DJ Mark V - Score Explanations
Competition 5
Opponent 1
Track Selection and Play Order:
One word --- Superb. The track selection was amazing; you had some really great tunes in there. The play order was chiseled to perfection.
Score: 24
Beat Matching:
Incredible beat matching skills, you are well above adequate, keep doing what youre doing because it bought you points for this competition.
Score: 25
Transition Harmonics:
Transition 1: What can I say about this transition besides, absolutely beautiful That was a very professional sounding transition; you brought in the sounds and made a great long stretching transition and hit the vocals perfectly.
Transition 2: Yet another beautiful transition here. The cymbals clicked great with the track you mixed into. The deep bass and the kick matched the flow flawlessly; and again, the vocals were perfectly placed, great job.
Transition 3: Nice long transitional phase here, I really enjoyed that. The electric guitar strings from the previous track you mixed out of and the drums of the transitional track harmonized to precision. This was another professional quality transition.
Transition 4: Great transition, for the average listener, to pick up on that would be tough. It was a very nice flow into the transitional track.
Transition 5: Another unnoticeable transition to the average listener, I barely picked up on in myself and I was listening closely, quite intriguing if you ask me.
Overall Transition Harmonic Overview:
The definition of harmonic is:
Pleasing to the ear: harmonic orchestral effects.
With that in mind, I feel that this is a professional quality mix, theres no other real explanation. You did exactly what a DJ is supposed to do, entertain the listener!
Where to Improve: The one thing Ill tell you to do is this. Find an internet radio station and apply for a residence, put your skills to work! Great mix set.
Score: 24

Track Selection and Play Order:
The track selection was decent and the play order went alright, I feel that perhaps you could have chosen songs that fit better with each other rather than forcing them together.
Score: 20
Beat Matching:
An ever improving field is this one, just practice and youll be able to find small techniques of your own that will help you to master the challenge of beat matching.
Score: 21
Transition Harmonics:
Transition 1: I had to wait for the entire transition to figure out the effect you were aiming for. To me, it felt like you track faded out and the other forced its way in. The beat matching was alright, it needed to flow better and contain more melody, or otherwise it wouldnt be an issue.
Transition 2: Not a bad transition at all, the vocals hit perfectly and your stings came in pretty well; however the kicks on your beats along with the bass at certain points faded out a bit. But decent transition nonetheless
Transition 3: You brought in the transitional track a pretty decent mix point; I thought that was a good improvement on the last two. One thing you might consider is having there be more action while transitioning, if youre going to the beats kicking, make them exciting or at least melodic, add some melody to it by bringing in some strings.
Transition 4: One thing you have to be careful about, is knowing the difference between matching melodies and matching sounds. The sounds matched, but the melodies of the two tracks didnt so much, and thats why you were forced to cut this transition short. But I noticed the effort put into improving that on this transition. Good improvement.
Transition 5: The cymbals went perfectly with that track! You should have brought them in earlier! The melodies even swayed decently together, bring in your transitional track earlier is all I can tell you.
Overall Transition Harmonic Overview:
The definition of harmonic is:
Pleasing to the ear: harmonic orchestral effects.
With that in mind, I thought the mix went alright, wasnt bad, but didnt live up to the potential it had. Beat matching is key, you did fairly well, but fighting that with good track selection will help the situation.
Where to Improve: I feel that there can be improvement on making wiser decisions of tracks being played and bringing in the transitional phase earlier rather than later.
Score: 20
Thanks for the Judging guys, i cut 6 tracks out of a trance promo i did a few mounths ago cause i ran out of time! Def going do a new mix for the next challenge because the comp is tough, cheers for the detailed breakdown!

mark v -- another beautiful, clear, concise bit of feedback. thank you so much for your words. i really enjoyed throwing that mix down. not bad for a one shot deal. i figured if we were doing a 'live' competition it should simulate 'live'ness.
oh, and how does one go about applying for a radio residency? all new stuff to me

Here You can also submitt Your Demos.
http://www.di.fm/submissions.php
Good Luck
oh yeah, and thanks for your positive words... they were music to the ears of someone who, until recently, was thinking about hanging it up
Kris - Thanks for your appreciation of the comments, I appreciate it! lol
And about applying for the residency, the thing to do is contact the station manager directly through email and let him know you're interested in becoming a DJ for his station. Tell him a little bit about yourself (i.e. who you are, your DJ name, how long you've been DJing, what genre do you spin, etc.)
Then if he'she considers you, they give you information on on how to submit your demo mixset to them. If they like it they may give you a chance to guest DJ on their station, if they love it they may want you as a resident DJ on their station!
So give it a try, look around at a few stations that look good and/or that look somewhat promising to pick you up and just start to get into contact with those people, that's the best way.
