Top flick. Brilliant idea, awesome execution.

Posted by TranceSeeker on Sep-02-2002 14:30:

One of the best movies ever made.
Brilliant story and plot.

OK it's time to test my theory...

How to you guys fell about movies like:

Fight Club
The Mexican
The Boondock Saints
Snatch
And other films like that?

Posted by TranceGiant on Sep-02-2002 15:45:

Eh..nah it's still subjective. Why else did I hate the so called masterpiece "American Beauty" ?

Posted by cbxzcm on Sep-02-2002 15:51:

If you like Memento, then I'd like to recommend the movie "Donnie Darko".

Actually, this movie wasn't even released to many theatres, like maybe one in each mid-sized town.

I agree that it's brilliant though, a very original directing idea, I bought the DVD as soon as it came out...the only disappointment being that it's very difficult, if not impossible to program it backwards (so you can watch it in actual linear order) because of the B+W cut scenes which are progressing in normal time while the colour sections all run backwards...I need to get a video copy of it so I can do it by hand...seeing this film forward would just be interesting IMHO.

omg....one of my all time favorite movies. if you haven't seen it, you've gotta watch it. absolutely brilliant. i've seen it quite a few times and i think i've finally figured out everything in it.

on another forum that i regularyly read we had a long discussion about this and i wanna see what you guys think. are leonard and sammy jenkins the same person? ( watch the hospital clip closely ) Did he kill his wife or was she murdered? Teddy...good or bad cop?

Posted by CortexBomb on Sep-02-2002 16:58:

I think the difficult thing about asking questions like that is that in watching the film you're essentially taking the perspective of Leonard. Everying you see is coloured by *his* perspective, thus, you can take a guess that yes, what he thinks is correct, or no, what *that* person said is correct, but you'll never really know because the objective reality doesn't exist; only the subjective one that Leonard is experiencing.

All that said, IMO yes, Leonard was Sammy, and killed his wife. The movie seems to paint the picture that way, so I'd be inclined to think that that's what the author's intent was.

As for Teddy, he was really a shade of grey IMO. He was manipulating Leonard for his own ends, but he also thought he was justified because in his opinion, the people that Leonard was killing were deserving of death, and he additionally could justify it all to himself by thinking that Leonard would eventualy remember, and be able to come to terms with his wife's death.

Teddy wasn't a good guy, but I also think the character was a fairly accurate portrayal of the mindset that a lot of police have as well. He wasn't flat out evil, just very misguided.

Hey, here's a suggestion for you guys; Next time you feel like talking about the plot publicly, DON'T! Or give a fuckin warning.

Posted by DJ Lac on Sep-02-2002 21:42:

BOMBED

Talk about bombing a movie lol

Christ man, sorry to offend, but no need to jump all over us either.

I can understand your point, but on the other hand, if you don't want to read about a movie, then why click a link into a discussion about said flick?

It's been out for ages now...it's one thing to have spoiler warnings on discussions about *brand new* or *not yet released* films, it's another thing entirely when you're dealing with a two year old one IMO.

Its ok mate, if u know the plot or not have to watch it 2-3 times to really understand the movie, its just so amazing.
Now from what u read u will still be blown away after u watched it.
Take my word!

Posted by Trancewave on Sep-02-2002 23:10:

well, i just finished watching the movie and all I have to say is good thing I held off on reading this thread before watching because I would be royally pissed off

just my 0.02

But yeah I have heard reviews before about how this movie rocked! and it did not disapppoint. Definately thrown for a loop. The ending (or beginning rather) was absolutely shocking and I'll definately have to watch it again to get all the details right. IMO Sammy is Leonard, but then why did Teddy say that Sammy was a fraud and his wife didn't exist? was he refering to Leonard? (scratch noggin')
Another question I have is, what was Natalie's motive? I got a little lost there.

Posted by Tranz on Sep-03-2002 02:37:

Memento OWNZ. I have the DVD, even the packaging is genius. Anyways... why would u want to watch it backwards? Takes the creativity away from the movie. What's a matter? XTC burn all the braincells, so you forget the beginning, or do I mean ending??? Hmmm....

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Sep-03-2002 03:58:

i saw it when i was super-drunk and i didn't get it, =P.

gonna watch it again though...

Posted by Orbital on Sep-03-2002 19:01:

Didn't like the ending -- i was sorta like "is that it". I mean i thought the premise was cool though and the acting from Guy Pearce was great.

He ends up lieing to himself, just so he can survive. I suppose there's a MSG in there somewhere.
