how do you organize your trance mp3s?
I'm looking for ways to make my file structure inside my electronic music folder more navigable, and easy to access certain songs/mixes. So I'd like to know how you guys organize your folders just to adopt some new ideas. Do you organize your mp3s by artist, genre, or perhaps by release date? Do you put singles in one folder, albums in another, and essential's in another? Post up!
soda
just put them where you know you have them
C:\FTP\
\Music\
\Unsorted\
\Singles\
\Upload\
\Albums\
\Live\
E:\FTP\
\0-day\
\New Releases\
\Archive\
\Uploads\
Yep...alota mp3s spread over two HDD's. Works for me..I know where everything is. So Blah!
EDIT: damn..why aren't the spaces working?
in a big round box
Organizing mp3's is a big priority for me... i used to have all my mp3 in differend folders like:
g:\singles\Armin van Buuren\
g:\singles\Tisto\
g:\Livesets\Armin van Buuren\
With confucing filenames like Armin van Buuren - Live at Club Eau, the Hague [20-04 2002].mp3
Finally i managed to make some sort of system in it... i moved alle my music to a folder called: g:\music
and renamed all my music to 1.mp3 2.mp3 3.mp3 4.mp3.... it took a long time but it was worth it.. no more confusion when i'm looking for a track.
Just keep them on my mp3 map, wait until the HD is full, burn them all and start downloading again
My audio is a bit of a mess for now, except for the live material. Here's how it's set for now (Downbeat is all Ambient-Space/Chill Out stuff and Upbeat is all "Club" material or any material that can be danced):
C:\ADMIN\Audio\Electronic\Downbeat\Albums\(Artist Name)\(Album Name)\CD Number\(Tracks are in here, with this format: 01 - Artist - Song name). For "Various Artists" albums, I make seperate folders in the ...\Albums folder called "Various Artists (Compiled by [Name]).
It goes the same way with the Upbeat directory for albums. For live material, I have a folder labeled "Live Bootlegs" in both the Upbeat and Downbeat folders. In there, I just have all of the long files in this format: Artist - Date in YYYY-MM-DD format - Live at (Event name)
I name tracklists after the MP3 files and put "tracklist" at the end of the name. For the A State of Trance series, I have a special format: A State of Trance - Episode ### (YYYY-MM-DD) - (Artist name) - Part #.
I'm thinking about simplifying all of this by just getting rid of the Upbeat/Downbeat thing because many artists make BOTH now. Also, for single tracks, I have a folder labeled "Singles" and I make sure that "The" does NOT come before the name of the artist (like "The Thrillseekers". I rename those files to "Thrillseekers, The - TRACK TITLE") because in English, "the" isn't a word to sort by.
Here's what the new directories ar going to look like:
...\Audio\Electronic\Albums\Artist Name\Album Title\CD # - CD Title (Like CD 2 - Bright Side)\MP3s, CUE files, TXT files (tracklist/information) of the tracks of the album. CUE and TXT files will be named in "Artist Name - Album Name - CD # - CD Title" format.
...\Audio\Electronic\Live Bootlegs\Name (depending on the circumstances, this can either be in "Artist - YYYY-MM-DD - Live at (Event or Location) - Part number" or "Title (like in series) - Episode, Segment, etc. number (YYYY-MM-DD) - Artist - Part, Hour, etc. number" format. Examples here include: "DJ Tiesto - 2002-02-02 - Live at Dutch Dimension - Part 1" and "A State of Trance - Episode 42 (2002-04-04) - Armin van Buuren - Part 1".
...\Audio\Electronic\Singles\Name (Either in "Artist Name - Song Title" format or "Artist Name, The - Song Title" format)
As far is the organisation of the singles is concerned (hundreds to thousands of tracks in one directory), I'll be making Winamp Playlists (M3U files) so, that I can play specific material in a certain order. I'll title those in either this format: 00 - Playlist - Artist Name - Order Name (examples here could include Chronological, Vinyl/CD/Cassette/DAT/MD/DVD/etc. title, etc.) Or this format: 00 - (Genre) Singles - CD ##.
I'm doing all of this so that it's easier to for people on DC and other places to find all of my material. For other genres, it'll follow either the same (for albums) or a VERY similar structure.
I hope this was easy to understand, however there was really NO easy way for me to put it, as all of what I said above applies to the way I organise my audio. If anyone can't understand, I'll just create a legend and label everything using simple 3-or-less-letter abbreviations (for here ONLY, not on DC, etc.).
Fuking confusing ali...just shove em in a folder called MUZIKK

i have 30 gigs of mp3 now and this shit concerns me big time!!!
i need a fast way to organize my shit and burn them to dvd-r
mp3s simplfified!!!!
here's waht my tree loox like....
c:\my documents\my music
+trance singles
+trance livesets
+other music
+ripped CDs
+(each CD in it's own directory)
all mp3s are sorted by artist name. for example: Artist - Title
once I notice about 700MB of mp3s in a folder...I burn it to data CD so I can listen to them on my mp3-cd-player. ;-)
My computer crashed, so right now I don't have any music to organize. About 2000 songs, all gone
Anyway, my system worked really well, when it was in place.
I had all my music in
C:\My Documents\My Music
+\Trance
+\HipHop
+\Rock
+\R&B
+\Other Electronic
Then I just had it alphabetized by artist in each genre. Then the songs alphbetized after the artist name.
My Documents\My Music\Trance - Armin van Buuren - Sunburn
My Documents\My Music\Trance - Paul van Dyk - For an Angel
My Documents\My Music\Trance - Paul van Dyk - The Silence
etc...
I had over 2000 songs on one hard drive and it was working well, if not a tad slowly, lol.
Possibly not the bet way to do this, but this is what I got :
F:\Full CDs
F:\Maxis & Vinyls
F:\Singles (here I have A, B...Z folders)
G:\Mixed CDs
G:\Live Sets
Don't have much of mp3s, but sometimes I got confused while trying to find something... Now I have this system - works for me
i am an organizational freak so every dj has their own folder...i had it before like live sets, albums, etc but i hate searching for my fav djs mix so now its alot easier PEACE
I've got mine all over the place on my PC so i wont call that sorted...
... my fault eh... anways most of mine are on CD-R... they are upstaiors in my room sorts neatly...
Organizing MP3z
D:\Trance\Artist - Title(+date/live/location if applicable).mp3
Note: I rename all files to that format, picky about caps, spacing and proper "dash (-)" positioning and especially proper ID3 Tagging.
20GB and still going...
Come On Folks lets keep it neat and simple
I use the View, in the window (XP) options and select -Details
What do ya geT? A vertical list of files, with Id3 Tag Info on the right side....scrolling all the way down! Beautiful isnt it?
with 4 hard drives and a laptop and 350GBs of space and another 800 CDs burned, you sort of um, just lose track
i just pop in random cds from time to time and hey, there's always something good on them

edit: actually i download so much, i rarely get to pop those cds in. i just listen to whatever is on my hard drive. once it gets burned, it rarely gets heard again. sad, but THEY SHOULD STOP MAKING SO MUCH GOD DAMN GOOD MUSIC!!!
classic shit i just keep on my hard drive

1. I download the track
2. I check if it's cool enough for me too keep it
3. I rename it like this:
ARTIST - Title (Remix)-xxx(bitrate).mp3
4. I put it into a "new" folder
5. I wait utill there will be enough mp3s to record a cd
6. I record a Cd
7. I put all recorded mp3s into my mp3list for easy access
8. I save some new or very cool mp3 in a "recorded" folder for listening and mixing
