Vocal trance/Cheese trance?

What are ppl's views in here with respect to vocal trance and to those that get into the charts... with respect to commercialised tunes from PvD and Tiesto even... should producers be slammed cause they overlay vocals on top of their tracks?

I mean, to what degree, makes a trance track cheesy, the vocals? The synth? The beat?

Surely, some lyrics that talk about love, being lonely, being a stronger person etc is quite cheesy... but there are some that I think are pretty good. Even some tracks are being remixed by bigger jocks...

Well vocals are usually what make a track cheesey, but at the same time they cna make a crap track amazing, im a big fan of female vocals

But everything combined makes a track cheese in general

But most of the time DJs ruin good tracks with vocals to get them into the charts

there are some that'd argue that all vocals in trance are cheesy (Sy, u muppet ), I disagree, but it's getting harder and harder to find quality vocal trance
as for the synths and the beat, they go a long way to making a track cheesy

and PvD aint commercial

Posted by Martin McG on Nov-06-2002 20:49:

depends on the way the vocals are used! too many vocals imo wastes tracks! especially all the lovey vocals but then again if vocals are used imo correctly and not overdid then they can add to a track!

If its in the charts then its cheesy, Besides since when has most stuff in the charts been proper trance? DJ Sammy - Heaven aint trance, Not by a long shot. I could have slapped my mate who said it was. Ok Dee Dee - Forever might be pushing it. Its melody is quite powerfull but i would say it fits more into the club genre. I hate all comercialised music and how people call it trance cos its not. I fucks me off becuase people dont buy it most people dont like it and it feels like people are taking the piss out of our music when its in the top 40. A big reason i like trance is becuse its different from what normal people like. The community is small compared to all the mosh shit and R&B, all your usual crap. Thats what makes it special, its different and u have to be different in a sort of way to appriciate it.

I think it is - but just really really shit trance.

I think your Sammy, Ian Van Dahl and the like should be labelled as pop-trance as it's obviously aimed at a commercial audience...

Vocals are in chart music, therefore vocals in trance make it pop music. Which means vocals in trance are cheese!!!

If u like at it like that tho, u can say there are elements of trance in tunes by Ian van Dahl and Scooter. But that doesnt mean that the rest of the Trance scene is cheese just coz of scooter and ivd..

i dont totally agree with you there Sy cos look at tunes like
arome - hands up (S P mix)
picotto - lizard
tiesto - urban train (C G mix)

but then again there are tunes like
knobcheese(sammy) - heaven
IVD - will i
fragma - dunno individaul tracks but theyr all pish

so as ive said before it depends on the way the vocals are used! imo vocals that are the main part of a track are tacky and pish! as long as they aint overdone then i suppose they can be alright depending on the rest of the track!

Coming from someone who likes Sun Decade

Posted by timmy b on Nov-07-2002 19:49:

is it me or is evry1 forgetting delerium - silence.... 1 of the all time best tunes ever ever ever! which wouldnt b half as good without the vocals imo

Posted by Yella Fella on Nov-07-2002 22:11:

back then in 99 when i first got into trance, artists like sonique and lost witness were one of the first to do vocal trance, and cause there wasn't that many, it was unique and to me, it was good...

These days, there are that many, it really takes the piss out of trance

Posted by decode on Nov-07-2002 22:19:

I would love to see some of these record ******s release some evil techno into the top 40 mwuahaha. Least with techno your safe

Posted by Yella Fella on Nov-07-2002 22:21:

haha can u imagine that? some dark fat underground techno competing with westlife in the charts?

surreal...

Posted by decode on Nov-07-2002 22:29:

hehe. Yo where abouts in sheffield u from man?

Posted by Yella Fella on Nov-07-2002 22:57:

soz for late reply, was mixing with me new decks and mixer!!!

Im from Crookes, student area. You in Shef as well?

Posted by decode on Nov-07-2002 23:13:

Ah right nice one. Yeah i am. Im from Swallownest/Aston which is the otherside of sheffield, About 2 or 3 mile from rotherham.

Posted by Yella Fella on Nov-07-2002 23:22:

i have no idea where that is... despite moving to shef around late Jan this year, i still havent got chance to look around lol... 2nd week i got a job and to this day, still working in that shitty admin place... moved through 2 companies, outsourced and moved to meadowhall now...

what do u do? u mix/DJ/produce at all?

Posted by decode on Nov-07-2002 23:25:

Ahhh, Least u can get yourself a job here man. I work in a shitty pub which is getting fucked off at christmas, Im gonna the crasher. I dont dj or produce im not a musician. Id sooner be in the crowd. What about yourself? U do any clubbing?

Posted by Yella Fella on Nov-07-2002 23:44:

well previously, i was living in boro, lived there all 23 years of my live... and now, im trying to go out and shit... basically living a life i missed out on from 4 years of being in uni haha

i do go clubbing now and then, but mainly do funky house and hip hop nights at republic... been to GC once when M.I.K.E. and ferry corsten played!

I just sold my gemini 626 pro mixer or sommat like that for 100 quid... bought myself a new pioneer cmx 3000 cd player plus djm3000 mixer... its well fat... waiting for some rack mounts from sound control near NCPM building to arrive... so i can mount the units on.

Im trying to produce from the little knowledge of cubase i have learnt in college before giving it up to come to shef. Got a few other programs im using like acid, cool edit pro and reason which i have yet to discover!

So i take it u into trance? What artists u into? Im very into PvD and tiesto styles

Posted by decode on Nov-07-2002 23:52:

Nice one m8. That sounds like some seriously expensive equipment i no idea what it is tho. You would get on with my mate hes really into production and stuff. Yeah i love trance & techno its the only music i listen to, I dont really have a fave DJ or producer becuase i like all styles of trance (Tech, Prog, Epic, Acid ect). DJ of the moment would have to be Matt Hardwick (Hes been awesome this year) Mario Piu is one to watch out for.
Are u gonna the nec next week? If not what about the 30th at the republic?
