places to visit in japan?

ill be in tokyo from dec 24 --> jan 7... staying with a friend the whole time for free (yay!) .. he has to work some days though, and i dont want to annoy him by always being around so i need fun things to do in tokyo during the days. have any of you visited there and have suggestions on where to go/what to do? it can be touristy or unusual, i dont care. i plan on seeing AVB on jan 4 (w00t!), and im going to go have lunch with miki one of the days.. but i need stuff to do the other days! all i have planned so far is the ghibli museum

so yea, suggestions are welcome!

I spent a few hours walking around tokyo by my self a year ago. It was awsome. Everything was an adventure.
Some funny intresting things to do I say are :
Go to the fish market down town by Ginza. Its a fucking trip man, blew my mind. I was wow look at all these people and weird ass fish. All the rest of the people were just doing their thang. It was cool, like nothing I have ever seen.

Go to the Sony building they got way new gadgets in there that wont see around here for a long time. I bought a wicked CD player there and its still not sold here. You got to pick something up like that cause its your only chance.

Try to talk to shop owners. Its so funny. Just pointing at shit and they are all talking slow and thinking that you might understand them. You know like we all do to them.

If you are really adventures. Get lost on the trains. man they are crazy. So many and so many people.

This is just funny things that I find amusing. Everything there is so cool to just see cause its so different. You can walk around and be entertained.

Hope you have fun and if you want some more ideas just watch the jackass movie. They know whats up.

A friend of mine lives in japan, she loves it.

she's in osaka right now teaching english, she recommended KOBE beef =above all else, it's supposed to be so good.

she also went and checked out a bunch of temples and stuff, i can get more info if you want.

Posted by mongeone on Dec-10-2002 08:28:

hello im living in osaka japan

i suggest you go to:
roppongi (shopping district and pub district
shinjuku (night clubs and pubs)
shibuya (its got all the record shops just ask the black guys hanging around for manhatten records or cisco - manhatten records are hip hop mainly but its the best known one and theres trance shops right next to it)
ginza (upperclass shopping expensive but its meant to be crazy to just go look at)
yokohama (cojoined city)

and you could even do a day trip to go see mt fuji!

make sure you go to and onsen (naked bath house)

and you can go to tokyo disneyland as well!

plus more then likely yoji biomehanika will be playing somewhere in tokyo cause hes playing in osaka late december.... and if you wanna go night clubbing remember the name cyber trance velfarre it seems to be a pretty big japanese stlye party!!!

anys have fun!!

Hint: learn to read in Japanese (katakana, at least). This way, you may recognise some words in English that might be written with those cool symbols... it'll be helpful to read and understand what words like "wota" and "miruko" mean

Posted by sothis on Dec-10-2002 09:11:

as it turns out, yoji is spinning on december 26... but it was a choice between that, or armin on jan 4.. so im goin with armin ^_^ .. velfarre might be cool to check out, one problem is tho that im staying with my friend the whole time for free, but he isnt really into techno. perhaps i can convince him tho!

and im taking my second year of japanese, so ill be able to manage signs and shit ^_^

Hey mongeone...

I need a little info on Japan.

for example.. Costs

Is it expensive to live there?
Or jobs... umm, I'm in Network Engineering. Would I be able to score some jobs there or is the competition intense?

I'm thinking of travelling there on a working visa and maybe staying for about a year.
I'd appreciate any sort of info that you think will help.

cheers.

Posted by Illusion on Dec-10-2002 15:15:

ooh Kko you too... got any useful info? Tell me about kyoto.

Posted by Slylee on Dec-10-2002 15:34:

you'd think after living in japan for 2 years i would have made it to tokyo, but i didn't the only time i was close to it was when i hiked Mt. Fugii (nightmare!). i was living near Hiroshima so i would go there a lot and party. great city. i also love Kokura...my advice would be to just get on the shinkansen and go to the nearest cities and just explore go to roppongi district...i heard it's insane. learn how to speak some general phrases like, "how much is this" (can't spell it, but it's pronounced "eecooda des ka")hahahah i try also remember in japan it's "Toilet" not "bathroom". they won't know what you're talking about...and speaking of toilets let me know what you think of public restrooms there when you get back

This might be a very stupid question, but is it safe to live i Hiroshima?

