That's true, but when someone who is that young and in that good of a physical condition dies out of nowhere, it does raise some red flags, especially when they had been treated for possible substance abuse. I doubt an NHL enforcer like him would be going to that for therapy, and not drug abuse.

I would imagine the results should be released in the next couple days, so I guess we'll know soon enough. Tragic either way, for sure.

Hockey is easily the most demanding sport in North America. Americans like to think it is football...but they play 17 games a year once a week and have 1 minute breaks almost between each play. You want to see what an nhl player who was a 4th liner looks like at 40? It ain't pretty, most of them can barely walk.

That is true about the playing fewer games and having breaks between each play, but the physical toll on their bodies is probably just as great as hockey. NFL players have tons of health problems after they retire. Knee replacements, back problems, etc. I mean the average career of an NFL RB is about 3-5 years. They literally are getting hit, and hard, on every single play. And they're getting hit by guys that weigh 250-300 pounds and can run a 4.5-5 sec 40 yard dash. It's fairly rare to see NFL players playing past 35 because of the toll being put on their bodies. Yeah, the plays are shorter, they get breaks between each one, etc, but the time during the play is incredibly violent for almost every position.

Also, what's the average shift time for an NHL player (not defensemen) like 15-30 seconds? So they're getting a minute or 2 break every 15-30 seconds too.

as per the size thing: look at what happened to Chara in the first round (biggest player in the nhl). He spent 2 days in hospital for an illness that only requires re-hydration for a normal sized person.

Either way we won't find out until after the playoffs are over. Then during the off season this will be a very hot topic, especially if it is deemed to be a hockey related death. Headshots and career ending cheap shots are the hot topic this year considering how many premier players where taken out this year. If it is proven to be hockey related, the owner and league will finally be forced to step up and protect their biggest assets....the guys who are on the ice getting the asses in the seats.

go lightning go!

first line players easily play 1 to 2 minute shifts. 82 game season, with 2 games in 2 days (including travel which kills the nfl)...sometimes up to 4 games a week...on skates, with hard boards that do no forgive, with weapons in the hands, in a sport where you are allowed to punch people in the head with minimal repercussion. (not to mention blocking a piece of galvanized rubber going 100mph hurts...even as a goalie.)

have you ever played hockey russel? because i played hockey for 12 years and football for 7. Football doesn't even come close...and i say this from the perspective of a guy that has gotten concussions playing football. One year, a guy in our hockey league was killed, and another one paralyzed....at 15 years old.

imagine.

No, I've never played hockey. I'm not trying to take away from hockey either, as I've always thought that hockey players were probably the toughest of any professional sport, but at what ages did you play football? The gap even between college and the NFL is massive. The speed and size of the players is just ridiculous in the NFL. Also, being on skates makes things less dangerous imo. Someone getting cut by a skate is very rare, and having a foot planted in the ground with spikes makes it much more likely to sustain massive knee injuries. I'd post some videos, but they're pretty fucking disgusting. I could me wrong, but I would guess that running puts more wear and tear on knees/ankles than skating does too.

tell that to bobby orr.

the guy is 63 and still gets yearly surgery to correct knee injuries that happened over 30 years ago.

Yeah, I mean the same can be said for older NFL retirees. Even guys who retired maybe 5 years ago have serious issues especially with their knees and backs. Granted, I never played hockey before, but when I played football our coaches used to tell us that if every part of our body didn't hurt the morning after games/practices, we weren't playing hard enough, and that was 18 year old kids.

Either way, they're both by far the most violent sports, and I think we should take this time to laugh at soccerfags.

You should check out hurling if you've never seen it played before too. That is a fucking violent sport.

i've been to Ireland

I broke my wrist when I was like 16 getting hit by a hurling bat. It seemed like someone would get hurt in almost every game lol

playing any sport drunk will get you hurt.

Posted by srussell0018 on May-16-2011 19:27:

They actually gave us coolers of guinness instead of water.

Posted by chimera66 on May-16-2011 23:28:

the shit thing about hockey is the recovery time because there really isn't any.

anyway, it doesn't matter care who wins i just hope we get good hockey...although I am a tad drawn to Vancouver and Boston.

I was talking about this with one of my friends the other day. I think I lose interest in the NHL playoffs more than any other sport once my team has been eliminated. I haven't watched any games since the Sabres lost, and I probably won't until the later games of the finals. I guess it's probably because hockey is the one sport in this country that I've never played before, and while I do like it a lot, it's hard to stay interested once I no longer care who wins.

Posted by chimera66 on May-17-2011 02:19:

i somewhat agree with that. there was a time that i was all about the playoffs no matter what but now i'm an adult and i don't have time to watch it all. also my team never made the playoffs so the interest level has always been about the quality of the match ups and my schedule. also, i never played but i find women's hockey to be boring so don't think i missed too much .

Tequila and curling do not go well together.

Posted by Ian on May-18-2011 02:27:

this game is epic. I called a 6-6 during the 2nd period, so let's see...

Posted by chimera66 on May-18-2011 04:45:

i only watched the 3rd and highlights but what a strange game! from what i saw those were some nice goals but i'll be interested in seeing what happens in Game 3; the lightning's coach wasn't too happy with the "pond hockey" so should be interesting to see a change in style. as for that seguin kid, love pleasant surprises like him in the playoffs.

That isn't even close to a sick goal. All he really used was his speed to get past the D and the move on the goalie is something anyone in my beer league can do.

Coolest story on the internet, bro.
