2017's words that can f%ck right off

1. "Toxic". Toxic co-workers, toxic relationships, toxic politics. Never any explanation of what makes something "toxic" as opposed to simply "bad". Generally seems to be used in pathetic articles about what types of nasty people to avoid. Fuck right off.

Contributions welcome.

"Trump" also see "alternative" and "grab"

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-30-2017 19:49:

Agreed on toxic. The only people who use that word or incessantly talking about how everyone and everything else BUT THEM is toxic, are usually complete and utter failures in life. Like hello, if everything is so fucking horrible, maybe take a good long look at the common denominator.

"Great", I can't hear it any more, Trump totally gave it a different meaning....

Your toxic stance on the word 'toxic' is problematic.

(I'd really love to see 'problematic' go the way of the dodo - just another convoluted synonym for 'bad')

2. "Fascist/Fascism". Not really a 2017 word, but the word has peaked way too frequently in the last 12 months both in the US (November and January) and here (during the impeachment), it's hard to take whoever uses this word seriously when they use it to refer to anyone right of Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders...

And, no, Trump isn't a fascist, he's just a despicable human being.

How is toxic contemporary?

15 years plus at least.

Posted by Lira on Jan-31-2017 16:27:

How about...

3. "Snowflake", when used by right wingers to discredit leftists whenever they draw attention to some issue they disagree with.

4. "Sea lion", when it serves the opposite purpose - that is, to make self-righteous leftists feel that debating them in a civil manner is not a genuine engagement but a way to piss them off or something.

These are pretty recent!

Not 2017 words per say, but I'd very much appreciate it if the sentences like "I can't even" would finally fuck off.

Can't even what? Finish the god damn sentence.

Followed closely y by "I'm so excited", used in the most mundane circumstances and usually nothing to do with something that's about to happen. Just a general statement of current status.

Because it still crops up constantly in 2017, and therefore it's high time it fucked right off.

I will accept Lira's nominations as words that can indeed fuck right off.

5. "Normalise". Another bullshit, faux-technical description of something bad. Rather than advocating or tolerating unwholesome values, a dodgy cultural artefact must now be "normalising" them. Rather than fearing the rise or growth of the alt-right, or racism, or anti-EU sentiment, people must now fear the "normalisation" of it. Fuck right off.

Posted by Woony on Jan-31-2017 18:29:

This has been a bullshit word for the last 15 years but anyways, 6. "sustainable". 99% it's not actually sustainable but just slightly less openly shitty to make people feel better about themselves.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Feb-01-2017 02:08:

i think "toxin" is far worse than "toxic". you can guarantee that the former is being used by some pseudoscientific arseclown.

I blame Britney

Ew. The only place that word should be used is in music production.

On that note - have we had enough of "cuck" and "beta" yet?

And I just can't hide it

Posted by JEO on Feb-01-2017 08:55:

The words 'mindset', 'setup', 'outset', and almost every word the hand-waving department uses repeatedly in their attempts to convey some half-thought idea to someone who is supposed to put it in a more concrete form.

And I guess it should be mentioned that for me these words appear in otherwise pretty rural sounding speech in the Finnish language.

Oh Christ, yes. Good shout. If you call someone else a "beta" you have only confirmed that you are most definitely not an "alpha male". Now fuck right off.

Posted by Woony on Feb-01-2017 14:10:

The great irony of course being that, as far as I know, the whole idea of alpha, beta etc. social structures came from research on wolves. And at some point people realized that those structures only exist in Wolves living in capture, not those in the wilderness.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Feb-01-2017 18:51:

Even if it did apply to wolves, it's still bollocks. The whole point about alpha males is that they're supposed to effortlessly command attention and respect. They don't prowl around the Internet trying to put other men down in a fug of sexually frustrated self-loathing.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Feb-01-2017 19:12:

Plus blame women for their failure to achieve success with the opposite sex.

Posted by Lira on Feb-01-2017 20:19:

37. "Cultural Appropriation". I mean, sure, some "borrowing" may well be racist, but the world "racist" already exists, so I'm not sure this expression does any good. As it peaked last year, it came along with oversensitive zealots who'd tell people what hairstyles were allowed... And, if your political stance makes you sound like Kim Jong-Il, you might want to dial it down a notch.

Posted by ziptnf on Feb-01-2017 20:24:

While we are on "Cuck" and "Beta" how about we add "SJW" (Social Justice Warrior) to the mix? Fuck, I mean I understand that there are some Tumblrina's that are 400lb pink-haired feminazi hambeasts who want you to apologize for being a white male, but these days the alt-right has labeled anyone with liberal leaning principles as SJW's and it's fucking retarded.

Posted by Vernon Wanderer on Feb-01-2017 20:32:

"lit" I know I'm getting old but just fuck off.
