FFFUUUUUUUUUU east coast quake
It felt big here in NYC. ... heard cracks and stuff in my building. Epicenter was in VA - 5.8 mag.
Anyone in DC who can speak to it?

Already spoken to here:

Apparently they're evacuating the Pentagon. I might walk over there and see if I can see anything, since it's only ten minutes by foot.
I am close to the epicenter, maybe a little closer than DC.
Felt pretty big, my apartment building was clearly shaking. No damage here, though.

I'm about 30 minutes south of Montreal and we felt it. I was actually smoking a joint with my gf and we both turned around at the same time and told each other to stop fidgeting. The house shook enough for a shittily hung painting to fall.

How is that even possible?! Virginia is in the middle of a tectonic plate
Any damage? Or was it a small/deep one? (which would explain everything)
People as far away as Southern Kentucky reported they felt it.
Lira, it was a very deep earthquake, especially for it to travel so far with so much force.
Felt it near Philly here.
Thought my neighbor was doing some shit, but then it continued.
Freaky! First noticeable one I've ever been through, as far as I know.
East coast quakes are less violent than Pacific rim ones but travel further because the bedrock is very solid / well-connected.

| Originally posted by Lira Yeah, I'm gathering some information about it now. So bizarre, I had no idea you guys could have these earthquakes there, but apparently they're not exactly rare. |

| Virginia is classified as a "moderate" seismic risk, and has a 10-20% chance to experience a 4.75 quake every century or so. |
