Which one is better to start with??Turn table or Cd Player
I was wondering which one is better to start with djing. Turn tables or cd decks??? What are the drawbacks of each...which one will take me faster to being a pro-dj ??? Which one will make my mixing more advanced in a short period of time???
Well, the main advantage of getting turn tables is that you can get the latest songs straight away. Most of them don't get released on cd. Th eonly way to get them is if someone rips them to mp3 or wav. or something.
I'm not aware of any big names that only use cdj's.
Yeah....
Yeah man you are right !!!
I've never tought of that before !!!
You can get the new singles...
Thanx 4 your answer but how about the mixing teq. and all that stuff (easier beatmatching maybe??)
I would say beatmathcing would be easier cos you have the ability to physically touch the record or the platter to nudge it forward/slow it down a bit. Also, being analog, you have more control over the pitch slider.
I think the whole "hands on" approach would make it easier, though i don't use cdj's so all i can offer is my opinion, not fact.
Yeah thanx...it would be a good idea to control the tune with your hand...
I agree with you

Thank you Michael
Thank you Michael....that was all I need to know about the drawbacks and all that stuff. Yeah...at this point your experience talks...but I still couldn't get one thing...
Should I try the difficult way cos it sounds better???
Ahter, it's all up to you. I did exactly what bigjimslade did, only that now I have real tables. Or you could start with some tables and get a single cd player later. And then you could add another.
There's a lot of things you could do. Personally, if I had to do it all over again, I'd start with turntables though.
Vinyls most likely
Im going the opposite direction. Im starting with CD Players but im wanting to be in the mobile dj business. Not the pro club dj.
Vinyls dominate, no doubt about it. And someone said about the "COOL FACTOR" spinning vinyls. I had no idea singles comes first on vinyl. I thought it was cds or mp3s. Hey man!!! I burn some tunes on cds! Im no ahole.
Man, whenever you ask which is better cd or vinyl on all dj related boards, im sure 98% of the time vinyl is the top choice. I just picture vinyl for the pros.
It's really your style and preference on what way you want to go. Im sure whatever way you go, people won't give half a shit on what format your playing. Most important is your choice of tunes
Yeah another fact is that I don't have enough money for TTs either...but as Michael said...if I buy the CD deck now, I may have to say "few" more years to buy the TTs. Is it really worth waiting???
You guys are right about vinly sounding groovy but I wanna ask your opinion about mp3 mixing decks??
You know numark has one and it looks excatly like a cd deck?? Do you know anything about it??(Numark DMC-100)
As long as it sounds good;it doesn't matter for me;the thing is the cheapest and it may be good idea for a pracitce (cos guys;if I buy something good like cd decks;I may have to wait a decade
4 turn tables.)
I have mp3s too...if you adivce it I'm going to buy it soon.
opinions??

I have made up my mind....THANX
I'm going to wait a bit more (maybe few more years
) and buy myself the best vinly stuff !!!
Yeah I'm not really expecting to be a world wide famous dj but being famous in my own area would be nice
Ohhh life, I wanna earn my own money right now !!! You know how difficult is to live with the money your parents give you

Anyway thanx !!!

Here are the Pros and Cons according to what I think between Turntables and CD players:
CD Player pros:
-wider variety of songs to access.
-can sometimes get songs earlier than you can on vinyl.
-can get hired to many occasions (dances, Bar Mitzvahs, etc.)
CD Player cons:
-people think it takes no skill to plop a CD in.
-can't really go pro with it. In other words, you'll most likely do it for the money rather than the pleasure.
-wider variety of songs. What I mean by this is that you most likely would go from a mainstream dance song to some piece of crap pop song and it wouldn't sound right.
Turntable pros:
-specific genre: electronica/hip hop (i.e. less music to buy)
-can go pro with good mixing abilities and stuff.
-you get the respect a real DJ would get.
-it's so much more fun than just putting on a CD.
Turntable cons:
-can't really make that much money off it unless you become really good/well known.
-Lots of equipment (As your collection of vinyl increases, you need to carry more around)
Those are my opinions on the pros and cons. I feel that turntable pros outweigh the cons, therefore if I were you I'd get turntables.
i started off DJin nearly 3 years ago on some Numark CD decks (i cant remember the model - they were at the pub i worked in). having gained skills on beatmatching and mixing on the CDs, i found it really easy when i got my Vinyl decks a couple of years back.
using CDs, you can create cue points which at the press of a button can be taken back to - wherever you are in the track. you can also make the deck find the first beat of the tune so you dont have to mess around tryin to find the first beat (in the case of the vinyl). and a last point, it tells you exactly how long each track is, therefore letting you know how long is left remaining on the track.
i believe it is best to start using CD, but on the other hand you could become relient on the features only available on CD decks which arnt available on Vinyl decks.
my opinion
I started off with my Numark CDN 88 because I didn't feel like I was ready to try TT's. I agree with both points stated earlier: You can get releases sooner by downloading them (opposed to waiting for months until you might have a chance to buy it) and putting them on cd's but I agree with worrying about getting in trouble if you're performing and the wrong person happens to hear it. Granted where I'm from people burn cd's and play them all the time but that's not the point. I burn my own cd's with promos not available yet for my own enjoyment but I'd much rather wait until I get the vinyl to play them (got to support these great artists). OK, back to the main point: Learning to beatmatch and doing many things with the cd decks finally gave me the courage to save up and try TT's. In my opinion it's just more fun to be more hands on when mixing. I can watch DJ's for hours who are spinning because it's fun to watch, a cd DJ doesn't really do much in that aspect. I also agree that if you want to try to go big time TT's are the way to go, I just started and I absolutely love it, just make sure to save lots of money, it's a fun yet expensive hobby

Like a lot of people here, I started on CD-DJ gear (Pioneer CDJ100). I think that was a good place to start for a couple of reasons. Firstly, costwise, CDs are a lot cheaper than vinyls (and of course you can always burn your songs). [Just for the record I have absolutely no objection to DJs downloading mp3z and burning them onto CD because the role of a DJ is to promote music, without them, people would never hear the tunes] Also, with CD players, you can do stuff like 21sts or balls which require pop music. This allows your DJing skills to become quite a good source of income. This is quite important, because basically if you want to make money out of DJing, you'll need to do a lot of boring, mundane, commercial gigs. I'm sorry to say that, but if you want to make money, that's the path you've got to take. So I suggest you buy CD players to start out with.
However, once you've mastered beatmatching, phrase matching etc and hopefully earnt some money from your local pub or whatever, I think it will then be time to buy some TTs. That's because (for trance) TTs are far superior.
So in conclusion. Buy CD players, earn some money with them, then buy TTs.

.. read that
think it's basically an arguement of viynl vs cd tt's.. although that wasn't the original question asked in the thread

I still see CD's as the superior medum but you will be criticised and told you are not a REAL DJ. Also I have to dissagree with EbolaCola on one point. If you're a CD DJ and you're not going to go pro, I think you would be doing it more for pleasure.
All this said I have TT's and wouldn't trade them for the world. And buying vinyl is the most addictive thing I've ever done.
Fuck CD tables, fuck em in the ear. They will be the downfall of it all. Its just not the same with cds, with vinyl, you ACTUALLY touch the music. Everything is Digital these day, BAH!!
Edit: oh yeah and i will be the first one to tell you that if you do use CD's your not a DJ, your just a fucking button pusher.
