Not sure I understand how it gets fucked from just having a full HDD?

I think the point is to use this as a portable way of bringing your MP3 around with you that already exist on your main home computer.

Transfering everything over to the portable and not keeping the main ones at home is just dumb...

If u have one of those HDD MP3 players and you DROP IT, you can be phucked! I know of someone who accidentally dropped one and not only did he lose EVERYTHING but, he dcouldn't run it. He couldn't even return it to the store because of an external scratch from when it landed on the concrete. I have an MP3-CD player (iRiver IMP-150 (ChromeX)) and I have to say that if you read on www.iRiver.com 's site, you'll see that there is no better way to keep a lot of music around you. Go to CDProjects or Case Logic's website and get one of their excellent CD cases and put a lot of MP3-CDs in them. You'll have many GB of music with u then! iRiver is the best MP3-CD and Flash player manufacturer. They're upgradeable too! If new features come out, just download the firmware update, burn it to CD, put it in the player, wait 2 min, that's it!

I own a Slim-X 350 and in the picture it's gotta be iMP - 500! The new one is out, 400 that is...So the newest 500 is yet to be revealed!

MP3 CD Players are the most convenient way to go, They have Car Stereo MP3 CD Players, Portable ones and now all DVD Players suport MP3 Playback, I have two of those Case Logic cases, one holds 72 which is currently full of MP3 CDs, And the second one thats holds over 80 has half of it full of MP3 CDs as well, Having a Mp3 CD Player is beneficial when having a party at home, You can just put in an MP3 CD which has say about 60 to 70 mp3 files on it and it will play all the track, And you dont have to worry about going to your system to change the CD again, That one whole CD can play up to 10 hours of music.

I'd go with the MP3/CD player myself...
Just makes more sense...

But for going to the gym or some outdoor exercise I'd get one that just played MP3 (all RAM sans HDD) for convenience and size. Then buy an arm strap or something to hold it there...
Now if they only made them to hold more songs...

Have you dropped you SLIMX yet? I wonder what would happen. I've dropped my iPod once and was pretty scared luckily i'm smart enough to keep it protected.

HD players are the way to go. Sure new CD players are small but nothing campared to the newest HD players. I can put about 1000 songs on it a never have to carry around extra CD's plus there is no worry about changing batteries.

Once more of these type of HD players come out on the market and for less $$ y'all will want one.

Actually 550. I just read about it in IGN.com's Gear section!! They're coming out with an HDD player and a home DVD player too now. I would just stick to CDs or flash when they get above 2 GB for the reasons I stated above.

Mine isn't a SlimX, SlimX is the IMP-350. I have the older IMP-150 ChromeX (I REALLY wish the '250 was sold in the US because it has the same features as the SlimX, including the 8 MB (8 min for 128 kbps MP3, 16 min for 64 kbps WMA) antiskip buffer) but, with the screen and all functions on the main unit, as well as the remote! Plus, it charges AA batteries, something I love about the '250 because I just got 4 NIMH 1600 mAh batteries and when I get the '250 from www.mp3players.co.uk (they ship worldwide now), I'll never have to take them out again. I like a screen and all functions on the main unit because what if the remote gets damaged? That's why I want everything on the main unit as well as the remote. On the '250, both screens (unit and remote) are backlit and with the newest firmware, u can set it so that the lights stay on all the time that the power is on.

I never dropped my '150 thanks to the "Case Logic CD player + 3 CDs case" that I have clipped to my dungarees (pants or jeans for the readers who don't know) every time I go out. I always have a MP3-CD in the player and 3 CDs in the case. It's fine for around a day's (24 hours) worth of music.

In the US, iRiver's coming out with a 512 MB model of their Flash player IN FEBRUARY 2003. Other places (like Europe, Australia, South America, etc.) should soon follow.

Now for the important (geekwise) questions:

* Will it play other types of digital media? (OGG, WAV, hell even WMA?)

* Is it firmware upgradeable?

ALL IRIVER PRODUCTS ARE FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE. They can currently play MP3, WMA, ASF, and standard (Red Book, NOT WAV FILES!) Audio CDs. They are trying real hard to come out with OGG for their products. There has been a HUGE amount of demand for it on their forum (I post there under "ali92") so, that should come very soon... http://www.iriver.com/ for more info on ALL of their products! New firmware is usually released once every month or so for ALL players.

The Archos Jukebox Multimedia 20

$31 more than the Ipod (only $380).

Holds 20 gigs of whatever. It plays .mp3s, .avis, and .jpgs using its Picture Viewer. It has a camera attachment that's only $20 that'll take pictures, too. It's got a nice, intuitive interface, a good anti-skip system in place, and rechargeable lithium batteries. Unfortunately, the unit only lasts 8 hours before needing a recharging, but its charger is small, so I usually just take it with me and plug it in somewhere if I need it.

The main thing is, I've dropped it not once but twice, once while I was standing, the other time while I was a good 12 ft. from the ground. Didn't affect the unit one bit.

You have to convert your .avis you want to play on it to the Simple Mpeg4 format, but it comes with a program that does it for you. I usually keep 3-5 DVD movies on there for watching. The 1x1 inch screen may seem kind of small, but you get used to it after a minute or two.

It's a pretty neat little device.
