Actually, it's quite obvious in those pictures that Terry is grabbing Ricardo's arm, like Sand Leaper said

But oh well.. I give up. You stubborn Britons will never admit it was a foul anyway

do you not know the laws of gravity? Terry and Campbell were in the air BEFORE Ricardo...then Ricardo knew he was screwed and made a feeble jump at the ball, thus bumping into Terry, who, on his way down, had his arms outstretched. Even in your picture, it's obvious that Terry was in the air before Ricardo. Now tell me how it's a fould if the goalie jumps into two opposition players? That's the problem with Europeans...you have ruined this once great game with all the swan diving antics. The Dutch aren't that bad, but the Gerries, Italians, Portuguese, French...absolutely disgusting.

That was NOT a foul. Absolutely clean goal but it was called of b/c Portugal is host team.
That said, England should have played better !!!!!!!

Then why does he grab Ricardo's arm? Cause he does.

He is jumping at the moment and Ricardo jumped on him. It's a basic instinct to grab something when u're falling.
Btw when refery called it he said "push off", I did not see any pushing there.

Anyways it does not make any sense to discuss whether this was a goal or not. BUT Portugal was extremly lucky last night. First with the valid goal being called off, and then winning penalty shoot out. Their luck might run out soon...

Perhaps, but he did grab him. Which can be explained as assaulting the keeper in the goal area. Which is a foul.

Well I won't argue with that

Let's see how far they come. Their team is not finalworthy imo.

lol..and england was what? scoring on the first 3 mins with that screw up by costinha? equalising near the end when they were sufocated by portugal? that's not bad luck

No that's a part of the game. You can argue that Portugal was lucky to make the right substitutions and score that goal.

Or u can say that Portugal was lucky scoring a goal in the begining of the game with Russia and then when russian goalkeeper Ovchinikov was given red card for nothing! You could see that he did not touch the ball with his hand.
There are many things that can be called luck. But it's all part of the game.

Now, winning penalty kicks is luck. And the refery finding a "push off" in the situation when the goalie just jumps on the player is luck. Giving red card to Ovchinikov is also luck. Let's see how long they can last with it.

Even now people are discussing if it was a foul ot not. Then how could the referee decide this from afar in the heat of the moment? It was clearly not an obvious call and in these kind of situations the goalie is favored. Football is alot about luck and in this case England didn't have any. But I don't think it was there that England got kicked out. It was when Sven made some early defensive substitutions and I also think you didn't play very well against Portugal. Owens goal was amazing though.

Makes you wonder if cameras should be allowed to help the referee decide difficult situations though. I dont really like the idea, but there are so many referee mistakes in football that I feel something must be done.

Posted by malek on Jun-25-2004 22:37:

refs know about the trick that english player was trying to pull.

wasn't it weird to see Ricardo trying to jump but no able to as if some force held him on the ground??? The english player should've been carded at best... anyways, who cares now, the English are out for at least 2 years now.

carded? are you fucking kidding me? You obviously have no conception of the game you fucking stupid moron! Here we intelligent, knowledgeable football fans are debating whether it was a foul and you're suggesting it was a carded offense AT BEST? You have just proven your total lack of football sense. Get the hell off these boards you idiot. You don't even deserve to be watching this game, let alone blathering on about it.

Posted by TranceGiant on Jun-25-2004 22:41:

I think there have always been man ref. mistakes, it just seems much more nowadays cause 1, with dozens of cameras and slow-mo's every milisecond from any possible angle can be observed and analysed 2, the game has become gradually faster and harder to follow.
Still, humans make mistakes, players as much as refs. Part of the game, part of life.

werd.

But IMO, i thought it was the correct decision by the ref. There was a clear obstrucion from Ricardo getting to the ball by terry. Also in saying that i seen keepers given free kicks for a lot less, but being the time of the incident it will be highlighted obviously. This time Sol shouldnt feel unlucky. Unlike in 98 when it was a clear goal against the argentinians

Unhappy

few things,

we need to start using Bridge, Dyer, Robinson. Simple as that!

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jun-25-2004 23:06:

one definite change....Goodbye Mr. James in goal. Awful, awful performance. It was like he just threw in the towel when it went to penalties. I could have stopped Ronaldo's PK!

actually...looks to me that you're just covering up for making a really stupid comment. But whatever...I'll get over it soon enough. England always blow it, so I'm used to it. But they're my team and country and I'll always support them no matter what.

portugal wasn't lucky, they just played well. england just played very bad after the opening goal. and penalty shootouts are not a lottery, the best win and face it england just took poor penalties so they lost.they're not good at it. I know what that feels like, I'm Dutch.
