Not too bad, tied with Dj_goonie near the top. Congrats on another win vmc!

Thanks to the two judges for getting their results in. I would like to hear their comments on my mix if they don't mind sending me a PM. And thanks mr_sick for organizing the cometition again. Hopefully the next organizer will do just as good a job.

Congrat's to VMC for taking 1st place and to the rest of you for submitting your mixes. Here's some of my comments (sorry guys, been very busy looking for work the past couple weeks , will get the rest typed up later). And since it was a public competition, I'm making my comments public, but not the scores .

Trance Addict battle of the mp3 mixers battle V

1. john2 - missed many mixes, the first few mixes are too short e.g.: no transition. Youll need to learn to play with the high/lo levels so the mixes sound smoother.
You timed some of your mixes at the wrong place so the mix sounded really bad, even though you matched beats fairly well. It really disturbs the flow of the mix.
With more experience youll learn to notice the natural mixing spots in the songs, where things will sound more natural, so it does sound like one continuous song. Id say youre a bit rough around the edges right now, but with more practice youll do ok. BTW, I think if you rearranged those tracks youve chosen it would also really help the mix.
2. vmc a nice mellow opener to a very good set! The energy builds nicely in this set with beats matching up nicely and a nice smooth flow.
What can I say, you sound like a seasoned veteran resident DJ. Great track-list (no fluffy tunes) with good mixing skills. Other people should hear this set, its a keeper!
3. vrahnos whoa, if youre looking for the typical trance fluff, steer away. Well I should say Im not even sure Id call this trance. Ive got some hard-trance cds and this type of stuff is on there, so I guess.
Anyway, mixing the hard stuff is much harder IMO than typical trance, and youve done a good job with this set. I also think you should completely reverse this mix. I like it when it gets harder at the end of a set.
I must say that your set was quite a refreshing change of pace from most of the others, well done!
4. Titov pretty nice track-list. Most of your mixes were pretty good, or at least they seemed to be. You faded out in a few mixes too early so you lose the mix in transition and it sounds more like a radio broadcast than a DJ mix.
5. DJ Commisad beat-matching was well done, but you could adjust the bass/treble levels during transition to smooth it out a bit more though. Some sounded just a touch..off.
Your track selection seemed ok, not too much fluff and a nice journey while errrm, intoxicated.
6. Marius Linauskus what can I say about this set, except its almost perfectly mixed! There were no errors in the mixing with this set, only a couple spots that I thought could have sounded a touch better (I had to use a fine-toothed comb to find some), otherwise its a perfect mix!
Average track-list here, should get a crowd dancing. The flow and mood of this set are in complete unity. Very good set and a deserving listen to everyone IMO.
7. [Bughy kind of a weird way to start the set.
Beat mixing is way off (I think I misread my handwriting and gave you more pts than I should have), youve faded songs in while they werent matching, but at the end of the mix it is a bit better. You could have selected more songs with a similar theme as it seemed kind of confusing, even though I quite liked the diversity. I didnt however like many of the songs you chose, but to each his/her own. I suppose it would get some people dancing?
8. carlos montano I shouldnt bitch about peoples taste in music but the first song, by 2 of the biggest/best(?) trance producers in the world, made me want to vomit! Do people actually like this stuff? And as much as I love Sarahs voice, G&D should be slapped with a giant smelly trout for the second track.
With the vocal horror that just was, the set is mixed really well. If I could just magically erase all the vocals from this set, I would keep this mix. It really does get better for me after 30:00 when the vocals take a rest for a bit and only resurfacing occasionally.
Those who like vocals will probably love this set!
9. Chris Kim Track selection is good, mixing is pretty good, transitions are good.
Id definitely share this mix with my friends. This set has a nice pace and good energy. You missed a couple mixes slightly, but they werent too big or disruptive.
That Alphazone track would fit into any set, and belongs in almost any set, what a tune! Mixing needs a bit of touch-up work, but I have to say Good job Chris, I like this set.
10. DJ goonie pretty nice playlist. I got a pretty good vibe from this entire set. I think you could use a bit of polish on the mixes but it was still a great journey!

More to come when I find time.

your interpretation of hard trance is a bit dodgy.

congrats to all who got in their mixes, and thanks to the judges who did submit results, and an extra big thanks for sending/pming/posting feedback.

intoxicated? so what, you marked my set while tanked? haha you bugger.
if you liked the intro track, let me know, I've got a full version made now and I've sent it to a few peeps.
Probspot - Blueberry (DJ Commisad's Stormy Intro Mix)

Cheers

hehe, well considering the only difference between the sample I took from the mix and the old-school raves I was going to 10 years ago, is about 15-20 bpm. Same style, same sounds etc. I'd call that hard trance.

There's no doubt it's hard trance when you compare it to the rest of the sets I listened to. At any rate, I didn't have much of a point, just wanted to defend my um 'interpretation' .

edit: vrahnos.sample.mp3

and about Probspot - Blueberry (DJ Commisad's Stormy Intro Mix), yeah that's nice and chill, I like mellow openers.

Ahhh! 15th! The Shaft!

I understand why, though. I wish I could have had a chance to make a new mix for it...my latest mix is MUCH better.

i feel the same way

Posted by DjCommisad on May-29-2004 03:15:

if we're gonna have another one, lets do it over the summer while no one is fudged up with school =D

maybe a shorter time frame too, put a little pressure on djs, and give judges less time to get bored and wander off.

we just need ftp space, it doesn't take a whole lot to organize.
i'd like to organize, but i want to compete again, i know i can do way better, well maybe not against some of the talent here, but still. =)

Posted by tvmann on May-29-2004 03:50:

Judging could have been a lot of work - 25 entries, at least an hour long each. That's 3+ days of work for some people.

Maybe the next competition could have max 15 or 20 entries, and reduce the mix time to 35 minutes (half size). I probably won't be in this one though, got lots of new house & club music but not much new trance.

Posted by DjCommisad on May-29-2004 10:36:

true, very true, its tough on the judges.
but with 35 mins you can't get a lot going, its harder to build a journey in 35 mins. =)

but you're right, let's limit the competition to fewer competitors, or divide it. say 10 competitors or 15, and say 3 judges, and have two of them going (maybe not at the exact same time?)

Why did we take so much competitors this time? Because there was always about 50% of ppl who didn't send their mix. So with 20 competitors there was only 9 or 10 mixes submitted...

35 mins mixes isn't possible not enough time to prove your skills, some djs will only play 4 or 5 records...

For the ftp space, you don't need to provide it, t0ast! always did it, and I'm sure he will continue

Good luck for the next comp

New Competition ?

Well .. i`m really dissapointed of me .. but ... i hadn`t expected a great result .. because i broke my leg exactly when i had to send my mix .. and i was unable to do one specially for the competition .. a friend had send this one for me ... it was made last year .. i know it suck`d .. and i shouldn`t comment ... but ...

when is next .. i want to prove that i can do better

yeah i know.. i was in that one too.. bad timing too, exams and such and didn't get anything decent in.. then again i always use that excuse.

that's why i suggested two competitions at the same time (or if enough ppl say they will submit, have two at different overlapping times). if for some reason you have trouble filling either, stick everyone into one. if not, and u have enough, say 10-15 in each, its easier on the judges. i dunno, just trying to throw ideas out there and see if someone can come up with something better.. because either we have too many or too few, and then we always have problems with some of the judges (not all, the two who submitted this term and those that did the last few comps. have been extraordinary!)
