i'm looking toward the lean route and that means less weight and more reps plus more cardio. i shouldn't have written get big because i know i won't turn into serena williams or a man but the point is that i work out to get rid of stress and be healthy. i sweat and get good workouts, i spend enough time at the gym that i would be doing myself a disservice if i was half ass about the gym in general. overall i think my routine is relatively well thought out and productive...although i always welcome modifications. i use lower weights but it's important to me to have good form and go from one thing to the next relatively quickly so that i AM getting a good workout.

Understood, and BTW, very impressive squat

I've been gaining weight for the past year and I do it by eating junk food all the time. My arms got thicker but my stomach is fat like burger ass. I think if I stop eating so bad and start eating right I can turn that fat into muscle and be my ideal weight 175 but its all lean muscle.

Thanks.

I have been lifting for three years now. I never focused on legs until recently i noticed that I was shoulder pressing more than I could squat. I was pushing 225 shoulder press and could barely squat 205, this was just 6 months ago. After watching Arnolds video, and his remark about squating until he threw up, I decided to get serious about legs. Yesterday I squatted a clean (full range of motion) 335 four times. I am now a believer in pushing oneself to the limits, as this is what I have done for six months now and have achieved +130 pounds on squat. Twice during this past six months I have blacked out in the gym and was revived by trainers, and I dont regret it at all. Those were my best lifts.

Lift hard, or your wasting your time.

hehe, well blacking out might be taking it a bit far, as u can easily kill yourself...especially having 335lbs fall on your skull, but nice gains.

www.karateforums.com

this is where i find almost all of my work outs. it's useful, even if you don't practice any concentration.

great day at the gym, i spent about an hour on cardio (probably too much). several reps on free weights (biceps) 25X - 30X pounds

100 + stomach crunches.
bench press 120 - 160 pounds
shoulder press 80 - 100 pounds

some spartan push ups (about 20-25)

spent about 90 minutes on it all. approx wearing my italia calcio shirt of 94...felt great.

Thanks for the free advise. I quit smoking after 14 years. Was my first attempt to quit. We are now 13/14 months further and I still didn't smoke.I am so proud, but I gained 10 kg of weight. So I went to the gym and now I am addicted. I hit the gym 3 to 4 times a week. Loving cardio.

Started running the 5 km in 40 minutes and now I run it in 24:30. Don't like the weight, but some extra muscle would be great.

Is it wise to go max at cardio if you want to built muscle?

Absolutely. You can always do cardio whether your looking to put on muscle, or just slim up. On weightlifting days, I'll do usually no more than 20 mins AFTER the workout. Non-weightlifting days, you can do 45 mins-hour...depending on how you much fat you have left to drop. Once you slim up, and your looking to keep muscle, then you will want to limit your cardio so you don't get too skinny. it all comes down to what you are eating in the end, and what your body goals are.

I have been in that spot more than once....first thing you should do is put down those cigs and pick up some bacon.

After I get done with rehab class tomorrow, i'm going to the gym once again.

my goal?

every day, i want to do SOMETHING. i'm sick of being lazy and lathargic when it comes to working out on my own.

in 2009: i want to accomplish the following:

- be able to do 25 pullups non-stop
- gain at least 2" around my biceps (i don't even know what they are now, but i know they are small as shit)
- run the 1.5 mile PT test in under 11 minutes.
- i want to see my abs. like, seriously, w/out having to flex...like, they're just there. (i realize this will come with a combonation of proper diet as well, not just exercise)

anyone else have some gym goals for the new year?

also, when i move to oklahoma and get my own place, i'm totally buying that pullup-bar thing for your doorway

double edit,

also i want to get rid of my neckfat that i've developed over the year. i dunno how the fuck to do that; but i want my chiseled jaw line back!

i know i asked this before somewhere in the thread but I forgot and im way too lazy to search through 200+ pages...

i started running again after my workouts. i used to do long cardio which made me lose muscle so then i stopped running all together. now whats the reccomended ammount of cardio, im lifting with 3 sets of 10 reps for each exercise. i normally do around 15 minutes of jogging on the treadmall, is that enough to burn fat but not muscle? i lose almost 200 calories doing it, how much should i be losing? anyone?

for starters i'd try 4 sets of the same weight

as for your cardio your goal is to exercise at a PERCENTAGE of your maximum heart rate. to determine your MHR, subtract your age from 220. to burn fat and not blood sugar for energy, you want to stay in the 50%-70% of your MHR.

sustaining 50-70% MHR at least 3 to 5 times per week for 30-60 minutes is a good approach.

never understood why people do cardio after they lift weights. it's very dtrimental to muscle recovery and growth if you're not pouring bucket loads of calories and protein down your throat. if you're going to do long cardio i've always recomended people do that on their non-lift days or light cardio prior to lifting. if you're going to do anything immediately after you lift it sould be either eating, sleeping or rubbing one out...then sleeping

Its because your insulin is low after an intense lift resulting in more effective fat loss. At least that's what my old college hockey coach said.

oh ok. thought he was trying to bulk up

As of yesterday I am officially preparing for my marathon debut. The main focus will of course be on extending the distance of my weekend runs (LSD runs) with interval and shorter runs throughout the week.

Currently I'm at three times a week, might be extending it to four in a few months, but that depends on the overall progress.

Some weight loss in the meantime would be OK, I don't really like the idea of dragging along all of my current weight for 26.2 miles.

No gym for me, but I'm thinking about taking up something else besides running to keep it interesting and maybe to fill the fourth moment of exercise of the week.

alright so according to that my heart rate should be 121. im not sure if this treadmill reads the heart-rate since I've never actually looked at it before, hopefully it does.

the reason i never do cardio before my weight lifting is so that I have full energy for the work out. I'll start doing it on my off days. I used to run around 30-60 minutes without paying attention to the heart rate, and it definetly caused muscle loss. if i stick to what you say is there any chance of that?

I'll try the four sets. I work out two muscle groups per workout so it shouldn't be a problem.

yeah I am but I wanna lose some of the fat that I gained as a result of eating to bulk up without losing the muscle as I said.

Thanks! I've got two years of running experience (up to half marathons) as a start, but that's the easy part.

I'm trying to focus on just finishing it properly (i.e., without having to walk / stop) rather than having an exact time in my head. That'll be the focus if I ever try and go for a second

Best of luck to you too

Trying some new supplements this month while I'm on an alcohol break

I took the progain extreme during December and put on about 3kg of weight which was good, unfortunately I've been on a drink and drug binge this holiday and lost it all again, oops.

Anyone know if its better to combine the 2 products or just stick to 1 of them?

I'm also looking for some cheaper products as these cost nearly 40 quid each! Quite a lot for a 1 month supply

Oh well time to start again
