Tiesto has earned all the bashing I think because of his lack of effort but that is another thread for another time, if you want my actual opinion and reasoning behind it, pm me, if not just move on.
On tranceaddict, you will always have both sides of everything, that's why I like it because I hate to see just one side, that's dull and boring. You have people like me and mr.mystery who hold different opinions than most of the masses and we are hated at times because of it. Tranceaddict is a place where people converse on everything and the two sides really make it interesting, while we won't agree on everything, we do post here because we like EDM.

I have heard the album today and I must say there are some really nice tracks on it. Some of the new tracks really have got that 98/99 feeling to it. Also the 'Theme From Norefjell 2004' Remake is a good track, not all remakes pass the test but this one certainly does. It's only a shame that tracks like Traffic and Lethal Indusrty are on and also that Ancient History is a lame track with the Lethal Industry basics in it...

My review of the album (pasted from another forum)
---------------------------------------------
01. Heroes
I love the breakbeats in this, really solid & energetic once they get going. The kick on its own though sounds a bit weird (eg. at 3:20 after the strings kick in), I think the beats as a whole could have been structured better, but they sound cool. The string melody which carries the track from the break onwards is beautiful.. really emotive, but the actual synth used for it sounded pretty poor, almost like a Pro-53 string; far from the gorgeous rich orchestral strings Tiesto normally uses. The lead synth which comes in later doesn't add much either. This tune almost sounds like a rushed job altogether, which is a shame because the melody is stunning; would love to hear some remixes of this.
02. Breda 8pm (dj motana edit)
If Montana wasn't Tijs' best friend then no way would he be a known producer... he's brought nothing worthwhile to this tune at all. Just teched it up and rinsed it dry of the power & emotion it once had, and it doesn't work imho. There's no more energy to it than with the original & it doesn't go anywhere in comparison.
03. Ancient History
Quite a bizarre sounding track.. starts off very percussive & driving with a deep bassline, very techy feel to it... the synths sound weird though. The break has a very ethnic feel to it, with lots of conga solos & a panflute melody... obviously designed to fit with the world theme at the Olympics. That's basically it for the rest of the track; it's very simple overall, more of a set filler than a standout track.
04. Traffic
Shouldn't really need to review this one since everyone knows it now... I hated it at first but it's grown on me alot. Simple yet effective powerful tech-trance.
05. Euphoria
The mix into this is absolutely shocking! I could've probably done better... blindfolded & using only one hand
... anyway as the title suggests this is alot softer than the previous tracks, fairly light, floaty pseudo-classical trance. It's nothing really new but it's alright, the chord changes, melody & string elements all work well together. Almost reminds me of the old Magik-style Tiesto, which isn't a bad thing
...doesn't really reach a huge peak but I like it & would probably play it.
06. Athena
Another melodic trance piece... the buildup is alot more subtle & driving than with 'Euphoria' though, and during the break the melody kicks in with greater effect. It's based around a classical piece a la Adagio... I recognise it but can't put a name to it. The strings sound pretty cool here, with an orchestral flavour to them. When the track kicks back in it's pretty generic as far as classical-gone trance tunes go, with an offbeat synth playing out the melody, but it works really well all the same and sounds very anthemic. I prefer it to his remake of Adagio.
07. Olympic Flame
He brings the beat in FAR too early on this tune & it's not even on time... verging on trainwreck standard :-/ ...ruins the track before it. The kick & bass combination used sounds very similar to Rah - Pole Position. It starts off pretty well, up until the breakdown it remains subtle & emotive with the chords frequently changing, typical Tiesto style. The break sounds awesome when it first kicks in, with some really amazing sounding pads... proper float-away material. Unfortunately though it doesn't last for too long and the track kinda goes downhill from there, with lots of piercing stabby synths making up the main melody, and they don't seem to gel together well. Another case of spoilt potential really since the build & break show some since of a really awesome track in the making... but the peak doesn't really carry on the flame (sorry
) like it should. Sounds like it would be huge when played out though.
08. Lethal Industry
See review for Traffic :P ...surprised this was included in a way since it doesn't really fit with the mood of the album... then again neither did Traffic really.
09. Coming Home
This is a remake of DJ Jan & Christophe Chantiz's remix of Theme from Norjefell... understandable why it was done since the original was kinda simplistic sounding (not in a good way). This version feels kinda chaotic & badly produced though, with too many noisy weird sounding synths & dodgy perc without any string elements to compliment them.. argh, sorry don't like it at all, 2nd worst track on the album (after 11)
10. Adagio for Strings
Like Traffic I didn't like this at first... it's a very live-orientated track, sounds quite bare when listening on home headphones but goes off like a bomb when played out. Every time I hear that breakdown, memories of thousands of screaming clubbers with their hands in the air from GKGG this year just come flooding back & send shivers up my spine. I probably wouldn't be a fan of this if I didn't have such memories to attach it to though.
11. Victorious
Sounds erm... different
...still in the melodic trance vein but very experimentally done... I think. When it all comes together it sounds kinda cheesy; not because of the melody but because of the overall groove... it's weird. Meh, it actually gets increasingly more irriating each time I go back & listen to it... doesn't sound like it'd fit in with Tiesto's sets at all. Anyone's sets for that matter. Really don't know what he was thinking of when he made this & hope he doesn't follow this sound.
12. Forever Today
It got mixed opinions when posted about on here but I still like it. Not his best work to date but it is *nice*, and makes a pleasant finish after the monstrosity of the penultimate track.
All in all I'm pretty disappointed... and I'm normally biased in favour of Tiesto if anything. I'm still thinking of buying the vinyl but it'll only really be for Euphoria and Athena... possibly Ancient History. The rest of the new tunes are either wasted potential (Heroes, Olympic Flame), pointless remakes (Breda, Coming Home) or just plain nasty (Victorious).
i can see u make ur bed and sleep in it firmly into trance territory
For me Montana's Edit from Breda 8PM, Coming Home and Victorious save this album's arse from being just the same as everyone's elses. Shame that everyone like you who likes their trance fluffy as shit will hate this album.
Fortunately some of us have ALWAYS been with tiesto - and don't just associate him with Silence or the 98-99 sound he became famous for.
Some of the tracks here are taking me back to 1995 and 1996 in their simplicity and also their techy structure. Which is exactly what i would've hoped for seeing as epic and euphoric trance is being dug a slow grave by mr. *it worked in 2000 so why not now-style?* van buuren
At least we agree.. Heroes is a good track
Apart from the one's i argued for here... its my pick on the album. Something which (altho 2003 was the year everyone put breaks in their tracks...) stands out as an original piece from Tiesto.
Euphoria and Athena are just too much like everything else to say they stand out. To me, those tracks let the album down. It shows just how rushed the album was. Its Tiesto - but playing Euphoria and Athena you can see he didn't have much time to put his own influence on the genre like usual.

