this was awesome. The hydra stage smashed the main stage for most of it. For a lot of saturday night main stage was very quiet while hydra was insane.
highlights
j'00'f - banging trancey psy completely as expected, was the one of the few people who dj'd who could mix. Nice solid effort.
Chicago and rajah - old dudes made me laugh, dancing round main stage with inflatable guitars ad only bothering every now and then to pretend they werent playing a prerecorded set. Great entertainment.
rollin connection - guy in the red t-shirt dropped a growling dark prog monster very early in their set, rest of the set was brilliant but that track was insane.
alcohol checks LOL
bundy in the 333 stage.
lowlights
camping next to the g.o.d. stage.
i think it was alex kidd mcing SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Alot of fun and my first ever earthcore.
Had to wait an hour to get in but apparently if we went earlier there was a 2-3 hour wait so im not complianing.
Some great music at times and some absolute crap. I couldnt get over how many train wreck mixes i heard. Are they dj's or just producers coz the standard was poor. The main stage was good for about 2 hours. The Hydra stage was playing tunes at 378 BPM (every time i went past it sounded like a drum roll but apparently thats normal speed), i couldnt keep up and was no where near munted as some of those ferals but boy it was a pissa and it looked like they were loving it. Hydra had heaps more atmosphere then main stage but Market Stage (Sunny) owned all weekend.
Started with suzuki playing an electro set friday night and crashed in bed when he finished at about 3pm. Woke up to a 4000 degree day and nearly passed out 10 times. thank god for the creek.
Rollin Connection played the best set i have seen them play. Just minimal prog and that system was unreal.
Virginia also surpised me - havent seen much of her but she had the crowd rocking. By the way my friend is in love with you after that set!!!
Caught Michael Mayer for a bit and he took minimal to another level. If it got anymore minimal it would have been silent but fuk he was off the hook - loved it.
In and out of stages all day and night but there was only one person i wanted to close my earthcore experience and that was keitel and even though it was pretty dead - he still manages to rock it.
Left early Sunday to beat the rush and lucky i did as the Drug Bus was still setting up.
Great weekend and cant wait for the next one - its not easy at work today though
*Philby you ok? i saw you running in the bushes early sunday morning and you looked like you were in a rush hahaha
philby has an interesting story to tell everyone
i had a good time, it was my first earthcore too. overall it was a really fun experience. we arrived around 8 i think on friday night and spent around 2 hours waiting to get in which was shit but ah well. had a car accident in the camping grounds, wtf? we were sitting there in the car at the spot, person in the car in front of us reversed into our car, lol. got our tent setup and headed in to the vip room (sorry simon haha) around 10:30, saw dj lucas playing breaks which was cool. after him was some guy called jigsaw, he played some really great stuff, good psy trance. after him was chicago, who was crap, played shit tunes and had even shitter mixing so yeah.
i think at that stage teapot and myself decided to go back to the camp, and after about 30 seconds of walking we realised we had no idea where it was. we walked around for over an hour i think, did a couple of big laps of the camping grounds and still had no idea where to go, so we headed back to the arenas haha. i think we went to the vip room, or maybe the sunny stage, i dont really remember! i was a little drunk and very tired, around 3 or 3:30 i think we had another go at finding our camp site and finally made it hehe.
i had zero sleep and woke up with a huge headache and just felt shit, spent around an hour in the st johns tent from being dehydrated and spent most of the day lying down back at camp. so after a few beers the night before i was a bit of a pussy choir boy hehe. it was crazy hot though, got to 42 during the day.
the arenas were pretty empty during the day which was understandable, except the hydra stage which i think was packed the whole weekend! i felt bad for anyone on the main stage, because it was pretty empty until late saturday night i think. that was shame because whenever i walked past the music was pretty good. i guess the hydra stage was better though, that was where the action was. saturday arvo was great with dr b and freq playing mad sets. michelle adamson was alright too, and different to what i expected in terms of set up, she was playing the tunes and singing live compared to jan johnston who mimed over the top of the records a dj played.
saw a bit of rollin connection early on, thought they were a bit boring though, apparently they were better later but ah well. i thought richie jay was crap before j00f, hard and shit tunes imo hehe, j00f was pretty good but ive heard better stuff from him, i guess it comes down to the event and time slot though.
just before johns set spiro came and said that eskimo and gms had cancelled, and "we all know what gms' reputation is like for getting on planes" so that was a bit of a bummer, until we find out later that gms did get on the plane and just arrived late, then got told to go home by the earthcore people. so yeah could be some interesting stuff going on there hehe.
eskimo was supposed to be straight after john so instead there was dj gabbi or something from vienna, i thought she played some good stuff. i think went back to the tent for a while, thought i would have a nap before dj lucas who was also getting stuffed around a little, he said he thought he was playing the hydra stage initially, then saw the lineup and he was in the vip room twice, and said why bother flying me out here to put me in the little vip room twice, ive got friends who arent vip and stuff who want to see me, what the hell, so he took over eskimos set. and i fell asleep and missed it
got up sunday morning around 6, walked around and the main stage was going off as well as the hydra stage still, i thought it was wierd getting up at that time to go out and dance! normally at something like two tribes the security are kicking you out at 6am but this places was still going off hehe.
caught the last 30 mins of protoculture who was brilliant, then antix came on and were a bit hit and miss, a bit too deep i think for first hour but then was mad for the last part of their set. raja ram is a funny guy, some good antics on stage, its a shame he played shit tunes imo. including some hard psy trance version of thunderstruck, made by some local guy who was chatting to someone behind the stage, heard it and wtf hes playing my tune omg! and ran inside, thought that was cool hehe.
mo-shic was mad, but he was on the same time as raja ram so where do you think all the people were hehe. but it was pretty cool stuff. teapot can tell you all about it, and how he was getting fucked around too. got my antix and god save the machine vinyl covers signed which was cool, i think thats why i was running lister, to grab them and be back in time before the artists pissed off hehe.
so yeah i had a pretty good time. the only real lowpoints were being sick most of saturday and missing dj lucas, i wanted to see him because i interviewed him for itm and i was pretty interested to see what kind of stuff he would play and i had chatted to him on and off through the weekend and i ended up missing his set cause i was asleep hehe. ah well. a few of the artists weren't happy with various aspects of the event so it will be interesting to see what kind of threads pop up about it hehe. but yeah i had a good time, nice to see people like lister and sass from tickled pink, we had no idea if any TAs were coming so good to bump into people. i think i can see myself there again

haha
yes it was an adventure which i think was all i wanted in the end
It's been posted by a usually very reliable source that Spiro announced on Sunday it was the last EC?
Apparently the amount of red tape getting thrown at them every year has just got too much. I really hope it's not true, but it sounds like it might be
dean i would not be surprised if that story is atleast partly true, spiro was pretty pissed off and alot of artists were pissed off with him in turn. there were big issues with payment and treatment of artists. spiro had alot of dramas as well, in the lead up and during the event. although instead of it being cancelled he might scale it down because compared to previous times i have been it was not as packed and apparently numbers were well down last year as well.
they need less stages in my opinion, its all well and good to have heaps of dj's and performers but the bottom line is that if you dont have the numbers the stages are empty and even if you do have the numbers everyone just flocks to the hydra stage. i reckon they should have three main stages (main stage, hydra and the market) and then have a vip room. that is enough and you can get good variety as well. i also think that they should make the hydra stage the main stage and have all the 140+ bpm artists there, and call the main stage something else and make it a more psygressive/progressive stage to give some variety. it pissed me off on saturday night that everywhere except the market was playing really hard.
