Genre map (literally)

Map updated (4th version already)!!!! Thanks to Acid Junkie, Ishkur and Vortex_SA,^Verona_my^ and many other people for helping me with it

Posted by noikeee on Nov-16-2002 00:39:

err..

without wanting to be an asshole, you probably spent a lot of time making that image, and the design is kinda cool but

that map kinda sucks.

and I think you just invented some sub-genres

Posted by amit on Nov-16-2002 01:30:

yeh...i think its cool. i think u made a sub genre!

Posted by BonGWateR on Nov-16-2002 01:42:

what the fuck is 'death trance'?

Posted by djdl on Nov-16-2002 02:33:

I can't believe people take ghetto tech seriously, I find it very funny. Check out Dj Assualt, people actually dig him around me.

Posted by Vanilla on Nov-16-2002 02:49:

...or you could have just went to ishkur.com for the exact same thing with samples

What subgenre did I make? All right, maybe there's no such thing as Drum'n'braz, but it's the least I could do for my country's beloved d'n'b movement

It does exist... it's the kind of trance that evolved to EBM (as you can see on the map). It's some kind of evil uplifting trance There was a thread about it last month, I guess

Who said I took it seriously?

Ishkur's idea was very nice, but the problem of his guide is that he spends half of his time bashing most genres, so you don't really learn much out of it. I did some research on history of electronic music and stuff, so the noob will be happy (I hope). And I will add samples too (and differently form Ishkur's guide, I'll add more than one sample per genre).

Posted by Photo_bot_2k1 on Nov-16-2002 05:23:

i say stop complaining and help him out
lol

then get a really print out a big poster of a map we all agree on and post it on your bedroom wall

Posted by zarathustra on Nov-16-2002 20:34:

Nice map, I assume it starts around the middle right?

Where's Hardstyle? I didn't see it.

I hope you're not too serious

This map kinda sucks...

Posted by escee on Nov-17-2002 00:45:

nice idea, but way too many sub genres.

Posted by Fir3start3r on Nov-17-2002 01:21:

Thumbs up Great idea!

Of course there's going to be a lot of sub-gendres...

Personally I love the whole idea; awesome!

Now if we can actually get some HELP instead of the moaning this can be honed and perfected...

"The complainers are always being passed by the ones actually doing it"

Kutos to you man!

Thanks for the feedback, it's being really helpful

E-music: E-music is the way Brazilian people call electronic music: don't worry, it's not a sub-genre or anything... I was just saving some space

Breakcore: It's (very) old-school jungle.

Yeah, and what will I say to the noobs about the roots of drum'n'bass?
"On the eight day, god created jungle, and he saw it was good" I'm trying to respect all genres here, no matter if I like them or not If I were to choose to exclude a genre which I don't like, it wouldn't be hardcore, that's for sure It would probably be garage or Tekno-Rio funk

Yeah, it's starts from the grey area It evolved from Hard trance (it's on the way from "Goa" to "EBM)... and I wasn't sure whether I should create another sub-genre ... I'll fix it, thanks

Help me out then, why do you think I posted it?

Anthem/Epic: In fact, I'm seriously thinking about merging them into uplifting trance. There are some minor differences, but it's mostly technical stuff, so I wouldn't really bother to know the difference

Symphonic: It's trance with real orchestras, which has got nothing to do (at all) with anthem/epic trance.

I'll try to merge as many sub-genres as possible, but we're talking about 40 years of electronic music, lots of things changed, you know?

Hey, you know what?

I think the map is pretty damn accurate. I mean, as accurate as it can be--you're never going to please all of the people all the time.

I give it my *thumbs up*. Way to go.

Also, something else that puzzles me: if you guys hate my music guide so much, why do you keep suggesting it as a valuable resource tool in every thread about electronic music genres?

I've already explained, time and time again, that it's not trying to be an educational resource or a primer or a historical document or anything of the sort. It is, as it was originally, just a vehicle for me to make disparaging remarks on all the banal forms of electronic music out there, which, much like anything else, happens to be well over 90% of it.

Posted by Lira on Nov-17-2002 16:33:

Cool, I didn't know you were a member, Ishkur Anyway, I do like your guide (why would I be doing something inspired on it if I didn't like it? ).

Ps.: You still looking for some buttrock tunes? I think I can help Contact me via ICQ for more info (or send a pm)

Posted by Civic on Nov-17-2002 20:48:

anyone here also addcited to Rio Tekno Funk?
i think almost every track in the last 283 years featured that style....

sorry, but the map ist just too... complicated. Too much Styles which arent recogniced by anyone here Ever. Also Talla next to Detroit is a bit...

but it also has its funny side

Hey Ishkur,

I had no idea were on TA either, lol! (Or Canadian for that matter).
Cool!
I've used your flash TONS of times because literally there was NOTHING else to use.
It was the only mapping of gendres out there; and yes, I was aware of your *disclaimer

Maybe you and Maaz can work on a updated, serious mapping together?
That would be awesome...
You could hand out 'assignments' to the TAs.
ie. Give ppl gendres of music to find samples for.
Just a thought...

Nice to see you here...when did you join? Or how long have you been lurking?

Take care.

Posted by netw3rkd on Nov-17-2002 21:11:

Good idea Firestarter. And Ishur, Rank 1 IS trance.

Posted by Sarcoman on Nov-17-2002 21:37:

I have to say that this map is actually really good. It may not be 100% accurate, because differnt people are going to have different opinions, and some genres should be linked to multiple other genres, because their influence came from a variety of sources. But to those of you bashing this map, and saying it sucks.... LETS SEE YOU DO BETTER. Maaz.. to you and all others that put work into this, well done.
