This is almost exactly the kind of set I had in mind when I started this game, albeit quirkier than most. Apart from that Boney M track I enjoyed just about all of it, and there were a lot of interesting and varied tracks that worked well together. It's just a shame the opening up to The Prodigy feels like a completely different tape to everything that comes after.

In.... although Brian Wilson did not try and one up the Brits...he just ripped off Chuck Berry. (and later on made Berry rich when he lost the copyright infringement case)

Actually the stress and pressure that Brian put on himself to compete and write better pop songs than the Beatles was a very large contribution to his breakdown.
Although you're right about Surfin USA being ripped from Sweet Little 16, Brian's other work clearly places in him in another league to Berry in terms of musical arrangement. If you don't own Pet Sounds or Smile, do yourself a favour and get them.

Thanks for all the koods. I knew I wouldn't be able to get away with doing the kind of set we've seen Nef' or Jupiter do -I ain't no real DJ.

Hence why I decided to do a fun one rather than seriously show off other personal classics, with a bunch of quirky, unexpected twists and turns. Heh, this would probably be the kind of set I'd actually try to play out if I ever got the opportunity to. Maybe one day I'll be able to pull it off more fluidly like Z-Trip or 2 Many DJs.

Sorry this is a day late. This crazy 28 day month threw my shit off. For the next couple of months I'll be inviting a few less high-profile TA DJs to shake the game up, but for March we've got a veritable Los Angeles superstar, star of many a TA meme. It's obviously...

01. Genesis - Mama
Genesis is one of my all time favorite bands, and Phil Collins is the sole reason I started drumming. I find him amazing, and his music fucking incredible. The synths in this are eerie and gorgeous, and that big ol 808 never gets old.

02. Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin'
Sampled to make Warren G and Nate Dogg's masterful Regulate, Michael McDonald was deemed the funkiest old white man alive.

03. Carly Simon - Why? - Vocal 12"
A cover version was done by some Dutch (?) popstar that sort of revamped my love for this song. Produced by Edwards and Rodgers of Chic fame, this song is one of the few hits she had after some major breakdown she suffered in 1980. Apparently there's a version performed by Chic themselves on a b-side, but I've never heard it.

04. Banbarra - Shack Up
For a song with such a simple bass riff & drum beat this is one of my favorites, I absolutely love that drum break. Plus the lyrics are hilarious.


05. Brass Construction - Movin'
Later sampled to make The Bucketheads' Got Myself Together (one of my favorite Bucketheads songs), the original version is 8 mins of funk and disco that can tend to go a little long, but again...I enjoy it.


06. Geraldine Hunt - Can't Fake The Feeling
She's one of my favorite singers from the disco era. Her, Sharon Brown and Sharon Redd. Love the divas.


07. The Break Boys - And The Break Goes On - Hip Hop Mix
Found this one on a History of Chicago House compilation some years back. The samples in here are fun without, imo, being too over the top. Even sampled some Marshall Jefferson.

08. Fast Eddie - Hip House
It wasn't too long ago that hip hop and house shared the same roots and had the same sound, this song began my obsession with hip house. It's too bad there weren't more innovative producers around. You'll notice almost everyone used the same samples

09. Tyree - Let The Music Take Control
The master of hip house himself, Tyree Cooper in the house. Absolutely in love with this track, the piano is jacked.

10. Fast Eddie - Yo Yo Get Funky
Another one from Fast Eddie, he was definitely one of my faves in the hip house scene. DJ International in the house!

11. Adonis - No Way Back
Definitive electro track of it's time, still has staying power today.

12. Company B - Fascinated
Not sure what the era for this kind of music was called, I think it was aquanet or something? This sort of blend of pop and electro was huge in Miami in the mid - late 80s. Don't think it ever caught on all over the east & west coasts.

13. Happy Mondays - Hallelujah - Club Mix
The first time I ever heard of Andrew Weatherall was through this track. The Happy Mondays were one of the many fantastic bands to come out of the Madchester era of clubbing in Manchester (along with Joy Division, New Order, Stone Roses, The Shamen etc). Tony Wilson was a pioneer and the music world wouldn't be what it is today without him.

14. The Cure - Lullaby
Who doesn't like this song?

15. Underworld - Dirty Epic
Underworld is by far the greatest electronic group in history. I own everything they've ever done and they remain a huge inspiration to me. Karl's voice is spectacular.

16. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
THE band of Madchester era, and responsible for getting The Hacienda and Factory Records out to the rest of the world. They're my favorite band of all time, and they were gone before I was even born. To this day my biggest wish is to have been born at least a decade earlier so I could at least pretend to have seen them at some point in life.

Mixing is fucked in some places, apparently live drummer disco IS difficult to mix

Another note, these mixes are pretty difficult to put together. How does one fit 18+ years of musical inspiration into an 80 minute mix? There was so much more I could have included and didn't know what/how to trim stuff out. Much respect for everyone else's efforts, they're all diverse and very well put together and I'm proud to be a part of it
