Sad Have You Fallen Into the MESS i Have -- Addicted to Downloading?

ok so i woke up today.....

and as usual i went to my comp to see if my overnight downlaods went through...

then i went and got the tracklsist for them...either here or at DP..

then i put them in my folder named "TRACK OUT"....which is my folder that i have where i put Live Sets i recentley got that have to be tracked out and make a CUE sheet for....

then after i skim throught them and track them out they go to there respected folders...(for example if its a Picotto live set from 2000 it will go into my "Mauro Picotto" Folder then in the "2000 Live Sets" Folder...) then i add it to my COLLECTION LIST..

anyway....i woke up today and saw i had like 50 sets in my "TRACK OUT" folder....and i was like what the fuck.......this is NUTS....

there is NO CHANCE in hell i could EVER listen to it all...it would be IMPOSSIBLE....

then i said lemme look at my Collection List....so i opened it up and scrolled down and down and down and down and down and down and down and down...etc etc etc.....then i counted and it came out to around 700 live sets, 300 Albums, 100 trance videos and countless singles.

i have way tooooooo much crap....so much that i dont even know what i want to burn to CD to listen to in my car and ENJOY...

i am going to see Tiesto in 2 weeks...and i swera to God i have no clue what hes playing anymore because i never lsten to him anymore...and i know alot of people dont liek Tiesto but i do...thats not the point....

the point i am trying to make is that i have fallen into a mess..where i spend so much time downlaoding Live sets that i never get to ENJOY any of it.....half the time i cant burn to CD cus i have to make DATA CDs cus i run out of room on my harddrive...and since i am so OBSSESSED with downlaoding i have failed to get a job so i cant but alot of CDs...

I mean for real...i actually have 11 Live sets from DJ Dan...i am probally the only person who EVER would downlaod these..lol but i have them....i have Alex Morph, Tillma Uhrmacher and Mark Spoon live sets...i dotn even know who they are...i dotn even care....but i am a freak where i want EVERY SINGLE LIVE SET they EVER did...or i am not happy.....

so for instance if i have 4 Warmduscher sets...i need everyone i can find.,..even if i dont like the tracklist...i WANT THEM....

it has become a SERIOUS ADDICTION.....i know it sounds funny...but it has actually prevented me from getting a job because i cant miss second of searching for live sets...i also didnt go to a club with my friends on Saturday night because i wanted to download...and they went to a club where there are LOTS of HOT CHICS...but i felt it was MORE important to finish my Blank & Jones Live Set collection...i dont even like Blank and Jones...but i HAD to get them.....

so in 2 weeks when i go see Tiesto i wont even know the tracks he drops./...last year when i got a new Tiesto or Picotto set i was SIKED and burnt it to CD right away and listened to it non stop in my car or wherever....NOW...the last Tiesto set that i burnt to CD was his Dutch Dimensions set from 02.02.02....every other set up to now i have but havent burnt to CD cus i am too busy listening and tracking out and seraching and sitting on the internet downaloding garbage liek Alex Morph, DJ Dan, Tillman Uhrmacher, Warmduscher, Kai tracid, Cosmic Gate, old AVB set, old Ferry sets...

i mean not all of it is garbage but the majority is and the majority i would NEVER want to listen to in my car....

so anyway...i have declared today for myself "D-DAY"....which means "DELETE DAY"....i am going through my entire collection today and tonight and tomorrow and deleting what i dont like or will never listen to...i am brekaing Data CDs..i am going all out....so MAYBE just MAYBE i get back to listening to what i fell in LOVE with and not be so concerned about having the largest Live Set Collection on the internet.,.,..

to some of you my problem seems dumb..but i know some of you understand,....

and if you ask WHY i am going to delete the stuff and break data cds instead of just archiving them...well its because of this.....for example i have those 11 before mentioned DJ Dan live sets...NOW...if i come accross a 12th i will want to downlaod it...BUT BUT BUT BUT if i delete all those 11 DJ Dan live sets that i have i will be like nah fuck that...because then i would only have 1 of his live sets...hard to explain....