| Originally posted by isoterra I can see how you made an assumption on my tastes after that review... but I have to say it is innacurate. I'm getting less and less into uplifting trance as well, there aren't nearly as many tunes in that territory which do it for me today as there were last year or previously, and I'm not a big fan of Armin. I'm getting more into the harder, edgier tech-trance style and love the material in that vein which Tiesto normally plays (Flight 643 is one of his best tunes imo). I'm starting to incorporate most of my vinyl purchases around that sound. With this album, by no means do I think he should have aimed only for the fluffy uplifting trance market, and admire that he's attempting something different. However I believe that whilst Athena and Euphoria aren't the most adventurous and original pieces on there, they're executed better than the ones you mentioned, with overall better production & better transitions between stages throughout the structure. I did try to express my reasons clearly in the review but shall reiterate on the three tracks you stated preference for: Breda 8pm - I liked the overall style of the track; my main gripe was that it didn't offer much difference from the original Dallas 4pm, and what it DID change didn't do it any favours. Had I not heard Dallas 4pm previously then I may have enjoyed it. Coming Home - I found this to be quite badly produced and messy with a weak groove; again, the style of the track could have worked but I hated the execution. Given a decent re-work with more emphasis on the lower-end and less cluttered sounds, I think it could be a blinder. Victorious - Well, to each his own. This was certainly a very different & unique track, and if that's what you're after then fair enough, but thought it sounded dire. Hats off for experimenting and steering away from traditional sounds but I just think on this occasion he's failed to do it effectively. Saying that I did like the sound of the break, it's when it kicks back in that it starts torturing my ears. ![]() Whilst I'll admit to not knowing of Tiesto prior to 1999, I've since checked out several of the early Magik/Space Age/Forbidden Paradise mixes and enjoyed them, so can see where you're coming from, and yes, I can pick out occasional elements/inspirations from that period in his modern material... which I appreciate. I can't stand it when people bash Tiesto for being formulaic and following trance by numbers since they really don't have a clue what they're talking about... he's one of the few big trance producers around that DOES attempt to innovate and always has a distinctive aspect to his work. Still... thanks for writing a constructive reply to my review all the same |
