I don't listen to so-styled "McProg", because I don't like it. However, you are an elitist, and suck.

Guys. It's cool to discuss your opinions and shit but tell eachother to "fuck off" etc etc. has to stop.

So what do you listen to?

BTW, you still suck for telling me I suck.

How can you classify him as an elitist when it's evident that his taste in music spans several genres?

The fact that we are turned off by this music doesn't make us elitists, it just means that we aren't bandwagon jumping 'progressive' lovers who, ironically enough, criticize 'boring progressive' to an even greater extent with a generally more limited knowledge of what they are criticizing.

Anything that I find to be good. Overplayed is not a factor. For instance, I'm currently listening to an album that has sold over 14 million copies.

Do you even know what an elitist is? I labelled him one because he said "anything that isn't overplayed."

Fair enough. But if all you listen to is stuff that's shoved in your face by popular radio stations, semi-underground or not, then... I suggest you look into stuff not many have heard. Look through Discogs at random and try to find samples, I bet you'll find some really good stuff.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to quote. Directed at System-J.

I've listened to formulaic stuff in the past, of course, but there's a time when you have to get over it and let your tastes progress.

Yes, yes I do.

Then what the hell does being elitist have to do with listening to a wide variety of music?

Posted by Ory on Dec-21-2004 17:04:

lol, ok, I'm an elitist. But not the kind of elitist that sticks to one genre and defends it no matter what. I just don't respect music that is poorly produced, uninspired, unoriginal and unimaginative (wow, those words are so over-used in this thread).

Posted by UWM on Dec-21-2004 17:08:

Perhaps our opinions of elitism slightly differ. I'll offer my take.

Elitists believe they have an inherent intellectual superiority over a particular subject, in this case music. They refuse to associate with or cater to said particular subject because they feel they are 'better' than it.

Ory has mentioned that he listens to a wide variety of genres, not discriminating against a particular style because he feels that he is above it or shouldn't lower himself to associate with it.

He simply chooses not to listen to radio play or 'McProg' because, in his opinion, most of it is formulaic shit music that is packaged and released for the masses with a certain extent of disregard to the quality of the 'package.' In many cases, I would have to agree.

We are entited to our own opinions, are we not?

An elitist is someone who is biased against a certain thing because of image rather than actual content. Listening to several genres of music doesn't exempt someone from this.

Posted by UWM on Dec-21-2004 17:13:

You're either missing my point on purpose and just trying to aggravate me, or you're missing it on accident.

Either way, I'm done.

McProg lovers listen to crap productions that only have an "image" because Markus/Armin promoted the track.

And UWM, I do think my taste in music is better than your average McProg listener's. Why? I've told y'all why so many times in this thread already.

That is just on persons opinion. I find the music very well produced. When I listen to ASOT/GDJB with my headphones on, I love hearing the delays twinkling around, also the melodies to me are very nice. Not in your face super saw. Subtle and deep. When I hear the breakdowns, most of the tracks have great ambience. You can really hear alot of different colors. To me this music is like abstract art. If you have a good ear, you are able to hear melodies and sounds in this music that isnt really there. That is why I love this style. It isnt in your face like other genres, and their are lots of hidden melodies that most people dont hear. I am only sorry that not everyone is able to hear the beauty.

So many wrong definitions of elitist, only one correct:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=elitist
elitism or litism Audio pronunciation of "elitist" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-ltzm, -l-)
n.

1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

elitist

n : someone who believes in rule by an elite group [ant: egalitarian]

By definition most tranceaddicts are elitists, most techno heads are elitists, most house heads are elitists, and so on.

My point. The percieved superiority in this case being that underground music is percieved as being better because it is not mainstream.
