I remember reading an interview with Mauro Picotto years ago in which when asked why he had shifted his style to techno, he replied something to the effect of:
I am playing techno now because I feel that the quality of the productions at the moment is high, but I will never play any one style forever.

I will be the first to admit that techno productions have suffered in recent years and most of the new releases I have heard are far from innovative, but I do get a bit annoyed when I hear/read that certain techno djs cite the fact that they have shifted their style in large part because they think the current techno releases arent especially interesting. People change their taste and inspirations all the time so I cant fault anybody for that, but sadly I rarely hear of a leading techno dj (they are basically all producers these days now too) truly trying to actually do something about it to help the cause (for lack of a better expression)! Instead they seem to focus their production efforts elsewhere.
Im personally not bored with the releases Ive been buying but if shifting your style is simply a matter of the production value being weaker these days, then I have to wonder a bit why more techno DJs (like Cave) arent trying to develop their own Live PA or something, which I think could be a good creative challenge!

As we all know though, everything happens in cycles.. there will always be a place for minimal, as well as techno and it seems like we are experiencing a bit of changing of the guard, with many of the older jocks shifting styles, and new ones emerging to take their places! I definitely think either way it will be an interesting period for techno in the coming years.

I don't believe many of these DJs "switching" have strictly been interested in hard techno for the duration of their careers until now. Many of them have exposed their "softer side" here and there over the years and now there is more of a market for that sound, it is the perfect time to develop that sound as a DJ or as a producer.

I don't believe very many of them are focusing their production efforts elsewhere simply because the trend is now to play electro or minimal or house or whatever - I think it's because it presents a great development opportunity for them as artists.

I get the impression now that the "cause" is not limited to one sound, in fact I think it's the exact opposite - the inclusion of all sorts of music.

I enjoy a good showman/woman behind the decks. For me, it just ads to the vibe so much more. I like to be cutting a rug, and take a peek up at the DJ every once in a while... keeps me on the right wave length I need to be at for the duration of the set.

For sure, he's a super fun guy to go see and even more cool to hang with. He's a weed head for sure, and he looks hillarious when he laughs. I'll have to post some of the pics from the last show he played with Speedy in Detroit. Killer show and hilarious pics!

I guess as with most EDM genres, it takes some getting used to.

Although I did really enjoy Alex Smoke's EM from a little while ago. Fun stuff.

Either the music grows on you (like it much at first, everything about it) or you grow on the music (trends, scene, etc.)

I was reading an interview with Chris McCormack and how he quit the whole scene becasue of wannabe producers making the same beats, using the same samples and sounds all over again and just flooding out releases every week even though they were mostly crappy productions. (I think he was aiming at guys like Hertz). Anyways he was right to some extent but there is still ALOT of good techno out there (hard)..just got to find it and make connections.

Oh I agree... I still enjoy the techno (on the harder side) that is being produced these days, that's why it still accounts for most of my vinyl purchases

as for Hertz - what do you expect from a guy who in the early 90's produced cheesy dance tracks under the name Dr Alban or something.. hehe

But in all seriousness.. the best Hertz material I have heard recently has been remixes of his tracks done by others.. guys like Dj Murphy, Darren Kay... Hertz is a good producer though, and dj, but at one point especially there were just too many releases coming out... sort of like Danilo Vigorito a few years back! Should always be about quality, not quantity.

I think its a bit of both.

for me it usually starts with one wicked tune or dj mix, then I go searching for ones similar to it, and the next thing you know, you're loving the entire genre.

genres such as DnB, Minimal, and Hardcore are generally very hard to get into since they push the boundries and go to extremes, and at first taste most people find it to be too drastic a change from what they normally listen to. Therefore they dislike it without giving it a second chance.

It has happened to me several times with many genres, but as time progressed and I got more comfortable with EDM, I began to explore.

Thank you Kate

I have been keeping my eyes open for these!!!

They got added very recently on Livesets... I am still anxiously waiting for Cari's set though.. especially given his timeslot... I am sure it is nice and hard - by his standards

the Awakenings site doesn't have them up yet though!

unrelated but since I just posted the Beyer link - he is celebrating Drumcode's 10th anniversary next month at the End in London alongside Joel Mull... and also his 30th bday!! daaaamn... I knew he started young but I would have guessed he was maybe 33 now... not 20 when he established arguably one of the most influential techno labels ever!

The people overseas are very spoiled with techno I tell ya!
I can't wait to be one of those people

Funny...when I saw the pics of Beyer from awakenings on Friday I thought he looked older than I remembered him looking...interesting that he's younger than Barbara (but barely)!

I am reeeeally looking forward to Laurent Garnier at the end of the month...it feels like a long time since I've heard some techno.

Beyer also shares the same birthday (and year!) as Umek and they are the same height.. heheh

For sure I thought Beyer was a few years older as well... he accomplished so much at such a young age!

DEMF news

Well it looks like I can't make it to DEMF this year...but here's some news of the talent being booked. A lot of Mutek artists, no surprise there tho.

Chrysler Jeep Superstores and Motor City Dodge Dealers Back Detroits Electronic Music Festival; Paxahau Promotions debuts artist lineup and confirms Hart Plaza as Festivals home

DETROIT- Just three weeks following their selection by the City of Detroit to produce Detroits Electronic Music Festival in 2006, Paxahau Promotions Group today announced Chrysler Jeep Superstores and Motor City Dodge Dealers as the events title sponsors, revealed a lineup of artists and confirmed that Hart Plaza will remain home to the international event slated for May 27-29.

Our entire team has been working tirelessly to create a festival that truly represents and celebrates electronic music, and at the same time is a financially sound and viable event, said Jason Huvaere, Paxahaus Managing Director.

We are thrilled to have Chrysler Jeep Superstores and Motor City Dodge Dealers on board as our title sponsors, said Huvaere. They understand that the festival is part of the cultural fabric of Detroit, and they see its significance internationally and within the electronic music community. We look forward to a longstanding relationship with these organizations.

City of Detroit Chief Administrative Officer Lucius Vassar commended Chrysler Jeep Superstores and Motor City Dodge Dealers for their support of the event, saying Its good to see these two business associations that are a part of Detroits automotive heritage partnering with an event that has emerged from our citys rich music and cultural heritage.

I commend Chrysler Jeep Superstores and Motor City Dodge Dealers for recognizing the value an event like Detroits Electronic Music Festival adds to the cultural and tourism development of a city. With these types of partnerships in place, I expect the event to flourish and continue to draw people from all over the world here to Detroit, said Vassar.

After carefully examining several festival venue options, Paxahau today announced the 2006 event will remain in Downtown Detroits Hart Plaza. We considered several venue options in order to really determine the best location for the event, for fans, and for the City of Detroit, said Huvaere. When it comes to infrastructure and ambience, its tough to beat Hart Plaza.
