Big difference man.

house and trance are entirely different beasts.

house is more grinding, bumpier, more jump and kick, use voice samping, uses more voice vocals.

you figure out the rest.

House is shit I hate it , its not very creative its plain and cheesy . but Trance music is surreal it puts you in a state like you are in another world when you listen to it its music that has a very strong image to it . to me its like fantasy music were things are created out of it and Trance has meaning ,emotion and a reason .

Progressive House.. well... I dunno how to describe it, since at times you see an ADD saying.. Certain DJ playing Prog. House.. or club saying playing Prog. House.. and to me is plain Trance, Prog. trance.. some say Prog. Trance is Prog. House.. just not to have the word TRANCE in it ( like Max Graham, sasha, and diwgeed say, they play prog.trance and some prog. house .. shame** )but well, the real prog. house, can be way to repetitive.. has no feeling ... may sound good at a club.. but cant compare it to the trance... for me is down there... some tunes are the exception thought.. those that do have that special thing.

maurice - feline and utah saints - lost vagueness (oliver lieb mix) and blaze - my beat (ambassador mix) and x-press 2 - Muzikizum (part 2) are excellent examples of progressive house.
but they can be played in so-called "trance" sets.

you cant just say a genre "sucks" (unless its HH ) because its all a matter of taste, i like all kinds of house but phats and small isnt house.
an awesome deep house-ish set is sasha - 2-27-00 essential mix

man that peak in the middle about one hour in.. its fucking amazing.

but i cant stand people who just say "i listen to good music, i dont care what its called"
they're just lazy and ignorant.
that DOESNT mean that every track has to have a genre, just TRY to know what you're listening to instead of calling everything with a beat techno or house, for fucks sake.

its quicker, very beat-based... no "cheesy" breakdowns, or any breakdowns for that matter.

chances are, if you can say "this song goes like this.. la dee dah"
its trance and not techno. USUALLY.
this is just a very generic way

but im very wrong in some specific cases, im sure someone will correct me

my ex gf loves jungle and DnB, so i was dragged to these junglist parties and shit, i kinda liked it though
