Should I buy a WRX?

I suppose this question belongs on a car forum, but I can't find any decent ones, and besides that I can't be arsed to create an account, so here it is.

I currently have an '04 Maxima. Wonderful car. I'm moving back to Seattle, where maneuverability and parkability are somewhat important, and where driving into the gravelly mountainous roads is hella important. Other important considerations are a good sound system and teh quickness.

I'm looking at the 2012 WRX because it seems to meet all of those. Well, except the audio part. Any other contenders I should be considering? I kind of don't want to spend $2k on a system that adds nothing to the resale.

I was going to say looks don't matter, but then I heard someone suggest a RAV4 and realized I don't wanna look like a real adult.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and driving on slick roads is... a tiny bit common.

A WRX is a great car. Especially if you're going to be living in an area with notoriously bad weather, the symmetrical AWD is very nice. I read an article about WRX's and STI's having some of the highest insurance rates for commonly owned cars in the US though. I've had a Subaru for the past 3 years and I love it.

What about Mitsubishi Lancer?

As a Seattleite... go for the WRX.

Crap, just realized they don't come in automatic. I can drive a stick, but the girlfriend can't, and besides I'd rather have automatic (or paddle shifters).

The Lancer would have to be Evo, and that's $$$. What else is comparable?

You might try looking at the Dodge Dart. Its top model has an engine similar to (if not the same as) the Fiat Abarth and prices at $22,000. Internet rumors are that there's a model coming out for 2013, comparable to Mitsubishi's Evo (300hp DOHC & AWD - not sure on the turbo-charger) but I don't know how much that will cost.

anyway i own a wrx sti spec c... awesome car. 370bhp.

in UK automatics are for disabled people, americans are plain lazy

gears are half the fun of driving, they put you in control of the performance...

a wrx is a drivers car. no point in going for a drivers car that drives itself.

Hmm maybe I'll have to reconsider, but the Dart doesn't seem to do it for me.

The Outback has the clearance I'd want for hiking, but the 2.5 is slllooww and the 3.6 is $$$ (the local dealerships only carry the Limited editions, and run $35-37k.

I'm surprised there's no car with AWD, automatic, and decent acceleration for under $30k.

Teach her how. It's really not that difficult.

Volkswagen Tiguan S with automatic transmission and 4Motion goes for around $26,000. Anything more will put you over the 30K threshold but there are a lot that hover around there and look pretty reasonable.

Looks like the Tiguan S gets to 60 mph in 8.5 sec. Maybe I'm spoiled for wanting a car that does better than 7.0.

$30k really isn't so bad. It's just a mental barrier. And a new vehicle at $30k will be around $25k for a used one a couple years old, if I can find one... What did you have in mind?

And, it's not a Ford. Still, doesn't have the fluid lines of the Subaru, either but...

2013 Dodge Journey - 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, pricing just over $30,000.

So do I. Although there are automatic cars here, we all need to learn how to drive with manual cars so we're prepared to drive whatever appears in front of us.

I wish the STi's paddle shifters were on the WRX. Then I could feel like an F1 driver instead of a bloody wanker.

Dude. Just teach your woman how to drive stick. It isn't that hard. If you teach her about clutch control and how/when to shift gears, she can pretty much learn it herself imo.

Shit, I taught myself how to drive just by reading shit on the internet. All I needed was a few hours and an empty parking lot.

shouldn't really bother buying a performance car with an automatic gearbox... what's the point?

although a woman who can't shift gears shouldn't be let loose in a performance car anyway, automatic or otherwise

Just get an Impreza if she can't drive stick. It's essentially the exact same car without a turbocharger. The 2.5L does 0-60 in under 7 too. That's the car that I have.
