deadmau5 xfer pack has some of the cleanest sounding loops, used in a lot of tracks ive heard

also wave alchemy has some of the greatest kicks IMO very clean and has SUB freq kicks that you can layer..

Xfer is pretty good.

I've received good mileage from the Sample Magic Toolroom Records Library.

The King of Kong Refill for Reason/Record is the history of drum machines in one package, and I believe the samples were provided by Hollow Sun.

Sample Magic & Hy2rogen have some cool stuff. I have Hy2rogen's "The Huge Kick Library" which has like 1,000 kicks or something ridiculous, but only a few of those samples have very good sub bass boom. I use the top ends of his kicks a lot though, and all the other samples are good as well. Deadmau5's Xfer is a key sample pack IMO because it has some of the most awesome claps ever. And of course +1 to Waves Alchemy

I don't think there is a sample pack with really good kicks straight out of the box.

A trick I learned that works some of the time is adding a sinewave for sub bass and adjusting the ASDR envelope

Sound Of Revolution has nice stuff.

Eh, what the fuck is going here. Beatflux and Kasmira both have the same Avatar.

please stop that. Makes it very confusing.

Posted by arskinetica on Apr-06-2011 18:18:

Maybe they suffer from Multiple Avatar Disorder

Posted by Kasmira on Apr-06-2011 19:32:

What in the hell? I made that a while ago and have used it for my soundcloud avatar for months!

Agreed, but literally, most of them have very small amounts of sub at all, other than like 10 out of the 1,000. And why you stealin' avatars? :P

Is there any leeway in US copyright law for sampling?

I know there is some for written music, since you can only do so much with the western music tradition, especially with EDM since it's well, EDM.

Things can end up sounding similar due to the unconscious influence of material the composer/producer has listened to or admires, and there are limits to what people can do without going insane or using bizarre tuning systems.

no is the simple answer, when it comes to melodies, especially whe it comes to sampling, as you're just copying the audio, both in terms of the recording, and the melody.

drums, basslines (most, not all) and perc sounds are not subject to copyright so you can lift them and use them.

Melodies can be similar but not the same and I believe musicologists use a 5 note repetition as their minimum standard for an original work.

There have been cases where basslines can be subject copyright infringement, such as the "dub be good to me" bassline which got beats international sued by the Clash, as the bassline was said to contain a distinct melodic content, and no other previous providence could be established so the clash won the majority of the publishing.

Posted by arskinetica on Apr-06-2011 21:42:

It's definitely possible, even if you do nothing to get sued.

Thanks for clarifying.
