Ha. I don't read the Random thread, so I had no idea he'd left, especially not on account of myself. He was a spineless streak of shit, though.

Someone in the future will pick TA forums for their thesis on self-regulatory aspects of online communities in the first two decades of the 21st century.

Please post the Jack burn on Meat187.

This is something that worries me a lot, actually.

I don't know how TA compares to other forums, but there's something of a hostility towards newcomers - specially those who don't "fit in" for whatever reason - that drives away most innovation that could be positive for these boards. On the other hand, it's hard, as a moderator, to even consider suspending someone for "being unfriendly", as this is hardly a good reason for revoking someone's posting privileges.

This is how it's self-regulating. I've defended this mechanic over and over again since I first started posting here. Most regulars have gotten better at just ignoring stupid meaningless threads, at least in MD. Also it seems like most people are getting more and more used to how forums work, and that lurking, searching and reading stickies is a good idea before clicking the "new thread" button.

Yeah, I said it as a joke, but it seems to be a real problem as well.

TA is definitely the most hostile forum I've ever been on, though I haven't been on many. Compared to some of the subsections of Something Awful forums, it's pretty much anarchy here. TA sometimes feels like a madhouse run by its inmates (no offense meant). If it was modded the same way SA is, more than half of the folks here would be banned, the rest probably suspended. It's a hyperbole, but you get my point.

It's true that posting on TA may sometimes get a bit uncomfortable even if you're not a newcomer. I mostly try to bring some value, discuss something interesting and actually make an effort, but then when someone brushes it off with a lazy insulting one-liner and others just find it funny, then it can be quite demotivating. I sometimes wonder why do I keep coming back here.

This would be a good thing if we had enough users to maintain the demographic, and we only drove away users who didn't contribute to these boards. I don't believe this is the case.

That's why I've always supported the exact opposite: we shouldn't take anything here too seriously (we're talking about music, not the cure for cancer), and we should welcome as many users as possible.

This is why I liked him. He didn't take anything (or anyone) seriously, and would always remind us that fun matters. In a way, we were arguing for the same thing.
