sorry i'm new to following barcelona, curious...when does the season end, playoffs begin? they go thru the summer or what?

Posted by noikeee on Apr-23-2007 08:27:

Season starts at about September until June. (more or less) The summer is holidays and pre-season fitness training. Every 2 years there is a major national teams competition in the summer too (euro cups and world cups).

There's no such thing as "playoffs" in football, except for some leagues where they use it for deciding who gets relegated. But that doesn't matter now. Barcelona usually plays the following competitions:

- UEFA Champions League. This is the most important competition a club can win. In its current format, teams start by playing a group stage (teams are divided in groups of 4), then the 2 best from each group advance to a somewhat long knockout stage. This year Barcelona was eliminated already by Liverpool in the first stage of knockout. Last year Barcelona won the whole thing.

Champions League knockout stage schedule

- La Liga. This is the spanish championship, one of the most competitive in the world (nowadays only the english league is better). 20 teams play twice against each other, giving a total of 38 games during the season. Whoever gets more points during these 38 games is the champion - there is no playoffs. Currently Barcelona leads with 1 point advance over Sevilla, with 7 games to go.

Current La Liga standings

- Copa Del Rey. This is a knockout-only competition that all teams in Spain participate (even amateur teams too). Barcelona is on the semi-finals, and looks set to advance and face Sevilla in the final, after having won the first game against Getafe.

Copa Del Rei semifinals

Yeah, but everyone hates those so it doesn't matter neither.

Speaking of the dutch league, AZ, Ajax and PSV are all leading the thing with the same amount of points with 1 game to go. With that playoff thing, I guess whoever just misses out on the title will also risk missing Europe? Or are the playoffs only for the 4th placed and below?

Love to see villareal beating barca.

Nope. Number 2 plays number 5 and number 3 plays number four. Then the winners play each other and that winner can go to the CL qualification stage. The loser goes to the UEFA cup.

The losers from those first games play each other for a uefa cup ticket. The loser of that game plays against the winner of the play-offs held amongst the numbers 6 to 9 to get the final uefa cup ticket.

So yes, number 2 can get nothing, but the'ld have to really mess it up for that to happen.

yes but he became smart and now has won 2 medals in the best player and best young player in england category.

He will also very soon win 2 more medals for European and World Player of the year. With so much fame, he will end up banging all the wives of the Barcelona players and live happily ever after.

The End

best player in the world is either ronaldinho, ronaldo or messi,

last year it was all ronaldinho but then he failed to deliver (like the rest of brasil) during the World Championships in Germany.

This year his form isnt that outstanding as last year although he's been growing ever since the start of the competition and has scored like 18 goals or even more.

He played really well against deportivo for exampe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk4w...related&search=

You can say that at the moment, Ronaldo is the best player in Europa and thus in the world. But thats just at the moment. Ronaldinho and Messi certainly have just as much talent as Ronaldo and i'ld say even more. For example, Ronaldinho's last season was in my opinion alot more impressing than Ronaldo's current season.

Considering what he's allready doing at his age (19) Messi could be one of the greatest of all times. He was also the youngest player to score in the spanish primera division.

And Rooney is good but doesnt match any of these players.

I'd say kaka should be considered on your list as well, he's been on of the most consistent players over the last few seasons..

Cristiano has a lot more pace, he blitzes a lot of people on the break simply through pure pace and then skill, Messi is skillful with a burst of pace but not the sustainable stuff that cristiano has, and ronaldinho is more skills but is probably a better finisher than those guys and passer too. All 3 are good to watch when they're on form anyway. Rooney is a good player but he's not in that level yet anyway, Ronaldo was where rooney is now 2 years ago but has added end product and consistency.

messi, best player..... not even close, and i am not saying it as a hater...

i hate ronaldo but i can see how some poeple say he is one of the best.. messi.. hahaha negative.
i think there are better players in the brazilian leauge or in the argentinian leauge than messi.

with ronaldhino.. ya he could be considered one of the best, why not... ronaldo, why not.... messi.. NEGATIVE!

i think playoffs are held in some of the "weaker" european top flight leagues, but yes, it's to find out who gets a spot in certain competitions.

kaka has to be one of the best ball dribblers under tight pressure i've seen. it's very hard to knock him off the ball and vice versa.

kaka was unbelieveable against Man U..definitely one of my favorite players now...alongside Messi and Ronaldo

"Barcelona winger Lionel Messi has rejected the overtures of Italian champions Internazionale. He revealed, however, that he may consider moving to Italy in the future." Eurosports.com

What's up with this? Any chance he'll leave in a year or so?!!!?!?