I thought the city would be closed down or something after the a-bomb coz of radiation.

Posted by Slylee on Dec-10-2002 16:12:

hahha no a lot of people have asked that believe it or not. it is a perfectly safe city to live in...it's like NY city only cleaner very big and exciting. there is a little memorial there too that is left over from the bombing and a museum too. it's really depressing to go in there and see all those horrible pictures. i mean, i know they bombed us first but u feel like a piece of shit in that museum if you are american...

oh yea and sothis, go to the pachinko parlors!!! they are fun if you are into video games and stuff...

Posted by Munken on Dec-10-2002 16:25:

hmmmm, i honestly thought Hiroshima and Nagasaki was abandoned today coz of radiation, you never really hear anything about what happend to Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the bombs was dropped.

Well this tread shouldnt be about this, so have a nice trip sothis.

Posted by biznology on Dec-10-2002 17:01:

havent been there, but in response to the abomb question...

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Virtual Tour

that would fill you in, but as you can see there is plenty of city. the memorial is beautiful too! |

Posted by daydreamer on Dec-11-2002 04:35:

Sad me too

i want to go to Japan too, but seeing how i am a poor broke hispanic male i dont see that happening anytime soon. Hopefully as soon as i graduate and have some money i will make the trip. I heard it is expensive to live there. can anyone feel me in.

Posted by mongeone on Dec-11-2002 05:01:

its pretty easy to get work here most australians come out here on a three month holiday work visa and work in a foreigners pub where you dont need to know any japanese. i always go to these pubs and tlak to the guys.... if you come check out some pubs callled "sam and daves" and "bar isnt it" they are the main foreigner bars. anys to get the visa i think all you need is to prove you can provide for yourself if all gets fucked up so you have to show them a bank statement with like $4000 in it (just borrow it off friends for a day or something)!!!

then once they have come out here they either keep on reapplying for the 3month visas and leave the country to thailand or korea every 3 months for a day (i think you can normally do this 3 or 4 times before customs catch onto whatb your doing) or you can try and get sponsored by a business for work and that means you can get a 2 year or 1 eyar working visa. and your set.

but other wise its pretty easy to get a job its easier if your not in tokyo because they require a higer standard like uni degrees and stuff for english work... but most people work in a bar and then teach english under the table on the side!

on a different note ive been to both nagasaki and hiroshima and they are both beautiful cities!

opps just noticed i forgot costs. yes it is expensive but if you want to stinge it out on money when you first get here before you find a job its quite easy.... you will never go hungry because mc donalds is fuck cheap compared to everything else (of course you doint wanna live off that but when your hungry and ona budget its all good) plus you can find cheap accomodation pretty easy look for business hotels and trya dn shack up with someone in a double room. or backpackers accomidation but they are shite ebcause the doors are locked at 10pm. but once you have a job dont worry youll be fine you will easily have enough money to have fun a live (yes i put that in order of importance)

soemthing else that might be of benifit to you or any other TA if you come to osaka/kobe and need a plce to stay for a couple of days my house is your house! (well my apartment is your apartment)

Posted by Illusion on Dec-11-2002 05:35:

It'll probobly be about a year or so before I get moving. I still have 6 month before I graduate. But when I do I wanna find people to go with. So if anyone's game, I'm in.

Posted by mongeone on Dec-11-2002 05:40:

I would suggest going out exploring..it's always the best of fun to be on your own in such a vast city..even the flow of the crowd and the shops will be amazing

Posted by Lira on Dec-11-2002 18:10:

The tower is called just "Tokyo Tower"? Couldn't it have some proper japanese name like "Honorable red and white tall Tower from Tokyo"?
