Whilst i really want trance to get big again, or at the very least just keep going, it's not exactly high on my list of priorities of things to do.
"Lets do something about it" is a nice idea, I appreciate the sentiment but its unrealistic

Wow, you have a fairly disappointing pessimistic outlook of things. Just because you personally don't have the time, determination, confidence, or care and choose to think of yourself as insignificant for being able to make any difference.. does NOT equate to something being unrealistic. The biggest mistake a person can make is thinking they can't make much of a difference.. because that is the point where you won't. If you don't care, that's one thing.. but if you do, you don't just lay down passively and take it in the ass! As for "what are we supposed to do" well there are a lot of things that could be done to make a positive difference to the trance scene. It starts with actually trying to think of things that could be improved.. it's not going to be any one thing. Anything that you can think of to improve things helps and has a ripple effect.

There are problems within the music side of thing, and there are problems within the event goer/fan side of things. Any positive things that can be done to improve either of these makes a difference. Whether it's finding ways to better support the good music/artists/djs (this doesn't simply end at buying their stuff or going to their shows) or finding ways to strengthen trance's fan base and draw more people into the scene. There are a lot of different ways to go about this and it's a lot more useful to try thinking of ways than to just ask someone else what to do.

Anyway, I think you know what the difference is between a sample and a melody, not?

So please try again, it's about the small sample he used. I cannot hear any common sounds with For An Angel. Armin also played this track at episode 257, I hope you listened to the same version.

ANYONE ELSE OF YOU TRANCEADDICTS WANNA GIVE IT A SHOT??

Okay, looks like you appreciate other things then I.

The sample, 303 sound, (which is not in the melody)which I mean is from:

EMMANUEL TOP - ACID PHASE

Can be found at TRANCE NATION 95 CD1 Track 2.

Since many complain about Trance nowadays, I can appreciate this classic sound.

By the way, Racoon is a Dutch band. Armin made a Remix of there hit "Love you more".
http://www.racoon.nl

Tiesto did the same great thing with Rain Down On Me from KANE. Live version at the first Tiesto in Concert was fantastic.

for the first time, sensation white 2006 had more house than trance. im hearing reports that electro is more popular in netherlands than trance. what the hell is this world coming to.

nemesis, what the hell are we supposed to do about it? the only thing I can think of is make anti electro t shirts, like a red circle with a line through it, because i truly believe electro is what's killing trance.

what I've done to help trance is what I've been doing all along: i send my friends good trance live sets. I just mailed 3 dvd's of videos and stuff to my friend in cali. they almost always say the stuff rocks and want more of it, but they also say they still like ELECTRO.

haha.. electro isn't what's killing trance.. I'm a firm believer that the damage is coming from the trance scene internally as it's clearly been thrown off balance and not taking to the changes very well or sustaining itself well enough. I love great electro personally, the electro I play has so many progressive elements to me that it just feels like another form of energetic progressive house. Some fresh sounds which I am finding tracks with elements of progressive, techno, and disco rolled into one. There's crap, but same as any genre the good and the bad.

There's a fair amount of excitement in the scene towards electro.. and that excitement spreads. That's why hype is so important, cause it's excitement, it spreads and draws more people to it. The trance scene needs things to get a bit more interesting and exciting to those within it as well as to outsiders. I have one key idea to make things a bit more interesting/positive around here which I'm going to bring up soon. But really, there are a lot of different angles and things to try and when enough people get on board and motivated and taking some ownership in the state of things and wanting to help, then we will most certainly start to see some differences. I don't need to tell any of you how many countless times in history a whole bunch of people getting on the same page with something and getting motivated were able to make big influential things happen.

Are we supposed to keep offering trance, when it's really mostly foreigners expecting us to do so?

I've heard almost no one complain about the line-up here in Holland, all the whining about "Sensation white should have more trance" comes from foreigners, who clearly don't even know what Sensation is all about.

Sorry to burst your bubble, we've moved on.

Good riddance to trance in Holland, I say. It can only do good for the vitality of the genre.

There's nothing realistic about thinking you can't make a difference or building up a mental wall about what you can and can't do. I've spent a good portion of my life outside the box walking through those invisible walls people build up about different things. There are much greater challenges in the world than helping to repair the trance scene.

i looked back at this thread:

and you're right the lineup complaints came from every country except holland.

so trance is not the most popular form of dance music currently in holland? but it was just mentioned earlier in the thread by a few people that trance is strong as ever in europe. NL is like the last fort stronghold of trance. if we lose NL, trance is surely doomed. shit.

maybe this new trance track is the direction trance needs to go to stay alive?

Not really. It may be a part of a new fad of electro-trance, thanks to Ferry Corsten, but for the trance a lot of us got into, the more melodic variety, probably not. That is what really needs saving right now, not a new sub-genre that has started to emerge, even though it's nothing official yet. It will probably just be a fad. It's melodic trance that needs to change, and there has been some attempts to do that.

