DubStep

Sigh... I might be opening a can of worms here.... but what the hell....

In my recent exploration of electronic music, I've come upon "Dubstep". What do you guys think about it? It's pretty hit or miss with me. I love love LOVE some of it and then hate some of it. I guess the same can be said with any genre.

The few artists I've checked out so far are:

Skrillex (I have a major lady boner for his music right now, and he is the only one that has a consistency of good songs)
Rusko (His Pro Nails -Kid Sister remix is awesome)
Datsik
Excision
Deadmau5
... and a couple others I cant think of at the moment.

Does anyone else have any suggestions of artists or songs to check out?

BTW Dubstep is garbage and a step in the wrong direction. Its not even Electronica in my mind...

dubstep is miss or miss for me




addendum - this isn't quite true. i love the very drummy, understated, spacey, deep stuff like the now defunct label 'skull disco', some pangea, and some martyn, and some of the darker atmospheric witchy and soulful stuff like burial.






however, real dub on the other hand.... some of my favorite music.

Probably the next "trance". It's blown up hugely here in the US, and most of it is just cookie-cutter wobble shite at this point. Kids love taking molly and getting lost in the BASS though.

Burial and most everything Hyperdub related. Other then that.....no.

Like many genres there is some really good stuff and then a whole bunch of shit that is extremely popular.

I used to laugh and make fun of dubstep, the name dubstep sounds dumb, then, I came across Skrillex, I think Adam Beyer mentioned Skrillex once as he was talking about a gig he did in Liverpool on his Drumcode radio show.

Any retard who says that Skrillex is not electronic music deserves to be hung, the kid is very talented, he came up with his own sound, songs like Kill Everybody and Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites are masterpieces.

I was thinking about seeing Skrillex in Helsinki, at Circus July 29th but mothafucka is sold out!

There is some that I like, but way more that I don't.

The good stuff is pretty good though, albeit just sounding like stuff in the 90s that I would have just called "electronica".

I've been wanting to do a full mix of dubstep/minimal drum 'n bass for a while now. The problem I have with this genre as a DJ is that it's very difficult to build up momentum. Even at dubstep parties, the energy levels tend to remain constant. Thus far I've only used dubstep when mixing it up with other genres, for this reason.

Dubstep is totally lame.

Got my fair share of dubstep in '06-'07 while studying in Guildford, when it had just started its ascent into the mainstream. DMZ's second birthday bash at Mass in Brixton and the few times I got to be at FWD were particular highlights. It's fascinating to look at this thread in retrospect now, and how little time it took for the sound to blow up from there.

Two years later or so, after Benga & Coki - Night had propelled dubstep fully into the limelight (a tune I always hated, even when it was getting battered on dubplate at parties I went to) it had more or less completely solidified its formula and position in the mainstream, and thus stopped being all that interesting. Unsurprisingly, the people I rated the most within the genre seemed to think the same, as almost all of them escaped to the fringes of the London-spectrum, towards house, techno, funky, just plain leftfield or some combination of them. Guys like Pangaea, Scuba, Ramadanman, Appleblim, Headhunter, Pinch and Kode9 have developed into something quite different from the dubstep core they all grew up in, which actually is more in the spirit of dubstep (subbass + space + whatever you feel like) than the formulaic halfstep/midrange chainsaw LFO-nonsense that passes for dubstep now.

I do enjoy some Hyperdub and Echodub stuff.

I have some friends who are more into brostep tho. Last party one of them had, I was subjected to a brostep "remix" of the Legend of Zelda Overworld theme.

Some of the Bassnectar stuff is pretty cool. Skrillex has a few as well.

Interestingly enough, Pretty Lights is experimenting with brostep, and this one is interesting:

WTF?

I find the name dubstep kind of misleading, because to me, dubstep is dub house with a breakbeat drum patterns rather than a 4/4 drum patterns.

I call this kind of music lfostep and I kind of dig it if I'm not expecting something else. But like System-J said, you can't make a good set out of dubstep tracks solely, since its structure reminds more of heavy metal than of disco.

Also, why does everyone keep calling lfostep dirty and filthy? It's in fact it's one of the cleanest and most sterile kinds of music out there due to its lack of muddy frequencies.
