Cool outboard FX

I'm not talking about big money Eventides or Bricasti's, but more affordable stuff you can pick up for not much more than plugin money.

So far I've bagged a PCM80 for 350, and I'm on the hunt for a TC Fireworx for about 300 too. I recall them being about 1500 new not so long ago, but they're half that now.

I really don't know that much about what's available, but I've heard good things about the older DP2/4 reverb units so I'll look for those too, and also I wouldn't mind finding a dedicated delay unit too.

If I was in the market for a dedicated h/w delay, I would look no further than a TC Electronics D-Two.

Good call

I'm so glad a proper person answered and didn't suggest a guitar pedal.

The plebs.

That's drastically retro, and I approve.

There have been many times that I've considered buying another rack and filling it with TC Electronics units. Nice units for the money.

A live engineer friend of mine had a Yamaha multi-FX unit back in the day that he swore by (and got incredible live FX with), and I think it may have been the same one that Richard recommended.

It's just so cheap these days it's ridiculous.

I'll probably get a quadraverb just because, and I just noticed that Vermona do a rack spring reverb unit for 250. More flavour.

Axe FX 2
LINE 6 HD
or a bunch of guitar pedals.
Or design your own with a G2 nord modular.

No idea why you would waste money on something when a plugin exists for it. Things like hardware delay , reverb save a bricasti are just idiotic and only serve a purpose for live use. Even then , they are a dying breed, They just don't serve a purpose.

The only thing software doesn't quite do as well is amp and distortion sims. Dont' see why you would buy anything but what hardware does better.

I mean the D 2 ? You really want to spend money on something that hasn't changed in about 11 years that only has a stereo in/out ?

Plugins destroy these machines.
Deal with you GAS because these are some fucking stupid ideas of things to buy. And don't start talking about workflow. They are so fucking cumbersome, the only reason one might buy them is as I said, live or just stupid and want to look like their rack has something expensive in it.

sometimes i wonder what the fuck you people eat for cereal sometimes.

Step away from your keyboard, take a deep breath and look around your room.

I'm buying them because I want to buy them. They please me. I like to touch them and use them. They look cool, they sound cool and they make me feel better about myself.

And I will never buy a G2. I don't want a G2. I never will.

That is all.

I have more outboard gear than you will ever own. You just list some retard shit that offers nothing over plugins. THey don't sound cool. THe ones that do, are out of your budget so i really don't fucking get your methodology other than you are just another person that likes to talk about buying shit they will never use.

Posted by tehlord on Mar-15-2013 00:02:

You can be really hurtful sometimes. Go to your room.

lol.

you guys have no idea what I do in terms of EDM. Nor will you ever find out the actual name when everything gets rolling.

The sad part is all those tracks i posted from like years ago, the only EDM tracks i ever made sound more current , original and better mixed than the shit you guys do a decade later. And those are all of them. And i pretty much nail every style before there was a word for the genre. And if that isn't enough, tiesto no thanks to Tunnel Trance hammered pressure and I never was credited or paid.

And that is from someone that was into rock and roll and decided to fuck about with EDM for a bit. Literally a fucking road bump for me. And that was from a Canadian living in Alberta. So fuck you.

Posted by tehlord on Mar-15-2013 01:17:

Did you buy a wrap on the way home?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-15-2013 01:18:

A what ?

I'm sorry if i upset you. I just wish you would be smarter with your buys.

Would love to hear what you're doing these days.

And if your sh*t is any good, I will find out since you posted pics of urself a while back.

You're not too old, right? Probably just in your 30s I'd guess.

U should make dubsteps though. Fashionable stuff.

I hope this doesn't make anybody cry, but I just bought a new piece of hardware to go with my SSL thingy-jobby. I haven't read the manual yet, so I don't know what it is, but it's called a Focusrite ISA Two, I think. My Sweetwater guy told me that it's some sorta decomflatulator or something that would make me sound like Skrillex. I'm gonna go read the manual now to figure out what it does, then not use it.

niiiice alberta in the house

fact is he is right, none of you think about actually making music for a living- so few , SO FEW producers selling music right now are using much outboard gear in the production process. sure there are the exceptions, but these are like super niche guys whose uncles have a fuckin system-700 in the garage and shit. you will never be them. they are all from france and germany anyways good fuckin luck... you have to get realistic about your music and see what it is you need to get to a level where your music is something people can get into, for most people its song writing and not technical shit. technical shit can all be solved but a bad song will never be a good song

also using hardware in the studio when not working with live musicians is so tedious its ridiculous... if you are working on music you gotta be fast, especially if you are working for someone else whos just twiddling their thumbs in the background.. you wanna start plugging in and bussing reverbs and shit? fuck no!

i guess im more of a creator than an engineer, i always leave the super super technical shit to the people who have done at least 30,000 hours of studio work, always made sense to have someone you trust help with mixing also- makes my life easier

Can only speak for myself, but I earn more on the producah ecosystem then on releasing. Really no one cares about releasing anymore the market is saturated with content, I can't even be bothered anymore to listen to podcasts or Beatport top100's basically dropping on my NAS automatically, in EDM, really there is too much content.
