Freed Iranian diplomat says US tortured him
An Iranian diplomat freed two months after being kidnapped in Iraq has said he was tortured by United States forces while in captivity, Iran's Fars News Agency has reported.
Iran has blamed the US military for his abduction, while US officials deny any role.
His comments follow the release of 15 British troops from Iran, where they say they were ill-treated.
"Jalal Sharafi, in an interview with Fars, explained how he had been kidnapped and tortured severely by American forces with the help of agents working for Iraq's communications organisation, which works under the supervision of the CIA," Fars News Agency said.
"He showed reporters the marks left by torture on his body that are now being treated by doctors."

free the middle east
free them!
A couple "things" with the Iranian torture story.
1. He was abducted from Baghdad, not a member of the group of northern Iranian officials taken by American personnel that made the news a few weeks back. He was abducted by Iraqi police, not Americans. There's no denying he was in "Iraqi waters."
2. I find the timing extremely odd that days after he was released, and a day after the British soldiers were released, he decides to come forward with his story. It claims that he is currently hospitalized for the injuries he received, but instead of seeing those grievous injuries, we are told that he "showed them to reporters."
3. Why is he so adamant about it being the CIA? Did people really approach him saying "we're with the CIA, prepare to be tortured?" He said that he was interrogated in Arabic and English, but does that (if it happened) preclude any other possible group.
Who the hell knows, it could have happened, although it seems awfully sloppy by the CIA if it did. It's just a bit peculiar that a day after allegations of bad conditions by the British soldiers on the part of Iran, a mysterious Iranian figure, who no one seems to know, comes forward and professes that he too was tortured, although no injuries are shown or great specifics given, and is adamant it was the US CIA.

There was more video released today showing the marines laughing and playing ping pong, eating together and talking, and generally looking pretty chill and relaxed given the circumstances.
I know that things can be staged and all that shit, but they didn't look too stressed in this new video and they certainly weren't going about things in a way that would suggest they were being told to play ping pong at gunpoint.
It's also pretty disgusting and disrespectful that these troops are being allowed to whore their story to the highest bidder while they're still in service. This makes me think that the MoD wants to use these stories in the propaganda war with Iran since so far, their story of terror and poor treatment isn't really coming across too well given the contradicting video evidence.

Ah yes, Tranceaddict's infamous terrorist lovers always looking for an angle to bash the West, and now bash the former hostages. Even if Iran went to their homes and slaughtered their families you'd still be seeing them come here and defend Iran's actions

| Sailors' statement in full Last Updated: 1:23am BST 06/04/2007 Here is the full statement made by the 15 service personnel held in Iran following their return to the UK: "It goes without saying that we are extremely happy to be back in the UK and reunited with our loved ones. "Touching down at Heathrow this morning was for all of us a dream come true and the welcome home that we have enjoyed today was one that none of us will ever forget. "The past two weeks have been very difficult but by staying together as a team we kept our spirits up, drawing great comfort from the knowledge that our loved ones would be waiting for us on our return to the UK. "It is only now that we have learned of the enormous public support we have all enjoyed in the UK and we wish to thank everyone for their thoughts, kind words and prayers. It means so much to us all. "We all longed to be back with our loved ones and now that we are home we are all very much looking forward to spending some time with them." "While we are extremely grateful for all the support we have had from the media, we would also ask that we have some space and privacy at this time." The statement was followed by four quotes from some of the service personnel. Lieutenant Felix Carman said: "On arrival at Royal Marines Barracks Chivenor, we were completely overwhelmed by the wave of good will we received. "The support from the media, the Ministry of Defence and especially our families was incredible and we are just delighted to be back in the UK." Operator Mechanic Arthur Batchelor said: "I am delighted to be back home and reunited with my sister and godmother. "We started this thing together as a team and I am glad to have been reunited with our families as a team. I am looking forward to spending time with my family." Operator Mechanic Nathan Summers said: "It is only now that we are home that we have found out just how much support we have had and we still have. "It is a great relief to be back with friends and family." Marine Adam Sperry said: "I am ecstatic to be back and can't wait to get home. I feel like I have a lot of people to see before I get back to my unit after leave. "It is great to see all the positive support that we have had." |

Someone already said that it could well be staged, but they look awfully relaxed to be being filmed at gun point. Seriously, a bit of critical thinking would be appreciated. Many things could be happening here and plenty more evidence is sure to come out on both sides. What if they truly were treated well? What then? Will you just deny it (as you're doing with the video evidence) and confirm your biases with some other information? You're as bad as any of the other fanatics on here, rooting blindly for the home team. |

Clueless, just clueless.
If they were to be treated well you wouldnt have seen the Iranian state TV constantly parade them around. You wouldnt be hearing Iranian officials constantly changing their stories, and even threatening to put them on trial.
Again, Iran simply gave ammo to terrorist lovers like some of those found right here on this forum so they could try to argue this absurd point. The point is Iran illegally seized them and took them hostage.
Yeah, probably not what you want to hear, but this thread has become ridiculously pointless, I think it needs to die.
Basically it's a "he said, she said," "would have, could have, might have" type of debate. No side will win the other over in this way and no side will be able to justify its position this way. It boils down to who you're more prone to believe or not believe. Because each side has reasons why they could or could not be telling the truth, there's nothing more to be said.
So, unless something new and ground breaking comes out from either side, believe what you'd like but realize that with this type of discussion the possibility of swaying the other side is nil.
The stances:
British prisoners treated well -
*The Iranians said so
*There are pictures and movies of the soldiers looking happy
British prisoners treated poorly -
*The soldiers said so
