Posted by Schadenfreude on Feb-02-2010 04:59:

believe it or not Quebec will be back in the Nhl sometime in the next 5 years...our money is worth something now, and there are too many US teams in the sunbelt losing money.

oy I love to hate this team!

Posted by Romchik22 on Feb-02-2010 16:56:

Trading Markov = suicide.

Posted by Romchik22 on Feb-02-2010 16:57:

Also, Markov will stay in Montreal and wants to become captain. I have "inside" sources :P. He'll become this summer when he'll sign a 7 year deal with the habs for the rest of his carrer. He loves Montreal.

The Molson Brothers said last week that they are firmly behind Gainey. Don't forget that he is also Executive Vice President of the team.

I think his contract might be up though in terms of gm this year...maybe if we are lucky he will step down from that position. The Habs are enjoying almost record profits (I'll find the forbes article later on this), so even if the team sucks hard, they don't listen to the media because:

1. The Montreal media is comprised of lunatics, especially on the French side.

2.Full seats + tons of people willing to buy 10$ Molson M's = it does not matter.

3.RDS has big time ratings and they pay more than any other TV station in the NHL to broadcast games. In the states they practically give away rights...I believe Rds pays 35 million a year to the team which is pretty crazy.

Until fans show they are pissed with their wallets, nothing will happen i think. There is almost a 5 year waiting list for season tickets (and you pay every year to be on it), so even if the team sucks people will keep buying them.

The loges are at 95% capacity rented, the other 5% gets rented on a game per game basis.

Listening to your fans as a sports franchise only becomes important when they are not there.

it sucks.

ps trading markov = the only only option to get great draft picks or young players.

once again he is 31 years old, and if you think that we have a chance to win a cup in his prime with this team, you don't know hockey. He is a great player for sure, that is why he will fetch the most.

Suicide? The team is already dead.

Posted by Romchik22 on Feb-02-2010 17:20:

Instead of trading Markov...
We can trade : Dagostini, Pacioretty, Price or Halak, Sergei Kostytin, Weber...

MY DREAM, is to get Kovalchuk if he's on the trade market. Even if we lose, it's fun to have one of the biggest superstar in your team.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Feb-02-2010 17:29:

dagostini = 3rd round pick tops..i don't know if you watch the games, but he is awful. He would be a 3rd or 4th line player on any team....if he could make it. He is an rfa so any team that wants him can just wait and sign him to an offer sheet at the end of the year.

Paciorety = awful. He had his chance and blew it. 2nd rounder tops. Also not anything better than a career 3rd liner. Trevor Timmins dropped the ball.

Price = still has value

Halak = its there but less

Sergei Kostitsyn = he has 1 goal and 3 assists in 23 games + he has publicly acted like an ass and proven to be cancer in the dressing room. He is young, but no one is going to give him any value. 2nd round pick at most.

Weber = hasn't played enough in the nhl to get anything of value.

Now package Markov + Price and you can get a young star + 2 1st round picks.

Trade for Kovalchuk? First off we don't have what Atlanta wants. 2nd, why are the habs going to trade half of the team to get a player when they are not going to make the playoffs and he is a free agent who won't sign with them at the end of the year? Also it won't work because of the salary cap. You listen to too much trance man...makes no sense at all.

that is NFL level money

Posted by Schadenfreude on Feb-02-2010 17:38:

CDN Dollars

and i might be wrong....i am looking now. It is what i think i heard them say on L'Antichambre.

I do know it is the highest in the NHL.

Posted by Spin Laden on Feb-02-2010 17:48:

I wouldn't be surprised though. I believe Toronto and the Rangers have some nice revenue streams from television as well.

NFL is in a league of its own but I can't research the numbers since we have slow speed internet at work.

Posted by Romchik22 on Feb-02-2010 17:50:

Is there any f*ing way to get rid of Gomez and Gionta. The two of them are going to kill our salary cap.
We have barely any $$ under our salary cap. I have no idea on how we're going to sign Pleky, Pouliot, price/halak.

Gomez = 7.35 Million per year.
Gionta = 5 Million per year.
Cammalleri = 6 Million per year.
Hamerlik = 5.5 Million per year.

23.85 Million...fuck me
The only one that gives the bang for the money is cammalleri.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Feb-02-2010 17:51:

the only way is to take back similar salary for another dud.

Gomez is playing ok...other than the turnovers. He has been a point a game player for the last month. Too much money though...I can't believe Gainey had to throw in Ryan Macdonaugh to get him. Higgins should have been enough...speaking of Higgins, it looks like he is going to be a Calgary Flame.

Posted by Romchik22 on Feb-02-2010 17:58:

I agree that gomez is showing good numbers. But when he doesn't have decent wingers he can't play for shit. Plekanec on the other hand has been playing preety well at the begining of the season with no stable wingers until he got paired with Andrei and Mike.
I have this bad feeling that Toronto is going to be a better team in the next 2-3 years to come

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Feb-02-2010 18:04:

Montreal has 13 players from the current roster under contract for next year. The total salary cap hit is just under $45 million. With no goalies signed for next year, and both goalies will probably want raises, there is going to be serious cap issues. They are going to have less than a million dollars per player available for next year to fill the roster. Considering the average player makes well over a million it looks like montreal will have to fill its roster with bums or youngsters from the AHL

no good wingers?

Pouiliot is killing it, and before Gionta got hurt, he was too.

Pleks has slowed down because there has not been a winger to replace A. Kostitsyn....now with Camillieri gone...man.

@ Chem: The salary cap issues is another reason i think we should trade Markov and Price together for a young asset with low $$$$ and some high draft picks. Those 2 guys in a package could fetch great return.

I'm not the Gm though...but if i was i would do it now. We don't even know how much the cap is going down by next year.
