What sport is rougher Football or Hockey?
or more specifically, are you tougher if you play in the NFL or NHL??... i 've heard hockey fans say it's hockey because of the scheduel and playoffs etc but players in the NFL are bigger and hit more frequently head on... it's a close call... i've heard this debate plenty... what do you think?
I think football is rougher. i see what ur saying with the regualar football season being 16 games and hockey 82, but there might be games in hockey when u dont even get hit. Football you get hit constantly depending on your position. QBs get sacked, RBs get hit every time they carry the ball(well majority of the time), WRs get hit after catches, and the linemen are extremely physical with each other. how many times have you seen an OL have someone fall on their leg and it get's broken badly. I've played both, and again, i would def go wit football
hockey sometimes with real fights

I'd say hockey. In football, you get to rest more frequently I find, more time between plays. In hockey the injury potential is higher because the players are going way faster = hit with more momentum. Though lately, hockey hasn't been as rough. The real difference is the 82 games a year plus playoffs to football's 16 a year plus playoffs.
Obviously you guys have never played rugby union or rugby league .. much rougher than either gridiron or ice hockey..
and the players don't wear 10 layers of padding either....
I'd think that football is more physical because there is a potential for injury on every play, while in hockey you probably wont be too bad unless someone does something illegal.

Hockey...
The potential for injury is great in both sports...not that is the intent...however, I've skated for 10 years and had my share of stitches from sticks, pucks and skates...not to mention one blown out knee. And the fights are the best...nothing like a little 'positive motivation'...and yeah...it obviously doesn't hurt the opponent beating your fist into their helmet.
I agree that rugby is rough[er] since there is no pads...however, the discipline is different...illeagal tackles ect...the reason for pad development over the years in football and hockey is because of the increase in physical play and subsequent injury (look at the padding of the 40's football...or i should say lack there of)...of course the more padding just makes you hit harder and harder..not necessarily a solvent for the problem.
However, proper football...uhm no...great athelets, fun sport...but a little trip up doesn't deserve rolling around on the ground for 3 minutes. I took my first 24 stitches after i took a puck in the jaw not only after my shift, but after the period. Stick tape is good for more than sticks.

PS...if we are just going to name a random "rough" sport...Irish Hurling and a close second a Rugby Fest with Way too much beer involved

Ouch man. That's insane
ill have to agree with webmeister on the rugby union bit
especially in lower subdivision grades where there arent too many eyes on you. i say damn to fairness!!
ive seen many a player walk off with his fair share of rakes across his back and let me tell you there is not much in the world that feels like studs running down any part of your body and only finding the ones on your back in the shower afterwoods
horah for rugby
Rugby is crazy...football and hockey look like chess games compared to rugby..lol

Yeah, sure rugby is tough without pads and all, but the speed of the players is pussyshit compared to the NFL...theres a reason why the NFL is hailed as the most successfull sporting league in the U.S(a country where sports has an unbelievable, ridiuclous impact on society). American football moves at an incredible pace...it's a game where the true form of winning is mental intimidation, and this comes with how fast you can outrun or how hard you can hit...and both extremes aren't pretty at times. The NFL may seem like a bunch of oversized muscle heards trying to kill each other, it's much more deeper and less blunt than that...it's a game of wits combined with pure physical play, and that's why I think football is a much more rough and physical sport than hockey. While hockey does have it's dangers, such as a rubber puck flying at fatal speeds, and players using natural inertia to hit each other, that's not the point of he game...hockey is more of finesse and precision OVER physical play. Of course, in any sport, physical dominance is a key factor, but hockey relies less on this and more on technical skills. That's not to say that hockey isn't physical or hard...I'm sure it takes skill to manuever a puck while a bunch of guys are flying around the rink at dnagerous speeds, moreso to evade and get a shot off. Hockey is a real sport...a physical sport. I'm not gonna defend football because I feel I don't need to. Just look at a game..that should tell you enough. |
rugby
2 x 40 minute halves
continual running and pushing
you get breaks at scrums and lineouts...you have to push in scrums and then lift in lineouts
continual tackling, not just pushing and positioning
according to a study by the australian institute of sport, forwards in rugby were reported to sweat more per kilo than any other athlete in any sport....these are taken from the l33t too not just fat dudes who play subbies. thats gotta be sufficient proof that rugby is tougher
finally, that is all
The paddings are there for a reason...football started as a physical game, so they implemented pads for saftey purposes. As the years went on, padding technology improved because the players got bigger, faster and stronger.
Football
4x15 minutes quarters...add about an extra 30 minutes for ad and huddling, timeout etc...
Sprinting, repositioning, sprinting, repositioning, which is much harder than continual running because of the strain effect it has on the heart and body...ever try sprinting 40 yards, moreless 10 yards, squat back down, sprint and squat? Your dead after 3 plays. That's why they have subs.
They don't tackle in the NFL...they hit. And they hit hard. Again, that's why the pads are there. It's a self feeding cycle...becaue the game got more punishing and physical, they have more pad...and because they have more pads, the players are able to hit harder.
OFFENSE
Receivers: Sprint, block, catch...they say that the Super Bowl Rams(99) receivers(Holt, Bruce, Proehl, Hakim) are fast enough to win the 4x100 relay in the Olympics...add this intensity and speed to continuos repositioning and exploding off the line, not to mention extreme concentration while trying to catch a ball knowing your gonna get waxed by a safety.
Backs: The fullback has to be the most miserable position...blocking for someone else everyplay?
Linemen: No explanation needed
DEFENSE
Linemen: No explanation needed
Corners and DBs: Continous sprinting downfield with the receivers, often getting burned and trying to keep up. They get merited for breaking up a play, but are pointed out for not.
Linebackers: IMO, the most difficult position to play in any sport...they gotta read the run, blitz the Q, provide zone coverage or drop back for pass coverage...mind you they are sprinting at every turn. If they read the wrong play, the defense falls apart.

Relevant fact # 1 :Girls wear pads during their menstrual cycle.
Relevant fact # 2 :GridIron players wear pads before during and after a game.
CoIncedence? I think NOT. www.nfl.com
I gotta give it to rugby players...those metal spikes they wear are fucking insane.
And I didn't say rugby players weren't tough either...I've seen them play, and it aint pretty.
But...

| haha dude there is no such thing as continuous running in rugby (forward wise). furthest most forwards will run is 3 metres BUT sprinting is fine compared to having to hit and drive every time youmeet the opponent. straight away you gotta get back up....someone else gets tackled, you have to clear over the top and protect the ball.....on and on recycling possession just so the backs can score. training every night (preseason) is sprintwork cardio and in season its just one night a week |

| i personally feel its stupid because there is no skill in throwing youself at someone |

| I love both sports...both represent 'toughness' in different degrees, but what I also find is that rugby fans are very biased and tend to be ignorant towards the physical punishment they only see on TV, while they have no idea what it's like to play the game. |
Lets see, American football players wear the most pads of any sport, and still sustain more major injuries than any other professional athletes.
I guess it doesn't take a genius to realize that the roughest sport is.
