There's nothing wrong with making an EM of your tunes, if they're good.
... pretty big if.
Believe it or not I'd have no problems with someone making an EM from all their own tunes as long as its done as a proper live set rather than dj mix. the art of playing live is so much more than the art of mixing all your own tunes in live with a midi controller.
Oliver lieb showed us the way with that mix he put on his myspace a while back. Also hardfloor do a mean live set. Just putting some idea out there in the off chance pete tong is reading this thread.
i was looking at the comments posted on the bbc1 website and saw this one. had to laugh

EM has been garbage for yrs now.
I would've liked the mix a bit better if he played the original version of faxing berlin though.

On a brighter note, I have to admit that this thread got me listening to Deadmau5's vinyl releases that came out in June. The newer BSOD release has a great track on it
just heard it and thought its ok,
the best part though is the piano part, the bit just after Arguru.
personally id have liked to see some tracks by other artists. its physically impossible that at the point of mixing a dj set the only tracks you want to include have to be in some way worked on by yourself. even if there were still half the tracks from you, and half from other artists it would have been a more interesting tracklist, i mean im sure you receive 20 exclusive tunes that are worth playing a week. i havnt listened to the em but from what i see, there is no story/journey in the mix. I imagine each track will have exactly the same kickdrum and bassline synth, with the same mix ratio to all the percussive elements. to a d5 obsessive fan, the set will be a godsend i imagine.
problem that successful artists face nowadays is the internet forum phenomenon. its not that anyones opinions matter on TA, because most of the moaners dont go out to gigs and dont show an accurate representation of what the majority of musical lovers feel. however, hidden behind the computer screen, a 16-17yr old forum user might be mistaken for someone who actually lives a real life and does more than just browse TA and wank while awaiting a response to their last post. Just about every big artist keeps tabs on what forum users are saying, but really they should ignore forums because most people on forums are not acting/thinking how they would act in the real world..

| Originally posted by nefardec deadmau5, you're a producer, and you were given the slot by tong. why not treat the whole EM as one big, composed, production, instead of a DJ set. The reviews all seem to indicate that this isn't your thing, yet your sales and the hype on your live show indicates you're a monster producer, regardless of one's philosophy on music. It seems given the opportunity you might have done something more ambitious, but I'm sure it will work out for you either way... But why don't you take music seriously? What matters to you? Is there anything you DO take seriously? When you're irrelevant do you want to be remembered as the guy with the red suit and mousehead that made all those disposable eighth note tracks in the first decade of the milliennium? |
He's using it to make a pile of money while having fun.
Is that a great contribution to EDM? No. But most people with a brain would do the same.

| Originally posted by isoterra both of these are bullshit and as bad as each other, lets be realistic. falsely lumping an artist's entire fanbase (or anti-fanbase) into one category in an attempt to belittle someone's opinion is a pathetically cheap attempt at gaining the upper hand in a discussion about music |
