I'm sorry to inform you of this, but the horrors of the drug cartels are not going to stop because of individual action and people no longer using drugs. Saying that I could help reduce drug cartel crime by not using drugs is like saying I can reverse global warming by just recycling. Not only are drugs just one aspect of the cartels, but we need a larger movement than just single individuals to generate real change.

Cartels don't just run of drugs. They make profits through other methods such as gun sales, human trafficking, black market, illegal DVD sales, etc. Just taking drugs out of a cartel is like taking the grocery section out of a Super Walmart. It might not make as much money...but it's still a fucking Walmart.

As individuals we have certain personal liberties that we should be allowed to enjoy without government intrusion or social ostracism. Your issue is not the individuals enjoying those freedoms, but with the government agencies that keep drugs criminalized. These laws are what are allowing illegal drug trade to thrive, otherwise the drugs someone takes could be grown, manufactured, processed, and sold legally within the nation with no need for illegal drug trade.

As for moral loopholes, so far Mexico has claimed about 35,000 deaths due to drug cartels. Now lets round that number up to combine Latin American drug cartel deaths and even South American drug cartel deaths. I am not to sure of what the number is but just to be safe lets say 1,000,000 people died due to drug cartels.

22,000,000 people use illegal drugs in the United States alone. Should those 22 million people overdose and kill themselves so 1 million (a ridiculously high number that I pulled out of my ass) people can live? I leave that moral dilemma to you.

That being said, I feel bad for the situation you are in, I just don't believe your solution is the right one. We all need to push our government reps into making serious change at drug law and policy.

This is the very same approached that worked for me more than a decade ago (before my fiancée was kidnapped, incidentally), when a teacher approached my class and threw the hard facts on us. From that point on, I stayed away from drugs because I was aware of their social impact. And it seems to have worked for the classroom in general, except for a couple of kids in the back of the class who started arguing with him - recreational drug users themselves.

This is the very same approach that has had some visibility in Brazilian society in general, and that can be seen in films like "Elite Squad" (check the link rdevito posted above). It's not a lofty approach. It's a desperate reaction, which seems to work when you're familiar with the carnage.

All I did, in short, was try a previously successful formula here. Apparently, it doesn't always work.

They drove for hours, repeatedly probing her for answers, and beating the living hell out of the neighbour. During the whole time, they told the guy he shouldn't have flirted with a drug pusher's woman. Flirted! I can't imagine what would've happened if the guy had gotten (un)lucky.

The gang then left them in a desert highway, after midnight, shooting at them (but missing miserably), and the two by now had nothing but their clothes (actually, this doesn't really apply to the neighbour, who looked like the incredible Hulk in reverse).

My English is a bit clunky because I had to type this all in a hurry, but this is the story. I'm sure this won't have any impact on my argument, but since you asked, here's the whole thing.

Oh, but I definitely agree with you. Everything you pointed out is most definitely true, and an intrinsic part of the problem.

Like I said in my previous post, this is part of an approach that has been gaining some momentum here in Brazil (the "drugs sponsor drug pushers" bit, mainly - we haven't called for a mass overdose session yet, as that would be desirable )... and I thought I could bring this here.

Bad idea.
