The official TA ambient thread

I've noticed that many people here seem to listen to a lot or even almost exclusively ambient stuff these days, so how about a general purpose thread for all things ambient? Much more productive and in touch with most active TA's taste than another thread about Tiesto or JOOF.

Personally, I've been listening to more ambient on the go these days since I have a pretty long train ride every morning and ambient is much easier on the ears than dancefloor stuff and background noises just become part of the track which I find really cool. Also I'm always looking for tracks that fit a certain specific weather or mood and ambient is great as a sonic wallpaper.

Starting this off with one of my alltime favorites, been absolutely in love with this track ever since I've heard it on Ben Klock's seminal Berghain04 mix. I really like this sort of absolute tranquility in ambient, my knowledge of the genre isn't exactly huge outside of the big names so I'd appreciate some similiar recommendations. If you want to talk about dark drone stuff though, you're of course welcome to do so as well

I also think this thread has more potential than to just be another youtube dump thread - feel free to ask for recommendations, tell us what stuff you're feeling right now, why you're feeling it etc. It could become a pretty good place for discussion since ambient seems to be one of the topics that many TA's still are passionate about.

How about some new shit for like promo purposes.

Oh, wow, "Birth" by Henrik B is really one of my favourites.

My favourite artists these days are Thomas Kner, Biosphere (Geir Jenssen) and Tetsu Inoue. If I look at the tracks I choose to listen to, I'd have to say that "Ambient Otaku" by Inoue is my favourite album.

Biosphere worked with Namlook on Fires of Ork.

Inoue did a lot of collabs with Namlook (62 Eulengasse, Shades Of Orion, Time, 2350 Broadway) and Uwe Schmidt (datacide), Uwe and Bill Laswell (Second Nature), Jonah Sharp (Electro Harmonix), etc.

Ross154 also has "Mayflower."

I've also been listening to Boards of Canada (older stuff), Autechre (more techno-y), Harold Budd and Brian Eno...

I'm going to listen to that Ross154 track that you link to...thanks. What is it? "Apricot."

Often, I go digging through labels like FAX and Erased Tapes.

Carbon Based Lifeforms
Drexciya (or is this considered techno)
Robert Rich
Library Tapes
Solar Fields
Sync 24

Hmm, I have these playlists on my Spotify, "best of" artists, and most of the artists in there do ambient stuff. I'll look in there for some gems to recommend when I have a chance.

These tracks pull the heartstrings out of my chest. Try the first one on that morning train ride. Almost 50minutes long, a harsh beginning -- and very much worth anyone's time to zone out until its end.

beatless:
Maeror Tri - Myein http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppMEQRfP6yE
Mountains - Hive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaZMWjS7rEs
Gas - Zauberberg 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVxnbBkCIJA
Bonobo - Black Sands (Duke Dumont's "Grains of Sand" Reconstruction Edit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jznUrVUzCIA

beaty:
Borealis - Minerva (Hecq Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDkhCJLKxmo
Shigeto - Evergreen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q_IBVVFs90
Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana - InnerZone http://www.discogs.com/Steve-Roach-...e/release/90826 (not on youtube unfortunately)

Absolutely. This album in particular: http://www.discogs.com/Bohren-Der-C...t/master/313410

Robert Rich & B. Lustmord - Stalker

One of my favorites, the movie is great as well.

Also, haven't seen anyone mention Biosphere yet. Shenzhou and Substrata are ear porn.

As for Steve Roach, I am unable to just pick a few albums. Here we go...

Structures from Silence (1984)
Dreamtime Return (1988)
The Magnificent Void (1996)
Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces Part 1 (2003)
Immersion One (2006)
Dynamic Stillness (2009)
Back To Life (2011)

Robert Rich....

Trances / Drones (1982-1983)
Somnium (2004)
Nest (2012)

IMO their best collaboration together was Strata, a simply fantastic varied album.