basically i dont LOVE trance anymore because of my addiction...and i am not excited to see Tiesto in 2 weeks like i was all the other times i saw him...and its because i dotn know what he plays anymore...because i have so much crap....so i am jus sticking to downloading live sets from DJs that i LOVE....such as Tiesto, Picotto, Ferry and J00f and maybe a FEW selected DJs liek Gielen, Fijneman, PVD, AVB, Astrid...depending on the tracklist of the live set.....

dude, you should get a download-councelor, for real

Posted by Floorfiller on Oct-07-2002 21:45:

i know what you mean. i have a HUGE archive of music and i don't even know why. i think that i just like the idea of having huge amounts of shit stored more then anything else. i have pages and pages of live sets and its always growing. i don't know what i want to do now that you bring it up. do i really want these sets. what is the point of having all this music that takes up soooo much room. i remember initially i just listened to live sets to get ideas of what singles to dl, but that has changed and now i do all of it. hmmmmm this needs more thought. kinda on the subject, i read today that oakie has 25,000 vinyl in his collection.... 25,000. and it grows daily. i don't know what i would do with all of that.

I somewhat know the feeling. I have ~8500 mp3s (including albums, livesets and misc stuff), most of it on data CDs (125 I think). I'm too lazy to check if I have that one song I download, so then when I sometime check my mp3list I can see that I have the same song, on 3 different CDs.. I also have loads of mp3s that I have no idea what it is and why/where I downloaded them. But WTH.. Maybe some day, I'll start listening to all mp3 CDs, which would take about 2 months, if I listened to them non-stop.. Bleh

Posted by Floorfiller on Oct-07-2002 22:40:

i think that a lot of this "addiction" starts here at the site. i mean you go into the tracklist section and you see new shit everyday and then its a race... who can id the most... its like a game. i mean i have so much god damn music i recently thought i might actually try and archive every song with everymix out there... seriously i have a five hundred page word document with just tracks that i've dled. you should see the tracklist archive i have its a god damn book. most of the time, i have complete tracklists for most of the sets that are from the past in this archive, its just such a chore to search threw it that i don't go to the trouble. teist014... these are serious problems. what should we do????

first off we should compare our archives to see if we each are missing things ehehehe j/k.

Posted by jinxed84 on Oct-07-2002 23:28:

ahh i know what you mean...i download an unhealthy amount of music, or i used to at least. in the days of AG i would que up like 200 songs at a time and just let them go. i am constantly looking for new music because i listen to music more than 6 hours a day and at that rate you get sick of stuff fast you i constantly need to replenish my new tracks. its a bad cycle cause you download so much and it get unorganized (my downloaded tracks folder had over 5GB of mp3s) then i get sick of them being a mess put them all in the folders they belong in on my second drive then i have a clean downloads folder

then im like "ooo i have space lets download every track thats mentioned in the latest threads and every track in those people sigs(was much easier with AG). and its a pisser when your HDD's break too cause that happened to me and i thought i was gonna cry. i had almost no music so i went on a spree and downloaded many many GB's in the span of..like 2 days.

as of now i have a word document on my destop labeled "stuff to get" full of all stuff i dont have yet that i need to download. ugh im sick.

excuse me while i go download all those tracks and categorize my downloads folder

LOL, i think we all have the same problem here. It's just a lot of fun to collect. My music music collection got out of control a long time ago when I had the stupid idea to keep everything I ever downloaded.

Then I saw Coup posting a thread about a mp3 database program which rocked. Now I actually catalogue everything I owned. I've already gotten rid of more than 30gb or so of music that I didn't like. I keep most of the stuff I have (mostly because I find 2002 is just smokin' with great new track releases).

Trust me, it's a very good idea to use a database program to catalog your mp3s, it will make collecting music a whole lot more enjoyable and more organized, and it's very easy to use too.

