ok, if there's not contact then it was badly disallowed.

as i said to my friends, the french left a bit of their luck at the luz stadium. but it still was one hell of a game

and yes, england might have been robbed, but we were the ones that deserved to win.

and rooney's unfortunate injury made things easier for us. shame on that, i hope he recovers quickly, he's a great player with a great future in front of him.

Posted by RenderedDream on Jun-24-2004 23:05:

ahhh..i thank god (i don't believe in him god though) that rooney got out..he was my biggest fear

Portugal should thank their lucky stars. They don't deserve to win. England does. They beat them in 89th minute everybody saw it. You just don't want to admit that it was a bad call.

And the black armbands were to tight.

ball possession: 61% portugal - 39% england

Another England penalty shoot out, another England loss - some things dont change it seems...

Great game, loved it- full of action and drama, Portugal played well: kudos to them.

Maybe I am biased but I feel that Campbell goal was totally legitimate assuming the refereee thinks Campbell fouled someone (which he didnt). Even if he did call a foul on Terry that was a mistake as well. So I am assuming there was a foul somewhere else, perhaps when Owen made the initial header?

Anyways, that is no reason for England to sit back and defend a 1 goal lead the whole game like they did. And what the fuck was up with that penalty spot? Weird.

Strike 1, Rooney injury, Stike 2, Disallowed Goal, Strike 3, Beckham miss. You're out.

Err... sorry, wrong pic wrong time... first clue, figo is on the field, 2nd clue he's too pissed off to have just won a penalty shootout

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jun-25-2004 00:20:

Well mates...I'm still in tears. Robbed again, just like 98 on a beauty of a goal by Sol Campbell. That was NOT goalie interference...I think it's obvious that UEFA was favouring Portugal, as seen in the calls....disgusting.

I think Rooney coming out on injury was the worst thing that could have happened...now I hear his foot is broken. But...leave it to Beckham and James to ruin it for England again. I know Beckham is great, but he has played like shite this tournament and has cost us again....David James is an awful goalie, i'm sure of it now. Standing there on the tying goal and useless at penalties. Seaman would have saved two of those penalties, I'm sure of it.

Another heartbreaking loss for the Three Lions...I think 2006 may be our last decent shot for awhile, but I think reality has hit home very hard....we're just not that good.

man it was a great game , i cheered for england till the end (i was the only one amongst 9 people) calamity james should no longer play for england don't get me started with beckie and PKs

What about Paul Robinson? he played like a rock for Leeds that one season when they went to the semis of the Champ league but he hardly got called into the first team. Weird.

Although I am not English I love supporting England because they have so many faults about them, such an "underdog" aura evertime they play. Ever since I was a kid I loved the drama in their games and the fact they play with their heart on their sleeves.

It's too easy to support Brazil, France, blah blah...

well, nice to see you come around mate. It was a game for the ages, but I think most of know it should have ended in regulation. Sol's goal was fair...England always get the short end of the stick. Collini would not have made that call.

The linesman POINTED to the net for fuck's sake! ARGGGG...it's just so disheartening. But at least the fans didn't go on a rampage, or not just yet. On to WC 2006...where we'll fail again I'm sure. It's time for me to get drunk now.

What I saw was something we see week in & week out at league level & it's just part of the game, you can only give so much protection to the keepers before they become untouchable, he came for the ball * missed it and i really believe that Meier fucked up, I'd have said it either way, I know you'd be gutted if it happened for you, hell I was devastated at euro 2000 when u were screwed by the frogs, but I believe England should have had that goal stand, if we deserved it I can't say, but I see nothing majorly wrong in it

Posted by RenderedDream on Jun-25-2004 00:45:

i'm not a referee and don't know all the rules, but i saw an english guy jump above the goalkeeper and push him down, maybe that unabled him to reach the ball, it's the referee's call and bad or good decision, they have to be made

Posted by ricky on Jun-25-2004 01:12:

Wow- sounded like one hell of a game. I was rooting for you English too, but well.. hopefully WC will give the English the oppurtunity to have a rematch w/ Portugal. And... DAMN YOU BECKHAM

I wonder what ever happened to that Syrian guy who scored an own goal playing vs Japan in Asian Cup 1996.

I think that was their moment of glory and he scored in the 91st min or something to deny Syria a place in the next round.

Anyways, I am degressing, but yeah anything related to race isnt cool but i have a feeling he was refering to the Syrian soccer team.