Would also highly recommend the collaborations between Steve Roach & Erik Wollo (Stream of Thought, The Road Eternal).

Another newer producer I really like from the mid 2000's onwards is Between Interval. Secret Observatory, Autumn Continent, and Radio Silence are particularly strong albums.

Im leaving psybient out of here because its already discussed enough in other threads.

Recently, I bookmarked this list on Discogs:

http://www.discogs.com/lists/Best-A...All-Time/120454

I ordered and received Harold Budd / Brian Eno With Daniel Lanois - The Pearl CD (#1 on the list) which came with an mp3 pack.

I forgot to pack the CD for the trip that I'm on but I do have the mp3 pack so maybe I'll listen to it soon. It's on Spotify if anyone else is interested.

I have most of the top 20 listed, but not "Suso Siz - Hypnotics" which I'm totally interested in exploring. He says, "Some of the finest ambient guitar work recorded."

Does anyone know of any established communities or radio stations dedicated to ambient/electronica/etc? I have slowly started to get live gigs playing this kind of stuff and I'd like to build up a bit of a profile, if possible.

No doubt, and it's really the fans keeping them alive. It's great they been able to go on this long.

Posted by AlphaStarred on Nov-14-2013 15:35:

Completely forgot about Tomita.

- a mix of modern classical and ambient.

Tangerine Dream probably has some good stuff, too, but I haven't listened to them much, so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

Love this guy's stuff:

An obscure piece I ripped from an acid/techno vinyl:

In response to sonix, I probably don't consider m83, Hammock, and Chicane as "ambient" though I do enjoy their music a lot.

I remember listening to BOC's Tomorrow's Harvest and I must have liked it because I purchased it (or maybe I purchased it before I had listened) but really, I don't remember now... I'll listen again when I have a chance and report back.

I think I prefer Tangerine Dream's older music.

There's an album by Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd from the 80s or 90s that I've tried to get in mp3 format for a couple of years. I listen to it at Grooveshark. One of my friends has sent me 1/2 of it.

I also like many of the artists recommended above and:

Alva Noto and Noto and Sakamoto
Air (Namlook) mentioned above
Ophoi (darker, droney)
Svartsinn (darker)

As noted, Soma FM has several excellent channels for this, such as Groove Salad, Drone Zone and Space Station Soma. The always brilliant Intergalactic.fm has a channel dedicated to downtempo/ambient stuff as well, called The Garden. There's also StillStream, which I haven't listened to for yonks, but I seem to recall that it brings the goods.

Anyway, I'll have to once again urge people to track down any recording they can find of BR-Alpha's old chillout series Space Night. The music, often from the back catalogue of the superb downtempo/electro label Elektrolux, is absolute bliss, and goes perfectly with the space-themed visual backdrop. Apparently, the show is being brought back to the channel, only this time it will have nothing but Creative Commons music: http://www.br.de/fernsehen/bayerisc...enight-106.html

That Space Night is sounding very nice, right now. Thanks for sharing. That ambient track you posted in rubez's thread should also be in this thread. Very nice one, indeed.

Best ambient/downtempo series ever, got about 11 of them. Earthviews is some of the best audio/visual stuff I've seen. Are they just re-airing them or will they be completely new?

Try reading the article, it is in English.

This should be pretty good, I was hearing talks about bringing it back.

Posting some favorites!

This guy has made a lot of really solid stuff. My favorite album of his is "36 - Hypersona", but pretty much every album is good imo.

This one is from Benn Jordans "space themed" ambient album, and in my opinion one of the stand-out tracks.

Ulver is a norwegian band with black metal roots, but in the late 90s they started doing electronic stuff. The link above is their album "Lyckantropen Themes" in its entirety, and seeing as the whole record it is based around variations of one little theme I think this makes for a better listening experience.

Secede and his label-mate Kettel were pretty much responsible for starting my interest in ambient, and this track is a gem from his 2003 album "Bye Bye Gridlock Traffic".
