ull find on most vinyl it'll say "Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting and copying of this work prohibited". It all depends on the discrepency of the club to be fair. ive been in one that wunt let me play n e of my own stuff. had to use theirs.

my own opinion is... Cd's are easier on the whole, but i find it easier to actually beat mix with vinyl... its all confusing, but i think i prefer vinyl

A-Track is where its at.

In all honesty, I love both, I only have decks right now, but I also love what you can do on a CDJ-800 and 1000, CDs have there benefits and so do Vinyl, to me I actually prefer the sound of Vinyl aswell, I don't care which one TECHNICALY sounds better, its what sounds best to me that is the best for me, I love both and wanna use both, so long live Vinyl and may CD tag along with it or get better in some way.

Heya Dez,

However the 'Unauthorised Public Performance' bit is covered by the PPL (Public Performance Licence) that clubs have to have. Actually anywhere that has music playing as a feature has to have one of those licences. This is true for any music medium you decide to play publicly even if they are A-tracks as the P-Child mentioned
A public perfomance licence does not however cover copied material and that's where the problem with burned CDs come in. If you own the original at home you have as such paid for the rights for that track and using it wouldn't be a problem but there are not many people who can say that when they down load MP3s it's of stuff they already have on CD.

Bottom line is that with a PPL (Can't remember what it's calle din the US again) it becomes and authorised performance.

All the best folks
Nem

i only use cds if the track isnt released on vinyl

Can I just say the following....

Play them both!! It's all about the music at the end of the day.

Nuff Said

Vinyl, although cds can have their uses. If a person does a lot of producing I would say a cd deck is vital.

Idea

no doubt vinyl is the King but cd is also fast becoming very very important for dj's to express themselves further...

just ask steve lawler, i've seen him play at TWO TRIBES and he was using cd's extensively!
Also Phil K, he's also known to be using cd's more frequently.
Infact more and more pro dj's are getting into cd's due to the technological advantage it has over decks. Also it helps them with their own bootlegs and productions since its easier and faster to burn it on a cd then wait for it to be manufactured on vinyl.

but otherwise, yes, vinyl will always be the King for dj's and it only being progressive mindedness to accept that cd's also play an important role for any dj to express themselves further instead of just dissing it period!

quite true.

although there is no true replacement for vinyl, cd decks like the cdj series are close enough and when it comes to getting out self produced material there is no better way then to burn your stuff and be ready to go.

one use of cd decks that i will not support is the pimping of bootlegged stuff off of file networks then claiming to be a logit dj.

The way I see it, vinyl is best. But I also think that after you've been spinning a while, it can be necessary to buy one or two CD decks. I think that because alot of songs are harder and sometimes very expensive to get on vinyl, CDs are a good choice. As for starting out though, I think vinyl is the way to go. But I see nothing wrong with both at the same time. I guess its just vinyl or vinyl and CDs, Cds alone seems way to 'fake' to me.

you don't have to discuss
vinyls rules..

I think Vinyl is the best cuz' the quality is better, and it is more oldschool

But I can see that others prefer CD's cuz' they are easier to get, and you can mix your own music

By the way, I sometimes use CD's too, but still, i like Vinyl way more

WoW, my picture is a lil' bit too big....

Cd's, ... I know most DJ's hate me for saying this, but it's cheaper, easier and it takes less space and you can easily use your own edits, remixes and tracks

I hate you

naah, just playing, i think that CD's are the future of DJing, though it is a little sad, and vinyl is much better in my opinion, and more oldskool!

Posted by dj chex on Mar-05-2004 07:40:

I think the future of djing involves more than just one media over the other. Vinyl is my favorite for mixing and what i do but i also use a laptop w/ traktor dj studio in place of cds when i play out. As for cds i feel they are extremely important for us to be able to use properley in a club setting. Heck, the next thing on my to buy list is a dn-s3000 or s5000 if only i had the $$$

I definitly agree. personally i was thinking of getting a cd deck only becuase the tunes that arent pressed on vinyl anymore are available on cds. however i would not spin only on cd decks. Its alot more fun to spin with vinyl i think.

Two comments...

1/ By your theory we should have stayed on horseback too? Stay true to the old traditions and horseless carraiges should never be permitted!?

2/ A close friend and diehard vinyl DJ just got back from the Winter Music Conference, said he was amazed by the number of DJ's now spinning on CDJ 1000's. He said in fact he saw more DJ's that used them in some part of their sets than not. Also interesting was that far more progressive and trance DJ's spun CD's than not, and DJ's like Nick Warren spun almost exclusively on CDJ's using the turntable platter as a convienient location to layout CD's to play!

Go figure?
Phil

Tiesto used cds at gelredome...i see nothing wrong with it. i prefer vinyl over cds, but both is even better.

Posted by Allied Nations on Mar-23-2004 04:29:

tiesto used cds here in lima.

I started out vinyl and am LOVING it. BUt obviously, not many people have access to high quality versions of the latest songs. CD's are definitely more convenient. I wouldn't mind using them

It's different for traveling DJs... a lot of them still play vinyl in their own countries, or atleast a mixture. Taking records abroad is a nightmare. Especially to the US so I'm told.

With regards to your 'horseback arguement', I see where you are coming from but don't think it applies 100%. I'm not in the way of progress, I just don't see CDs as progress.
It probably comes down to each individuals interpretation of the DJ. For many just the act of spinning and manipulating vinyl is the joy and the artform in itself.

I have seen a disturbing trend amongst DJs who use CDs though. A lot of people are recording tracks at home onto CD in such a way that they don't have to beatmatch in the club... I stood behind Tall Paul and saw him play a whole set this way. I don't see the point in doing that... no fun. And that really isn't progress... that's Fisher Price mixing.

Cheers
