases.

I like the ideology of Ford in Toronto. Get back to basics, remove stupid taxes, get expenses in order, making tough decisions where needed. Basically running the city like a company instead of feeling entitled to spend like taxpayers have bottomless pockets


I hate ontario's gov. being too controlling and generally fucking the province over.


im not too keen on the NDP's side of things where all our money should be spent for social programs...heads towards a heavier gov. with more and more responsibilities.



To my knowledge, Ford === The right.....which is the Cons? But the cons are spending recklessly right now...

Liberals is middle? but i cant see myself voting liberal based on what i see with ontario's gov and McGuinty....


and NDP....cant vote for them.....

The parties haven't came out with their positions yet, cause none of them had a plan in the fist place :]

Regardless of how this election turns out, its a sure fire sign that our electoral system needs an overhaul big time and it needs to happen ASAP.

Four elections in seven years, 50% voter turnout... its all one huge bureaucratic money suck. More time is spent transitioning legalities between governments then actually getting things done. Regardless of your stance (left or right) the system is dated and inefficient.

The main sales pitch of this election should be the money being wasted on elections. Ironic.

Each election costs us 250-300million dollars. Over a billion dollars have been spent for nothing in return.

I can only hope that this induces some frustration, and citizens come out to vote.

Whoever wins this election needs a majority. On the topic of money sucking, there is a big WHOOSH sound of money going down the drain with a minority govt. Nothing gets done. If we're going to go to an election this often, let it be because a majority government actually did something instead of just, wanted to do something. If that make any sense.

That poll has got to be the most work-intensive poll I've ever voted on.

Why not just make a regular-ass TA poll?

i think the main problem about the last 3-4 elections is that there has not been any party leader that is inspirational/motivational/transformational/leader

none of the parties has a leader that is likeable enough to make people want to get off their asses and go vote.

It will never happen. Layton winning is probably the worst thing that could happen. IF he did, he would actually have to do some of the shit he says. Dude if the budget had've been perfect, they STILL would've called for an election...

They want their shot at power and will do anything to get it...

VDub, as I posted in the other thread, Harper tanked the budget in order to get it defeated - he was trying to avoid the contempt of parliament charge which failed when Ignatieff embedded it into the confidence motion.

One thing that I do like about this never ending cycle of minority governments is that it has almost completely shut up the proportional representation crowd. Let's face it, we don't have the political culture in this country for successful coalition governments. Prop Rep speaks about an ideal with no link to reality. Frankly, it's pretty much lockstep with the worldview of its proponents.

Yes, Ignatieff is an arrogant bastard, but Harper is almost as bad if not worse. Only the arrogant think they can make policy decisions without examining the facts provided by their subject matter experts. Harper is guilty of this time and time again (e.g. crime stats don't jive with his "tough on crime" nonsense platform, or the dismissal of census data in almost any other policy area).
