I prefer to think of you as grey. It's half way between black and white, right?

What's your background? If your background is Spanish, then you're white.

True Story: The Brazilian government now provides a list of "possible colours" for its citizens during census. In previous years, people would give the oddest possible colours, from "Ochre" to "Green".

It's not always that easy.

I've got Portuguese, Italian, Galician, Dutch, English, German, Arab, Jewish, African and Native Brazilian blood. I didn't recognise myself as being white until my friends (and some TA's) started telling me I was white... then I gave up trying to tell people I'm buff.

(Even though I still think I'm well buff )

The color thing is always odd, I feel like there is a different meaning to race inside of different cultures. In America, gingers would have been discriminated against as Irish men, now they are considered white along with anyone else. My grandfather is Native American but, from a very pale skinned tribe so he is considered white now, which sort of goes against what the American culture has defined as "white" But, after posting on TA I've begun to wonder if I am perhaps Sudanese.

What? If you're Spanish, you're white. End of story.
If I had wanted to say "if you're a giant clusterfuck of every race, then you're not white", I would have said "if you're a giant clusterfuck of every race, then you're not white".

Three years after I originally posted in this thread, and I've been in an interracial relationship (again) for 2 years now. It's not weird, and I love it.

We've definitely gotten more nasty looks from black males than old white ones. So strange... And wtf are you talking about (in 2008) with "black stomach?!"

Posted by Lira on Apr-16-2011 03:54:

But I'm not Spanish, I'm the result of a global orgy!

Seriously now: You know what strikes me as odd in former American segregation? How on Earth did African Americans end up with a different accent? I mean, I know how it happened and I know why it happened, but was contact so rare that people didn't sound the same?!

Actually, this track is so cheesy I feel sort of embarrassed whenever I hear it

thats kinda weird that people give you odd looks.

It's been so strange. Very few looks from older whites, which surprised me. My family lives in both the north Georgia mountains and the West Georgia (30 minutes from Alabama) suburbs.

In Atlanta, we've gotten people who stop us to smile and have a feel good moment since we're a walking example of the disintegration of racism. But we've also had black males eyeing us angrily as if I "stole" a member of their race, or that she's jumped ship.

So strange, and I'm really interested to see what social situations our child is put in.

Also, Marcus, yes. It WAS that rare, except in the north, which has far less of a difference. Also worthy of noting, there are far less interracial couples in NYC because the city is somewhat segregated. There are mostly whites in Manhattan and Brooklyn closer to the Hudson River, while Harlem and Bedford Stuy is predominantly black. This is slowly changing, but odd for a city as mixed as NYC.

the big arms, the hair on them, and vienna sausage fingers painted with pink tell me that "she" is probably a starting linebacker for Georgia Tech.

or that the camera is 6 inches from her arm?

Posted by srussell0018 on Apr-16-2011 14:49:

I dated a couple Indian and Asian girls in college. It wasn't really weird then just because there was a sizable percentage of minority students at my school. The whole subject of "Interracial relationships" is kind of silly to me. People are people, so it doesn't really matter what color their skin is or where their parents came from.