I can see Kalafut & Fygle's sound as being a slightly new direction for melodic trance, but they haven't released or promoted themselves enough to really make a huge impact. But I think they had some cool sounds with their tracks, like "Lullaby", "Astra", "3579 KM" and "Novocaine". I can just see potentional in their tracks, that can further progress the sound. Sort of a fusion of epic and progressive. Just like any artist(s) they have some time to mature... But I can see "electro-trance" becoming a new sub-genre of trance. There could also be a new sub-genre for stuff that Kalafut & Fygle and Ljungqvist and a few others make.

See what I mean, there's no more room for sitting back and watching the show. If the ship sinks to the bottom of the ocean you'll just be a castaway like Tom Hanks enjoying your music with your friend Wilson who you made out of a volleyball!

There is no ONE thing that will save trance, it's a lot of things that need improving. Caning one sound won't do it. The bottom line is it just needs to be interesting, exciting, danceable, and also danceable by people who aren't just high and wanting it fast and hard and in your face! People that normally prefer house will be able to also enjoy the uplifting melodies of trance if it's fed to them in terms that are danceable without needing to be on drugs ie: not 140bpm.

These forums see some aimless threads but this is up there. Great stuff.

It has nothing to do with the music or the producers or the record labels. Trance culture is dead. It has been for years, its just becoming more apparent now.

In the early 90's Trance represented a desire for mind expansion and self expression through electronic/rhythmic music and drugs. It managed to maintain 'some' of this philosophy through the huge rise of club culture in the late 90's but it really lost its way not too long ago.

On one side of the fence, its far too commercial for real freaks to consider even remotely appealing and on the other side, for those who want a nice safe clubbing experience, theres plenty of other original and new music to choose over the same old tired anthem structure of trance.

Why does any of this matter? Because its the fans that shape the music. When those fans are only supporting a small slice of the same copycat artists and only attending events to see massive ego fuelled DJ stars, decay starts to set in and the vicious cycle of commercial dominance continues.

Somehow the movement forgot what sacred intentions it originally had. And lets face it, how could it really maintain those principles when to a lot of people, trance represents huge superstar DJ's playing in massive amphitheatres.

Trance strayed far too close to the boundaries of commercial exploitation and now... well.. now its fucked. The best thing that can happen is that it shrinks to nothing, all the money grabbers and superstars fuck off to electro/house/whatever and then it arises from a new generation with a new set of ideals.

But hey, thats just my skewed perspective, a lot of people really like this new easy listening trance. I just wonder for how long though.

Very well said.

The entire ethos of trance has been dead for many years, and that was what drove the sound.

The reason I posted what I said is because you repeatedly criticise people on here for moaning/complaining/worrying about the trance scene but not doing anything about it.

So in regards to this subject alone, I don't see what we are REALISTICALLY meant to do about it. We like the music we like. We will attend the club nights that appeal to us. If we want to do other things other than clubbing then we will. I can't in anyway affect the quality of productions coming out other than not to buy them and I don't buy them. Doesnt make a difference because there are plenty of people out there who do buy them and therefore obviously like them.

You talk about finding ways to support local scene, to change things, to make a difference, but you don't come up with any examples of how we could do this. So like Paul Andrews said, you are an idealist, but in practical terms you are being unrealistic.

Think I should add, I'm not criticising you nemesis, like i've mentioned, i appreciate the sentiment and its a positive attitude but I don't really see what you expect to achieve

You have to admit that it's really dropped in popularity over six or seven years.

Posted by carl@NI on Jul-20-2006 13:15:

Trance is far from dead, its just took a new path thats all.Djs are just fusing elements of many different genres into Trance to make it sound different as tunes as of late were getting too repetitive.

man you know thats not true at all. I'm tired of him constantly bashing people on here because of their tastes. I bash no one on here and respect everyones opinions. I agree more BS doesn't belong here, but for him theres always the exception and hes the target, not the music.

I think in general the Dutch are more open minded. Although I like Trance most, I also liked Happy Hardcore, Eurodance, some Hardcore, Rave, German Techno, Club House and all Belgium style stuff (Bonzai, Cherrymoon).

Years ago I predicted that Trance could grow huge, but maybe it shouldn't have got that popular. So some can call it dead, but maybe it is going towards the size were only the real addicts remain.

Last weekend was Love Parade 2006 in Berlin, 1,200,000 visitors. A 6 hours drive form Holland.
But in the same weekend also was Dance Valley, 12,000 visitors at friday and 42,000 at Saterday.
Same weekend also Extrema Outdoor with 25,000 visitors was sold out.
And last 5 Days Off had 12,000 visitors.

There are only about 16 million Dutch.

So like a cola commercial says: Strong taste for such a small country (100 km width, 300 km long)