Why couldnt u leave ur computer downloading while u went too see blank & jones and score with "hot chics" ???

im the same tho.. im quite addicted to downloading livesets and vids to. Instead of breaking those cds..... u could send em my way

What is the point of downloading garbage? All it does is kill bandwidth! No offense dude... but sounds like u gotta get a life outside of the box u live in.

It's kinda like collecting buttons or stamps or bottlecaps... just looking at one of your bottlecaps won't give you much pleasure, but the mere thought that you have so many bottlecaps makes you happy. If someone was to tell you to throw them out because they are garbage, you just can't do it, because you spent so much time collecting them that it would feel like such a waste.

It's like that feeling you get when you put all your MP3s into winamp and look at the playlist just to see how many hours of music you have... and you realize how long it would take you to listen to it all... so many songs that you'll never listen to, but just the fact that they're there to show off is comfort enough.

I feel for ya dude

that is so true. it's hard for me to throw something away, but on the other hand, when it's gone, you'll soon forget about it. btw, i've collected stamps and bottlecaps

A sure-fire way of slowing down is to suspend your internet account for a short period of time. That's what happened to me (well, i didn't voluntarily suspend it, i was, um, behind). Granted, i went crazy cuz i couldn't log in, but after a while i got used to it (spent more time fragging on UT to pass the time away).
Coming back on yesterday, this was the first place i came to just to see what i missed (and from what i see, not much really. No offense to anyone).
Prior to my suspension i was at work and, to kill some time i tried to write down all the livesets i had, and came up with 40. Not as many as the rest of ya'll but, for a 56Ker, that's quite a lot. And it was all in a 2 month period.

Anyway, try doing something like that. Keep your puter off unless you need it for something important like school, go out and meet all those hot chicks.

Posted by whiskers on Oct-08-2002 18:52:

hum... ... i have that.... i feel bad unless i'm downloading something... i can't just simply be on the internet wasting bandwidth, i absolutely must be downloading something, especially when there's stuff to download.

it's just the fact that i download whatever i can because stuff is hard to find... but recently i got access to a HUGE ftp (THANK YOU, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!) and there's just so much stuff, and it's so easy to leech, that it's not really interesting. well, it actually is, but for the rare stuff like old-ass essential mixes from 1990s and max graham or william orbit live. i refuse to download recent sets.

i just don't know how to explain it... maybe it's just that feeling when you are expecting something, like a track/set to finish downloading (especially on my 56k) and then you can listen to it...

Posted by ali92 on Oct-08-2002 19:26:

I'm like that as well! Whenever I'm away from my PC, if it's on the 'Net, IT'S DOWNLOADING! Whenever I don't want something that I have a lot of (like pairs of headphones, copies of CD-Rs that I revised and put new versions of on CD-R, etc.) I just give it away to one of my friends. If it's something expensive like A/V equipment, other hardware, etc., I sell it. Even though you can't sell CDs (unless they're originals), you can give old copies away (like I have done before). I've given about 15 livesets away to a friend a few weeks ago and soon, I'll be giving away more to someone else. I'm doing this because I have multiple copies of the same thing and I recorded these when I didn't know about how to make CUE files or burn CDs with those, so all of those CDs are 1 long track apiece. I'm obsessed with coming home/waking up/coming back to my PC after a movie and seeing new music/files on it, waiting to be properly tagged, named, listened, and backed up! So, tisto14, you're not alone! There are more people on here like this than me!

Can you tell me what prog ur using, because I have 20 CDs full of singles and I dont even know what exactly is on them. I want to organise these tracks alphabetically without having them on my HD.

And for tiesto14. I know what you mean, i had the same thing some time back when i first got cable. I wanted every single set of Tiesto PvD and AvB. I even went to download PvDs and AvBs ASOT and Frits radio shows, now i just dont see the point of that. Im more selective with my music these days, and a hell of a lot more picky.

Remember QUALITY over QUANTITY
