Trance Lost in Time

Alright let see if this not only me but i've been listening to some old ASOT episodes and holy shit was the music amazinggg. I feel like some of this old stuff can be brought back today cuz it sounds sooo good it really doesn't have that old sound!! and it doesn't necessarily have to be remixed, original sounds just right.

episodes like...

288
264
265
269
254
270
271

i mean i know they are old but holy shit was the music amazing!! i can't seem to attach to any new stuff going around now a days.

yea same here i stopped listening to ASOT for 2 years now. Just isn't the same as before. Thats why i just go back to the older episodes, they have solid sets. I gotta get like 100-200 any where good to download, like in a bundle???

currently listening to ASOT 182 (yearmix) amazinggggg!!!!!!

Posted by martinezequiel on Nov-12-2011 18:39:

it really sux tho, you can really hear the quality of these sets back than now its all shit.

i wonder when this cycle of good music will be back around.

I have all of them up to 250. After that I said fuck it. The best stuff is definitely below 200

ASOT is still not TERRIBLE, but it's nowhere near the better podcasts these days.

The ASOT parties are usually great, though.

I think it's episode 24 that has a live recording from Paul van Dyk - Ministry at Knebworth 2001. Phenomenal set IMO.

It's funny because you mentioned "old sound". I feel like trance from 200-2004 was so far ahead of its time. The stuff getting big now is what's old sounding. The Avicii and SHM sound all the guys are using sounds like big-room Jersey fistpump house from the 90s. And a lot of the big trance tunes have dumbed down to dumb Eurotrance tunes from back in the day. Just a musical observation, but I think those days from the early 2000s, shit was so ahead of its time; producers are currently scaling back, skill-wise. The obvious Ableton preset effects are being used, but not really the sound design and more difficult things that were once done..

I always thought Hybrid was way ahead of their time back in the early 2000's. Hell they even had a full orchestra perform Wide Angle for a radio special one time

i see what you mean about eurodance etc
alot of producers are blending too many styles into it
but when the melody comes in thats the main focus...very loud and high above everything else...the emotion factor is pretty much gone

these days finding quality trance tunes is a lil bit harder
cant really focus on the big guys they are too busy playing the eurodance,mash-ups,vocals,pop etc etc

I agree.

I guess music is still same we are just getting old!
We are not open any thing new. Still want to hear old type of music but in EDM there is always change.

Yes! This is what I was trying to communicate. Some of the "old sound" is really the present sound or can still be used now. I just miss that really deep melodic sound.

Even some of the sounds Tiesto (and his producers) were coming up with at the time were just so much more involved. You can tell hours were spent on sound design and developing new synths and sounds that were never heard before. And that was Tiesto, the most famous and most successful DJ then at the time, it wasn't an underground guy. That was a case of the most popular guy in the scene also being one of the guys innovating it the most (in my opinion). Just listen to Tiesto's remix of "Southern Sun" again and I don't think a producer would be able to recreate some of the sounds used in there.

Now, it's the opposite. It's not even a matter of taste or personal preferences in music. Any seasoned producer will tell you the complete lack of effort that marks this era (the last 3-5 years) apart from the one before it. Even the cheesiest songs from 2000-2005 era had more attention to detail than the ones now, from a production perspective. [/rant]

I wonder is anyone out there in this forum still follows ASOT episodes as used to do in 2002-2006? Im not!

+1.

i also have noticed that remixes of a song tend to suck more then the original version nowadays. I guess each "artist" that is working on remixing a song, thinks not to put something new and different out there. they won't get recognized for it or something. so they end up remixing a weak version of it.

god i missed those time where you could have 3 other awesome mix to a song

oh yeah i guess my two cent of the topic. i never listen more then two of his podcast within a year.. since from the beggining of that. i think it got big on the 50th.. not sure. But yeah never cared for it. He was too fluffy for my taste. i wanted the harder stuff the other djs were playing.

i thought he was weak. How ever my view changed when i saw the video interview he did with tiesto. there he said how he always wanted to rule the radio waves with more of an "emotional" trance sounds. That's when i got a overwhelming feeling of a douche. He is playing what he always wanted. That's why i respect him.

I do since work allows it and I remember to tune in. BUT I don't rush home like I used to to download the episodes and roll it for two days straight.

i think a lot of this issue is caused by the accessibility to music production applications in comparison to 2000-05/06. after that there was a massive influx of 'new' talent being picked up by mid-tier labels that were getting playlisted. after all, more availability = more participants = more content = more digital labels picking up the music. not to say that this is a bad thing - i'm one of the newborn software babies when it comes to trance production lol.

some of the guys in the 2000-05/06 era had already been making music for 10 years and in that time period it was not nearly half as easy to make electronic music as it is now. and now we're seeing artists who have been at it for only a handful of years total.

the good news is, there ARE a lot of artists pushing boundaries as there always will be, and they are seeing support from major artists etc. for instance, the NYTA/east coast army of producers are always putting out unique stuff (eco, breakfast, mike saint jules, zack roth). not to mention a ton across the world in the same category making unique tunes. i think it's ultimately just a matter of everybody keeping it up and eventually I think the quality control of music will eventually come back into play for trance (i actually don't feel this way for other subgenres at the moment).
