No kids for us. Both have too much of our own shit to work through and don't want to pass any of it onto offspring. Plus, I really don't think I'd want to bring kids into the world as I see it these days - part of me hopes I'm wrong, but I wouldn't say the future bodes well for upcoming generations.

Wow, a whole hundred years out of how many of human existence? You mean with the advent of the industrial era, when the human population started to explode, when waging wars and razing other countries' natural stores suddenly became really easy, when quantity went way up and quality went way down?

The world we currently reside in is not a particularly rational place, in case you hadn't noticed.

Irrational is spitting out a half-dozen children without the means to support or educate them, not deciding to not have any.

The point I was making is that the excuse that the world today is shittier than when you grew up, and so therefore is no place to raise a child is the biggest bullshit excuse ever. You aren't even for a second considering that the world in which you raise your child has no bearing on how you raise them. The values and ethics you instill in them. No, that isn't the responsibility of the parent, nor is it how a child learns these things.

I'm sorry Ben, but that's bullshit, for the most part

Children, after a certain age (I would say teenage-hood), are more often than not 'raised' by their peers. Parents certainly still provide shelter, clothing, money, etc. in the raising of them, but kids look to others in their social groups to find out what is 'normal' and what they should be doing.

As a teenager, parents are lame, and out of touch. It doesn't matter if they're right, all that matters is that kids want to do their own thing, within their chosen social area.

I don't know much about your past, but I know enough that it seems you have broken away from a lot of what you were taught, growing up? I know that I did.

What you instil in your kids at an early age in terms of values often determines the kind of people they will ultimately choose to hang around with and hence be influenced by Stu.

You're right, but only up until a point in their lives.

It isn't always the case though. I've seen heaps of really, really good kids just go completely off the rails. And I think that the state of society, or what ever you want to call it, seriously contributes to that.

Sure there are outliers but look at the general population. How many times have you and your friends wanted to do something but the values your parents and family instilled in you in the past prevented you from doing it? I was hazard to say many if you think about it carefully.
Sure, we've all done stupid things but that's part of growing up and it's radically different to let's say doing heroin with someone behind a dumpster while you have no job and no place to stay.

Some personality traits are genetic, others are learned from family and society. Basically everything influences the way a child turns out.

I most likely won't have children because I don't want to pass along all the various illnesses that were passed down to me. Also, because of the chronic pain and autoimmune issues, I don't know if I could be consistently counted on to parent which isn't fair to a child.

You ever stop to think that "parents" today, aren't really parenting their children? There are a ton of factors that are causing this, and most of it has to do with the fact that parents just sit their children in front of a tv/video games/computer/etc and expect them to learn the values and shit from that. A 8yr old child with a cell phone?

As Fledz said, it is all about shit from a very young age that shapes how a kid will be as they grow up. This HEAVILY influences things as they get older.

I half regret saying that each time I see it. I'm not sure if I believe it anymore after reading it so many times. It's kind of a paradox in the first place - perhaps the world really is getting worse because it's becoming more televised.

Though I suppose if we're talking adages, I like the more things change, the more they stay the same. That doesn't ever seem to change. $.
