Re: Irregular Refs

personally i think they use the word 'irregular' as synonymous with 'inconsistent' plus wacky lol... ie..when you combine some or all of the following, which is what the ref today did:

1> refs that make proper calls when needed,
(ie red card to pope, red card to de rossi.)
2> refs that make completely distorted/exaggerated and/or wrong calls (giving a foul when it was obviously just a swan-dive antic)
3> refs failing to make proper calls all (shirt grabbing by american player, no yellow card given; italy handball, no foul called.)

committing to the call, omitting the call, and fabricating the call lol.

can't think of anything else right now but it's a start.

I'm rooting for them to move on given their play in the two games. This game made me really hate Italian football, stay on your feet and play like men, they're a talented side but too much prettyboys who roll over when touched, the Czechs looked lost without Koller. The Ghanians are in the best form right now and should advance if the Italians and Czechs don't give it all and end up tied, I hope so their rewards would be Brazil.

Well after watching todays games I think Ghana will give Brazil more of a challenge then the Italians and Czechs.Ivory Coast was to me the best african team in this world cup, they put the ball on the ground and played football. The Czechs today were doing nothing but long balls all day that ended up in nothing.I really thought Italy was going to kick the US's ass but I was wrong and now I have doubts about how well they can do in the knockout stage in where they might not even make it.We shall see

Arena praises his nine men
22:56, Sat 17 Jun 2006

By Martyn Herman

KAISERSLAUTERN, June 17 (Reuters) - U.S. coach Bruce Arena praised his team for gaining a World Cup point on Saturday after playing most of the second half with nine men against Italy, who themselves had a player sent off.

"Two red cards in the spread of five minutes is pretty harsh and I respect the team for the way they dealt with it," he told reporters after the 1-1 draw in Group E.
"There is no way you can train a team to play 10 against nine for 30-something minutes" - Arena

"There is no way you can train a team to play 10 against nine for 30-something minutes. A lot of teams would use it as an excuse for losing on the day," added Arena.

"We are where we wanted to be going into the third round of matches, perhaps four points will be enough to get out of this group."

Arena condemned Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi for elbowing Brian McBride. De Rossi was sent off in the 28th minute for the foul.

"It was a vicious elbow and it could have broken his face," Arena told reporters. McBride needed three stitches to stem bleeding under his left eye.

"Once the first red card was shown, sometimes you get the feeling that things will be evened up, but it came pretty quickly."

LIPPI'S VIEW

Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda showed U.S. midfielder Pablo Mastroeni a straight red card for a late tackle in the 45th minute and team mate Eddie Pope was dismissed two minutes after halftime for his second yellow card.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi had little sympathy for De Rossi.

"I'm sorry because he's a really good kid but he's made the umpteenth stupid mistake," he told Italy's RAI TV. (lol.)

Lippi criticised his team.

"I'm disappointed and angry. We didn't go into this match in the right frame of mind and we paid for that with the nervous way we played and with the mistakes we made," he said.

"We were unlucky when the ball bounced off (Cristian) Zaccardo to bring them level and then we didn't know how to take advantage of our numerical superiority later in the game."

The Americans lost their first game 3-0 to the Czech Republic. Italy beat Ghana 2-0 in their opening match.

"We weren't brilliant. It just goes to show how you've got to keep your feet on the ground, even after winning your first match," said Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

At least it keeps one group alive out of the lot where two games have already been played, think Trinidad is the only other team that still has a shot, other than Group E right now. I'm intrigued to see that Czech - Italian game to see how both sides approach it. A draw could knock out one of the two teams as well as a loss, so it will be nailbiting for those fans. I just think that Ghana has played too hard to let this slip away from them. When you think about it they control their destiny, win and they advance no matter what the Italians and Czechs do.

Im hoping that without two of their main guns, Ghana won't bite so hard

Hey Goku is it just me or do you not get frustrated watching the slow, methodical buildup that the U.S. employs, they rarely seem to make the long runs up the field on counters. Maybe it's just me but it just frustrates me to watch how they allow all of the other teams players to get back behind the ball.

I'm just glad I don't have to watch Eddie Pope, ewww. He looks like trash in this tournament. His stamina, pace and marking on the backline seems to be left somewhere in his early years in the MLS. In situations like which the U.S. is in now they need everything to go right for them, they win and the Italians win. Could happen but at any rate makes the last day interesting however things go.

Sure it does but without Reyna in the lineup (which is a plus) and without ONYEWU and without MASTROENI which will not play in the final game because of the yellow cards dealt previously and the red card obviously, I see a quicker US team. We obviously lose a good defender in Onyewu but I wouldn't scratch off the Us team just yet by the performance that ghana put up against the czech republic. The czech republic was missing their big man in koller who basically made the team gel together imo. For USA with Wolf, Johnson and Obrien, I see a faster group with more energy in the next game. It needs to feed on energy and energy plays. Reyna with all due respect, I feel he hinders this and it will be an interesting final game with Ghana suffering without their two main gunners. Donovan and Beasely will have to eat their Frosted Flakes as well...

Posted by NYCTrancefan on Jun-17-2006 22:54:

Onweyu is out didn't know he was, sure about that. I feel the U.S. will have to jump on Ghana early because the longer the game goes on a result will be harder to get, I agree though Ghana has two players out, I don't care that Pope and Reyna is out, the former is washed up from what I have seen in this tournament and Reyna is an outright disappointment so far. I agree Obrien will be in there, but who plays back on defence.

I wouldnt want to speculate on that since bruce arena has been known to change lineups like underwear. still wondering why johnson wasn't put in for mcbride in the final 20minutes . Im still wondering why he wasn't even started....all this speculation just makes the final game pretty interesting

i was wondering the same thing about johnson. i thought for sure he would bring him into the game to team up with beasley.

im not sure why you think reyna is out for next game. as i said earlier in the thread he didnt get a yellow card nor a red card in this game.

Yeah, the only guys out checking the Fifa website is Pope and Mastroeni for next game, Reyna needs to play the game of his life in this next game after two less than impressive ones.

Kap!Members!Vern!Jonze!any other faithfull non assholish USA fan! High 5!! We did it lol!

OMG had a great USA vs Italy party at my crib and to see them tie !

Italy was one of my fave teams, and their performance today really let me down, di Rossi should be suspended the rest of the cup for that elbow. All calls seemed just, the Mastreoni call was a bit harsh but I think rules nowadays say thats a red so whatever.

So much went against the U.S and for them to grind it out like this was awesome.Dirty ass game, who said football (soccer) was soft haha.We messed up those Italians hair and they got pissed . Seriously though after the own goal they lost it, which was pretty gay in their part.

The USA red cards (gotta admit they just tackled way to late in both plays, nothing purposely dirty) are a down for the next match considering it was 2 defenders so that sucks. But I hope USA got some new respect around the world after this match, they deserve it.

I've seen lose spelled loose for the millionth time. It irritates. Here are examples of correct usage: He tends to lose his keys. She lets her dog run loose. Thanks carry on.

I'm proud my country was able to draw while fighting with a man down. An Italy win and a U.S. win..... at least there's a glimmer of hope although I won't hold my breath. Ghana looks tough and very quick. Plus they got the momentum.

Italians are pansies. I don't watch Serie A as much, I prefer the EPL but I catch them in champions league. Man, every single time the U.S. defender was within any kind of distance they were falling. Sorry, I just don't respect that shit. Then wallah, 15 seconds later they are running wild again. Lame!
