What do you mean stay in business? Ryze is doing fine. It's had a good start since in its renovation.

They seriously need to step it up. I went for Nicole Moudaber on Saturday and was thoroughly disappointed. The bathrooms and coat check were an absolute nightmare. I ended up walking back out to my friend's car to check my coat instead of waiting 30 minutes in line. The bathroom lines were long enough to make you reconsider going to the bathroom. The line reached outside the bathroom by at least 6-7 people. The lights were a disaster too. Very dated system and a lighting guy that used way too many strobe lights and way to bright overall. At one point, the very bright house lights above the dancefloor came on (in addition to the intelligent lighting) for no less than 2 minutes. I was starting to see why some other people had on sunglasses. On top of that, it was so fucking hot inside due to the amount of people they let in that night (and severe lack of fans). The security guy at the entrance with the person county thing-a-ma-bob checking IDs either didn't know what their capacity was... or wouldn't tell me. Very shady. Looks like we have another Guv on our hands. We eventually found a spot near the exit door at the front that was cool - a little too cool because of the door always open. We finally found a cool spot to dance on the stage after 3AM.

Oh, and the bar is overpriced too. $5 for water, $7 for a bottle of Canadian, $8 for a cooler. This is after paying $40 for an advanced ticket btw.

The only thing thing good about this club is the sound system. Moudaber killed it so that prevented the night from being a complete write off. Already have my ticket for Derrick May this sat

In summary: Coda is my favourite club in this city.

Those drink prices are pretty standard btw. Maybe $0.50 or $1 more depending on the venue.

I know they're not crazy expensive, but they're at least $1 more than they should be. It was just fuel to the fire when taking everything else into consideration.

ryze: experienced the long line for coat check at dubfire. the bathroom line was long but it went quick and most people wait for the stalls so if you need to piss it goes by pretty quick. went for hernan and had an amazing time. zero problems. hernan KILLED IT !

haven't been to coda yet but i think i will be there every saturday in march besides jamie jones.. having a hard time choosing between tennis and nick warren atm too. gui boratto ?! is that true? trying to pay off my debts but all these upcoming parties are making it hard

whos really left for Ryze... kind of surprised Nicole Moundabar got booked twice in what 6months maybe by Ryze

bathoom lineups are one thing, but these were far too long imo. Long because they over packed the place, which affects more than just your dance space. It affects room temperature, bar wait and coat check wait. 30 minutes in line waiting is unacceptable. Since the line was at the back, people entering the club for the first time and anyone going to or returning from the bathroom were pushing through the line to get to the dance floor. The whole club, minus the stage, was like this. People constantly pushing through to get wherever.

Sweaty clubs aren't unavoidable. It's not that difficult to get a decent circulation system in place. If you they aren't going to go the full 9 and invest in a massive a/c unit (what club would?). then at least buy a dozen fans (can't cost more than $100/each) and spread them around. There was one in the stage area which was a god send and completely saved our night in that department. This solution wouldn't cost much and could be set up in 1 day.

As for drinks, everyone has their own opinion on what price is appropriate. I would never consider this club fancy, so I think $7 is steep for a domestic beer. Coda, Toika, Guv etc all charge $6 at the most.

Like I said before, not any of these things drove me nuts. It's just a bunch of small things that added up over the course of the night. The music and sound were fantastic, which is why I put up with everything else and stayed till 5AM.

Also, my girlfriend would like to add that there was no toilet paper in the bathroom stalls. On the way in, the bathroom attendant was handing each person enough for doing their number 1 job. There was toilet paper on the back of each toilet, but they had fallen on the floor at some point and were soaked in piss. This was happening on 3 different trips to the bathroom. How long does it take for a staff member to check on the bathroom situation every hour?

She played Stereo Montreal both times the night before. Whenever she's at Stereo, Ryze gets her the next day.

CODA "continues to book" the hottest acts, they have been open since Jan 18th.

And there are older people who dont know who the young acts are, they only want to see the legends or djs they know.

Both places cater to different markets like prog Zabiela, Hernan, and trance.

well theyve been open since Oct under the 794 Bathurst name...
The new location is not the point, the point is Footwork/Coda has been growing and they are the biggest club in the city to cater to non commercial houe music and Ryze/Moskito have been the biggest threat to them... Ryze/Moskito has only been around for.... what 2years(i think) and they already had to undergo a rebranding... can they survive?

they've been booking a wide genre of music from house to techno to edm to dubstep... im sure they had a few other one off events (hiphop, glitch)... will this keep them alive?

IMO I think the worst thing about Ryze is the building itself. A steep ass staircase sucks to wait on (getting in) and walk down when you're leaving. Having people walk in beside the stage and traverse the club to hit coat check is just awful, at least it's not down two flights of stairs anymore. Oh yeah, the bathrooms really are utter shit though. Two of the smallest stalls of all time and three urinals inside the most cramped washroom possible.
