cottages,,,

fuck I want one.

let this thread continue as a "large realistic purchases you want to make in the near future" thread.

i rented one for 4 days in august...as far as owning one, fuck that. Too expensive, and too much upkeep for a second preoperty. One house is hands full enough imo.

my grandparents had the best cottage... it was on the lake in oak bay-georgian bay. i spent all my summers there with my cousins growning up. when my grandmas dementia started getting bad my grandparents had to sell. They're gone now... my aunts have bought cottages at burnt river near haliburton but i haven't been there yet.

a solitary cottage by a river, in the middle of a forest somewhere in england would be bliss for me

i love having a cottage. Sitting on your own little beach drinking beer is heaven.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jul-18-2011 12:30:

Yeah cottage life is the best. Wish we still had ours. Would have been nice to have it in the family and keep passing it down.

But yeah, summers on the lake ftw.

You can buy a nice house on the beach in the Bahamas for the price of a small cottage in Muskoka.

Awesome. That means myself and the rest of the TA BPM crew can use it in January, thanks!

Meh. Cottaging is all about the Muskoka experience and simple pleasures though. Boating, canoeing, camping, hiking, water sports, drinking on a dock, bbqing, enjoying the beauty that is Northern-ish Ontario/getting back to nature, learning about the local history, etc. And most importantly, it's about bonding with friends and family. Cottaging is awesome because of all the friends you make that you go back year after year to see, and the memories you make with your family.

Yeah, having a home in the Bahamas would also be awesome, but it's a totally different experience than cottaging. I'm sure many people would consider it a better experience, but I would take a cottage over that any day.

I was wondering what all of you were on about in this thread, but then wikipedia told me that in North America the term "cottage" means holiday home.

Definitely.

this is my grandparents cottage.. it was alot smaller when they purchased it in the 60's. in the early 80's they added a huge addition making it a 2 storey house, which they moved into permanently. There was also a cabin on the property closer to the dock.

i sure do miss that place...

Also, why is it that when referring to glitzy places like Miami, it's always a condo, while in a more plain city it's simply called an apartment? As far as I know, the words are pretty much synonymous.

Posted by Tasty Onions on Jul-18-2011 16:21:

Condos are owned, not rented -- at least that's how the term is used in the U.S.

Posted by Domesticated on Jul-18-2011 16:53:

Right, so condo implies more wealth. Can the word apartment also be used for something you own?

Posted by shaw on Jul-18-2011 16:57:

I'm sitting in one right now.

But do you have the receipt for it?

Nope. Just invoices.
