How long before you played out?

How long did you practice at home or at small parties before you played at a club or at a real event?

Ive been spinning for about 3-4 months. I think Im getting pretty good . . . I play at least 1.5 hours a day after work, and a couple hours per day on the weekends. I learned to beat match maybe 90% flawlessly within 5 days of starting. I spun at a party at my house last week, and did really well, despite having a few drinks and people talking to me and bumping me and stuff. I got another gig at a friends party in a few weeks, probably for 50-60 people.

Anyway, my friend has good connections with a local club owner, and I may have an opportunity to play in the lounge area soon. Its not my club of choice, but Ill take what I can get right now.

I know Im not ready yet, but was just wondering how long other people waited. I wasnt nervous at all playing at my party, but I dont want to mess up at a club and ruin my reputation and confidence at my first gig.

honestly..wait as long as u can..because playing at home..and playing for more then 10 people is completly different..

I never planned on playing out anytime soon, but I've been getting alot of encouragement to do so since my party. I figure I'll do a few parties, then maybe next spring summer, try to get a gig and one of the smaller clubs around here.

you have to think you're ready
if you don't think you're ready, then you're going to go to that club and prolly mess up cause you're in that mindset

as for the question, i think it was like 3 months after i started that i played out the first time

In my opinion parties don't even compare to playing at clubs. People at parties know nothing about mixing. You fuck up at a club, its gonna be bad from the crowd.

Dunno, maybe 3 weeks after I first started practicing I had to play on a major trance event. The dj before me f*cked up bad, so the people thought my stuff was pretty good

True. ALthough the party I'm spinning at in November will be a bunch of experienced clubbers . . .

I didn't spin out until almost a year after I started djing at home. Since then I have improved so much too. If you think that you are ready to play out, then record a mix live, with transitions that you haven't practiced before and see how good they are when you listen to them in headphones. If the transitions are flawless, then you're good to go, if not, then back to practising. I would also post the mix so that others can critique it. Even if you think it's a great mix, someone is always bound to know more about music mixing etc. than you do and can offer up some advice. It was many months of mixing until I started learning about the science behind the music that I was spinning. That helped me learn a LOT about how to mix.

Posted by Tony Morello on Oct-23-2002 23:03:

yea, start recording every time you mix, try new things and see how they sound after

i do this almost every time i play
i record it and take a listen later on and pick it apart and see what sounds good together and what doesn't, as well as track selection
does the set flow nicely?
should certain records be only played near teh start or the finish of the set?

be very critical of yourself
pass a copy onto someone who will critique it as well (like on here)

speaking of which... i should spin a set and post it here

i didn't start spinning out at a club or rave until 1.5 - 2 years after i started spinning

granted i played house parties and things like that before, i don't consider that 'playing out'

i wouldn't suggest jumping the gun when wanting to spin out...
you might think that you're really good now, but that could be inexperience talking...i know with me that's exactly what happened
i recorded a mix a year after i started spinning and thought it was absolutely amazing at the time...but i listen to it now and it was absolute shit

and if you spin out to early and fuck up, you'll get really discouraged and potentially tarnish your name...which either means you'll have to work twice as hard to build up your reputation because of that shitty performance...or you'll have to take the easy road and change your dj name

my suggestion...practice practice and practice some more
then when you think you're good enough...practice some more

then when you spin out you won't have to work your ass off to get booked because you'll be such a sensation that promoters will be coming to you

All good points. It just reaffirms what I've been tellng people . . . I'm not ready!!!

I have been recording my mixes a few times week. They aren't flawless, but they aren't too bad usually.

how long did it take u to beatmatch then ?

Posted by 24K on Oct-24-2002 10:18:

I played out basically before I before I knew how to spin. It was a learning experience,,, and now that I look back at it I totally regret it. Nothing bad came of the 'incedent',,, however I wouldn't reccomend playing out until you gain some confidence and know how to properly beat match. I've only been playing for 6/7 months now,,, and am now just beggining to be able to mix traks properly. From what my friends who have been DJ'ing for a long time tell me,,, it takes on average of 1.5 years to become good enough to play out. Don't get me wrong,,, it may take others considerably less time and others longer. Basically,,, the only people (depending on where you're from) who will be able to recognize you mistakes are other DJ's,,, you'd be suprised on how clueless some people are. The best advice I can give is that you should play out when you feel comfortable to do so.

peace.

If you have bomb ass tracks and know how to beat match, then go break your cherry now. It's better to fuck up and get it over with then to wait 1.5 years and fuck up then, tottaly making you want to quit. Just get it over with and you'll be fine for the next time.

If you get in trouble when out the first time, just mix in the break downs. heh

Where else would I mix?

I have been spinning for about a year now and I'm playin my first party on November 2. Yea, it's just a house party, but I figured that I needed to start somewhere I'm alittle nervous about it, but I think I will do just fine.

Posted by jc on Oct-24-2002 14:18:

ive been mixing on my decks for about a year now

had my first gig 5-6 months ago.. I impressed myself!

everyones different but I reckon a good 2 - 3 years of solid bedroom banging will get you very ready to play out and not make a complete fool of yourself.

Posted by hey cheggy on Oct-24-2002 15:17:

t'was about a year before i first played in a club. I'm glad i waited as well cos for ages, I though i was ready when i reality, I wasn't and if i went out before my time, i would have fucked everything up for the future

Posted by DJ-Kuza on Oct-24-2002 15:37:

You can't damage your future on your first time out. If all hell breaks loose you can just change your DJ name and start over. I mean, it's not like anyone will know you in the first place.

Posted by hey cheggy on Oct-24-2002 15:45:

It's a bit different over here. Everything is really localised

Bah I got the concept of beatmatching pretty quick, a couple of days after I started. Of course it wasn't BAM, beatmatch in 5 seconds or so right away. I think I still needed about 30 seconds to get it going together. Phrase matching was another story, I knew the theory, and tried to stick to it, but sometimes it really sounded like the mix was breaking up (you know, like having too much going on at the same time because mixing in too soon, or the opposite, having an empty spot because I was too late to drop the new tune).

I've played out pretty much after that, but lately this hasn't been the case. I blew a year on university because I was spending more time behind the decks than behind the books (chemistry, yay). Now I'm doing an sound engineer course and I've decided to really go for it, so I placed my dj'ing on second place. I don't really have the time right now (lot's of stuff going on at school). I guess it's been about half a year, if not more, that I've not spun seriously. I kinda miss it though.

Posted by Magnus on Oct-24-2002 22:06:

For me it was 4 months after I started spinning at home that I got my first club gig. I know a lot of bedroom DJs and some ask how in the hell did I pull that off because they have been doing it for years. Its all about who you know. Being in the right place at the right time. I would spin at my friend's house for our afterparties. Me and my friend both were spinning one night and this guy who we had never met got invited by a mutual friend. Little did we know this guy was a promoter for a club, heard us spin, and the rest is history. I feel really fortunate. Because of that chance meeting that night, I've had 4 gigs since then and several that lay ahead.
