current speculation for the 1D MKIV:

* 16mp FF
* Dual DIGIC IV
10fps
* 61AF Points (Somewhere around 20 selectable)
* 100% ViewFinder
* 3" VGA LCD (OLED is a possibility, it exists in test cameras)
* SD/CF Slot
* 1080p Movie (24p, 25p, 30p)
* New Lighter Battery
* Ergonomic Changes (2nd Joy Stick Type Controller)

kinda doubt itll have all those video FPS modes tho.

Shit, that's pretty nice. I'd love to know what they'll be doing with the 1Ds then.

Not that I'll be able to afford one

so announcement around the corner may not be the 1D MKIV, it may be a 7D.

well it's rumor. I think they talked about it like a year ago right. Well they are talking again and one of the sources *seems* believable.

Yeah that is why I am so surprised. It was expected that they were going to launch the 7D along with the 5D MKII, but that never materialized.

Any idea of what the specs might be for it? Full frame, or crop?

Crop for sure. It appears they are trying to slot something between the 60d and the 5d. Dunno why though.

Probably to compete with Nikon. I think there are a couple of Nikons with a 1.3x crop?

I've seen both possibilities - I think it's hard to say.

I think the bottom line is, if you are considering buying a DSLR right now, hold off just a bit longer to see Canon's next camera(s), announcing in the next few months.

My gf is looking to potentially switch from Canon to Sony, so it definitely interests me.

I've also heard rumours of Canon re-doing some of their L telephoto lenses, and I'm fucking HOPING one of those will the the 100-400mm L.

Why? It will be 89348290572930bagillion AUD anyways.

Lol. It's around $1900 to $2200 AUD new, for the current version.

It's a shit design though. The 'push-pull' zoom sucks way too much dust into the insides of the lens (it has to be professionaly taken apart/cleaned/recalibrated every 3 years or so, depending on use).

Also, the consistency of their calibration is POOR, even new. This means that there are sharp copies of the lens, average coppies of the lens, and soft copies of the lens. Until you test it out, you have no idea what you'll get. Sharp copies are very hard to come by, and I've seen them sell for $2500 AUD second hand. And it's not often that people sell them. I know I wouldn't.

All of that adds up to "it needs to be re-done".

I kinda can't understand why people are attracted to Sony DSLR's.

Built in image stabilisation is pretty cool, though from what I've been reading, it's not anywhere near the 4 stops that Sony are touting. More like 1 to 1.5 stops.

The new G-series lenses are pretty ninja though. The new 70-400mm for example. The reviews and statistics on PhotoZone are very impressive.

I'm not convinced though I love my Canon gear.

oh really. I don't know anything about the lenses. good to know. its a proprietary mount right. is it compatible with Minolta or something?

The stabilisation is built into the camera, rather than having it in the lens, so EVERY lens you use has it, instead of paying mega-$$$ for an IS version lens.

It's a Minolta mount, so all of their old lenses work on the Sony bodies (Sony bought them a few years ago - It was Konica-Minolta that pioneered the in-camera stabilisation technique, around 2005/2006 I think). Minolta had some NICE lenses too, and they're so cheap now.

It opens up a lot of possibilities, as far as building up a nice kit goes, anyway.
